With tighter budgets being forced upon us I suspect this is one topic that will come up time and time again for discussion.

I have just spent £20 on two nearly new tyres for the Almera. I paid another £5 to have both tyres fitted to my wheels.. Local to us we have a scrap yard. They are not a breakers yard as such but they are an approved ELV depot. Most vehicles are processed and then crushed - the processing involves removing the wheels and separating the wheels fromt the tyres. A few, including a handful of Land Rover Discovery 1s and some commercial vehicles are kept and broken in the way a car breaker would.... Read more

I stopped in a restricted bus stop bay for no more than a minute in order to check my road atlas. I received a PCN from Brent Council dated seven days later with a photograph of my car (presumably from one of those mobile cameras) and a demand for £130 (£65 if paid within 21 days). This was on a busy road with nowhere to stop. Is it worth pursuing this fine or should I "pay up and look happy"? Read more

Ithought it was now illegal to clamp a car

It is on private land but local authorities are still allowed to provided they sought the power when transferring parking enfordement from the police....

I like the idea of repairing damaged cars and selling them on. Would like to start of with some basic repairs and maybe move up to something a bit more complicated.

Have spent the last few years repairing our own cars, but looking for a challenge that doesn't require the car to be ready to a time scale. Happy to turn my hand to anything!... Read more

I was in a fatal 2 vehicle collision in early September. The other motorist lost control on a bend and crashed into the side of my car; she died a little while later, at the scene.

My car was impounded by the police. On enquiry I was told that their enquiries should take no more than a couple of weeks. After 4 weeks and no news, I called the police, and was told the case had been passed to the Procurator Fiscal (I'm in Scotland). I called the PF a few times over the next few weeks only to be told that their investigation is to decide if there is to be a prosecution and will take as long as it takes. After 13 weeks I wrote to them to complain that they had made no attempt to keep me informed, and had not given me any information except when I phoned them - by coincidence (obviously) my car was released from their custody the day they received my letter; I also got a response to my complaint reiterating the purpose of their investigation, pointing out that they had answered questions as I asked them and saying they were not yet finished, although finished with my car (which then went for major repairs).

This week, I finally got my car back from the repairer. I then called the PF to get a update, because the 3rd party insurer said they would not decide liability without the PF report. The PF told me that the case is closed; I asked when that happened and was told 10 days earlier; I asked why I hadn't been told and she said because they don't. Words failed me - they had previously told me that they were deciding if there is to be a prosecution and, as the only survivor of the accident I am the only person who could be prosecuted, but they didn't think it necessary to tell me that nearly 5 months of suspense is finally over.

Write to PF HQ in Edinburgh, google and you will get all you need to complain.

If matters do not progress take it up with Kenny McCaskill via your MSP - MSPs get paid well enough, a bit of work rather than an expenses paid outing somewhere is what they need!

Is this a twin spark engine.

The instuctions for all compression testers I have used say to remove all spark plugs before commencing (to allow engine to turn over quick enough)....

I bought a two year old Citroen C1 VTR+ (13k miles at the time) in September last year from a main dealer. I was told it had a full service history. When I picked it up there was no service book. I queried this at the time and was told they would get it. They did not find it in their office and have been unable to provide the original service book. I have been provided with a replacement but it has the first service missing. I am now in discussion with a garage about this.

I paid what I consider the full price (£5.5k) for the car based in part on it having a full service history. I would appreciate any thoughts about what the difference in price would be for this car with and without a service history? I would like to hear any advice on how to deal with this.

Any answers much appreciated and thanks in advance. Read more

I treat all promises by car dealers before they sell the car as potential lies and demand they deliver on them before I pay my money.

Promising to do summat to close a sale and then not delivering are endemic in car sales.. ...

This is an interesting read, with worrying implications for the future of classic car race events: in essence, the journalist and experienced racer, Mark Hales, was doing some track laps in a Porsche 917 replica for a magazine article, missed a gear and momentarily over-revved the engine. Bang, £40,000+ repair bill at a specialists.

The case went to court, Hales lost and has to pay for the repair, plus costs, plus legal fees. Ouch. Although the session was insured against a crash, like a conventional motor policy the cover doesn't extend to mechanical damage.... Read more

I agree, it needed a watertight agreement in terms of liability set out, before the starter was pressed.

4 years ago I bought a 2001 Polo 1.4v 5 door, my daughter learned to drive in it, and has driven it "as hers" since she passed her test about 2 years ago, Her studies and her work take her all over South East of England, sometimes she drives, sometimes she uses the train, the trains where she is based are terrible, it took her 6 hours to get from Brighton to Canterbury, which had nothig to do with snow just a while ago,

The Polo is now needing new gearbox and clutch the cost of which is much higher then the value of the car.

thinking of replacing it, but at this price level there is so much luck involved determining if you get a lemon or something half decent.

Suggestions?

Stick the Old Polo on EBAY, even with the faults you have stated mentioned, somebody will buy it and maybe fix it.

It is amazing what people will buy on Ebay....
