Folks,

Any opinions on the titled car as a family car? I'm confused to the models, add there seems to be a tourer version which is from mid 2012. The tourer comes in different specs - classic, style, active etc.

What about the comfort estate, how does it compare in terms of spec? I assume it's a previous model to the tourer?

Any issues I should know about? The one I am looking at has 4 years warranty left, and 8k miles on the clock.

Thanks

Comfort is the mid range spec, equivalent to what is now the Style and it will have a very good specification, but probably not the more expensive tyre and harsher ride 17 inch wheels which are fitted to the top spec model.

You dont say what year this car is - that might make a big difference to what we think of the car.

I have an i30 hatch 1.6 CRDi auto, Czech built in 2010 so its the facelift model. My experience is that it does the job, but reliability is very very disappointing so thank goodness for the 5 yr warranty. It is also in my opinion noisier (and rather flimsier with creaks and rattles) than an equivalent Focus or Astra etc. On the other hand it goes quite well, handles quite well (almost as agile as a Focus), accomodates 5 adults remarkably, and passengers remark on how decent it is. My initial impression was that the front seats were very hard and the head restraints would not go back enough - but we can travel for long jouurneys (several hundred miles) withought drama or discomfort, albeit not in silence.....

If buying 2ndhand a bonus is that I think Hyundai held back from fitting DPF's until 2010.

Any comments about this being a good family car?

Would I be better off with an Hyundai Active i40 or an Toyota TR D4D Avensis for a couple more grand (same age and mileage).

Anyone any comments on the i30 comfort 115hps engine? I know someone who has driven both the 115hps and 136hps in the i40 and he said the 115hps was a bit gutless compared to the 136.

Thanks

If you can stretch to the i40 or the Avensis, either of those will provide better comfort and refinement than the i30 Estate.

The i30 Tourer, however, which is the new model is a different matter and by all accounts is a very good car in its own right along with the new Kia Cee'd. (Both mid 2012 on)

The i40 is a large car to be dragged around by 115 BHP, so I would opt for the 136.

We have the 115 ps engine in the Ceed SW which is essential identical but slightly bigger. Performance is fine, never felt it lacking. Economy is excellent, 51.5 mpg over 25,000 miles, Mondeo TDCI that had similar space averged under 40 mpg.

Try the i40 and Avensis and make you own mind up, its you that has got to drive it and live with it.

Before we bought the Ceed we tried many cars. Did not drive the i30 Tourer, too small, drove the Avensis Tourer, nice car but we could not find a diesel demonstrator and the 1.8 petrol was carp in a car that size, gutless as it gets. Tried the diesel used in the Avensis in a Verso and was not particularly impressed, noisy and turbo came in with a bang.

When we bought we did not ask on any forum, we did what we have always done and drove the cars, considered their good and bad points and decided which was best for us. The Ceed won hands down and was one the the cheapest we tried.

A good mid size estate is the hyundai i30, although the diesel engine is not trouble free and the usual diesel problems will eventually catch you up.

The 1.6 petrol auto estates are rare and seem to hold their value, its one of the last of the traditonal auto boxes and it pulls along nicely in this car.
