Can anyone help? Mechanics are mystified even after road tests and pit inspection. The car runs really sweetly except between 1200-1900 RPM when we get an irritating noise caused by a metallic vibration somewhere in back left side of engine bay. There is nothing loose or missing under the car or in the engine bay that they can see and they have ruled out exhaust shield problems and gear box whine. Car has done 55,000 miles and is garaged and otherwise a joy to drive and own but the noise appears in the most used rev range and is driving us nuts. Any suggestions to look into welcome. Read more

If it isn´t anything outside the engine then it has to be something inside it pehaps a bearing failing on the crankshaft.

I bought 4 Premium Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres from BLACKCIRCLES.com at total price of over £700.00. After less than 6,000 miles, the rear tyres (which were from a different manufacture batch number) were totally smooth - completely illegal to drive on. (so 5,000 would be a better estimate of legal driving mileage!). The front tyres were only worn by 1mm over the same period. I sent the tyres back asking for an explanation. The Manufacturer (Bridgestone) said that "HIGH MILAGE is not recognised as being the main criteria of this tyre". BlackCircles replied that "the total mileage does appear to be less than I would expect, however it is the case that no tyres will last as long as the first set due to a number of reasons including the vehicle’s parts becoming worn and looser over time." They then stated that there was nothing else they were prepared to do and were not going to provide an independent exam. I have spoken to local tyre suppliers that state the rear tyres should wear at approximately twice as fast as the front tyres. Is this correct? If that was the case I would expect the front tyres to be worn by 4mm and not 1mm!!! Very Dissatisfied Customer. If it was a local company, I would demand a refund for the Poor Quality Rear Tyres. Unfortunately as this is an internet company from Scotland, I am unable to do this. I do not recommend buying from this company. In future, I guess i will use local tyre suppliers than will stand by their products. Any recommendations? Thanks. Read more

My 320i E92 manual gets through a rear set of run flats in c.16k and front set in 35k. That's mixed motorway and country roads generally putting my foot down.

The car came with Pirelli's on the rear when I bought it which tended to wear pretty heavily in the centres. I switched to Continental's which were original fitment when new and they have worn much more evenly....

During my time as an instructor presenting hundreds of pupils pupils for practical driving tests I have only ever seen one test candidate fail the eyesight test, not one of mine, I hasten to add.

If the candidiate fails to correctly read a car number plate made after 1st September 2001 from 20 metres in good daylight the examiner will usually enquire if the candidate could write down the number even if they can't say it, (dyslexia) If they can't do that the examiner will call out the chief examiner or test centre manager with a tape measure, set out the accurate correct distance and ask the candidate to repeat the test. If they still can't read it the test will not go ahead and the fee will be forfeit. Driving examiners in my experience are usually very fair about the eyesight test....

Hi, I need to remove my heater control panel. I have removed the radio, and can now see the connections on the back of the panel. There is a cable connected to the back of the air direction control dial that I cannot remove. the cable has a large green collar that you can pull back away from the panel, but it will only come so far, as there appears to be some kind of hidden spring holding it on. I have tried twisting the green collar, and also squeezing and pulling, but all i have done so far is put a crack in the green collar that I am worried will break completely, leaving me with a bigger problem. Any help with removing this cable with green collar without causing further damage would be greatly appreciated. The Haynes manual is no help at all!

My 1998 audi a3 1.8t is off the road due to a missfire and violent shaking it sounds like a subaru and performs poorly,it has a str8 thru custom exhaust,i dnt know if this plays any part in the cause of the fault, basicly i noticed for a while the car felt like it was pullin bk for a slight second every now n then, then i was driving up a steep hill and all of a sudden it started to missfire so i headed home,i hav had a mAte briefly look at it and plug it in it came up with no fault codes, he switched all plugs over and came to the conclusion 1 isnt working he said he needs to do further tests on it as he suspects possibly a valve blown? Is this expensive Nd does it sound likely to be the problem? I saw posts from screwloose n cach on here please get in touch i need help as its been off road 6 months now as i was made redundant and couldnt afford to risk a repair that wouldnt fix it im also based in berks, maidenhead, please somebody help me if u can cure or help me fix it i will giv u a drink,my mAte wants to compression test it? Does this sound correct process ? Read more

Roly93

A compression test would be the correct course of action for this. It would cost very little or nothing and if 1 is low it would mean definate surgery is required on the cyl head valves etc.

I want a gadget that will do at least the first two of the above tasks, preferably all 3. I know that there are cheap head units available that will do this, but I can't lose my OE one as it also the heating controls!

My Focus has the 17in wheels, I bumped into a kerb in a car park early this week now I get vibration from steering wheel when at high speeds (darent say exactly what speed) on motorway- what is most likely reason

I wondered if a frt wheel has lost a balance weight . Read more

TeeCee

Could be a variety of things, including the balance weight you suggest.

Another likely culprit would be damage to the tyre itself. You really ought to get this looked at as, if it is the tyre, it could blow. That could be very nasty at you-daren't-say-exactly mph!...
