In the event of an accident I would want my car repaired by the main dealer and not one of those 'approved repairers' and accept I would need to pay an additional excess for this.

My local main dealer offers a service in the event of an accident where you phone them and they will take care of everything and put you in one of their cars for the duration of the repair but they say you must call them first.... Read more

If you don't report it to the insurance company and then someone refuses to pay your local garage where do you go. Not having reported it may leave you with a big argument or even a refusal if that is in the T & C's.

We are insured with Aviva. Clearly states in the documentation that you can have the car repaired wherever you want but there is an additional £200 excess if they are not an approved repairer. It also clearly states that you will not get a loan car if you do not use an approved repairer....

Which company?

there's No need to 'get off' anything. Its a speculative invoice, just ignore the paperwork.

We are currently at letter two from a bunch of scammers trying it on with us.

Good evening everyone. I have a 54 plated Jag x-type estate, (picked up at auction on an idiotic whim and regretted ever since) It has 70k on the clock ad has not been used for a year.

However, now it is needed due to the demise of another car. I am toying with the idea of coverting it to LPG. I am trawling through a few websites which are contradictory regarding valve seat recession on the jag engines and the damage the conversion will do. Some suggest not to do it while others say the engine has hard enough valve seats which will not be damaged by a coversion. Has anyone experienced an x type LPG conersion or heard of any problems converting one.... Read more

I have recently bought an S reg mitsubishi shogun. When we went to put our child seat in we came across an issue with the rear seat belts. When they are fully extended, as you need to to put the child seat in, they have a type of friction on them when they recoil, to prevent snap-back. A great safety feature but a nightmare for securely fitting a child seat. I have googled and googled to try and find an answer on how disable this feature but cannot find anything. All I know is that it is called 'belt force limiter'. There is also nothing in the Haynes manual about it.

Is anyone out there able to help me with this please?

Thank you Read more

Is this a seat that's retained by the car belt while the child is held by a 4 or 5 point belt integrated into the seat?

Technique with ours was to pull the car belt through the fixings on the seat with one hand while using the other to cope with slack still being taken up by the inertia reel. Eventually got to point where belt was locked.

Out of all the components listed, only the crank sensor is a possible problem for cutting out.Have you thought about a diagnostic check?May make more sense than a "poke and hope"approach.hth

Hi,
Just reading a feature on a company called whipcar .

They offer an unusual service ,offering a facility for private owners to rent out thier own car .

They offer a booking and driver checking facility ,take payment for the car and provide insurance .Presumably they will take a commission before forwarding the payment to the car owner .

Have any forum members come across the company or used it to rent a car ,alternatively what would could the potential problems be www.WhipCar.co Read more

I don't think it's a secret that companies like hertz etc buy cars very cheaply ,perhaps 25 or 30 % off list ,perhaps leaseman would know what kind of discount large companies receive .

I don't know about these days but prices could be as low as 50% of list price a decade or so ago.

Noting that my legal services with www.24cover.co.uk is approaching 12 months, I attempted to reach their website, to investigate possible renewal.

A web page appears that shows that the web address is “owned” by a company, but other than this there are no details of 24cover at all.... Read more

2004 Mondeo Diesel TDci (93000 miles)not starting.
First noticed recently on cold morning. AA diagnosed glow plug problem. Had glow plugs replaced: two were open circuit, one degraded. Low fuel pressure diagnosed.
However, still poor starter from cold, but better when run warm. Running apparently fine.
During recent run on motorway, glow plug light flashing. However, running well. On stopping and restart glow plug light goes out, & stays out.
Now, won't start.
Have been told it could be several things, but is there a concensus on most likely?
Am not inclined to spend a great deal of money. What is best value of the car in this (non-working) condition? Scrap or repair?

Regards,

These engines don't need the glow plugs to start unless the temp is freezing or below.

The diag showed low fuel rail pressure....

In the 70's I needed a second car to get to work and paid £300 cash for a Simca 1100. It gave good service and was quite reliable and comfortable although a few of my Army mates had a good mickey take. kept it for a couple of years and got my money back in px. Read more

I vaguely remember a friend having a Simca not long after I passed my test so circa 1990/1/2. I also remember the noise, so that must have been the tappets....

And I also remember seeing it in the scrapyard a bit later on as looked for bits for my Austin Allegro....
