Just went to change the serpentine belt on my Jeep that had snapped. My Jeep has separate pulleys for the water pump and fan. I can't find any reference on the net to a Jeep engine that has the pulley configuration that I have.
My alternator is on the top left of the engine (including belt adjust) my power steering pump is on the top right. The AC is on the bottom right (level with the crank) and then sat in the middle of the block are 2 No pulleys for the water pump and the fan. There are also to guiders near the alternator. ... Has anybody got any tips on how to get the best price on a car from a dealer? I will be a cash buyer with no part exchange and my budget is 7k. How can I maximise the amount of discount I can leverage? Read more

Some say dealers will be more willing to negotiate towards the month-end. Salesmen chasing targets and bonuses....
When I was much younger I remember fitting nobbly Winter tyres to the front wheels only of my car, an orange Allegro 1.3, and all was well, never got stuck.
I was thinking of doing the same with my current car, but was advised to fit them to all wheels, rather than just the front.... Read more
We know winter tyres operate better below 7c and on snow etc.
However how do they work when faced with a cold sand drift across a road ?
Sure enough this winter with the strong easterly winds huge amounts of sand have blown off the beaches and onto nearby roads and pathways. It's so bad in places that cars have become stuck in the middle of sand drifts and needed pulling out. I know the cars involved had summer tyres fitted and the drivers have gone to the coastal areas from inland urban towns so it's not surprising they are unaware of this well-known local coastal problem. The coastal locals don't even attempt to drive through deep sand drifts nor park where their car may get buried if they leave it exposed to sand blasting; the urban folks are often unaware of the danger.
So back to the question, do winter tyres function better than summer tyres when trying to drive through a sand drift or out of a sand drift ? (temperature of sand between 0c and 3c)
I have had the car a couple of months. After a few weeks I noticed a strong smell like burning plastic outside the car when I stopped after about 10 miles from cold.
I had the car checked by a HOnda dealer under warrant, nothing found.... Read more

A cheap and dirty thing do is just disconnect the charged battery for a while, say 30 mins and then reconnect and drive as normal (have your radio code though)

Can you hear the fuel pump running. 2 second with ignition on and all time when cranking/running. Do you have a spark. Regards Peter
My train of thought eventually arrived at this question after I'd been reading the thread about BMWs in winter conditions (ie no utterly-direct link implied at this stage).
Just as an aside: On Sunday night I was driving in east anglia after a quite-heavy snowfall. I didn't see tarmac for the first 35 miles. Nevertheless, my standard-tyred 90hp Astra was comfortable at about 50mph (in a straight line with at least 500yd visibility at all times, please note), and so on 3 occasions I overtook trains of 6 or 7 cars doing -honestly- 25-28mph, because I had 200 miles to do. I only mention this because, to my mild amusement, on all 3 occasions the car at the front of the train turned out to be a BMW !... Read more

Hi
I have a 9 yr old Corolla Diesel..I'm aware it could go on for years, but I'm very car dependent and also aware, the original exhaust and other bits and pieces may start to fail soon. It's hard to schedule garage appointments if things go wrong too with work.... Read more
Good choice of cars. My friend has a mazda 3 takuya and it's very nice. The asx has been under my radar until fairly recently but I think the 1.6 petrol would be my choice.
Looking on other forums, the diesel asx seemed to have dpf problems(particularly on the early models), I haven't seen any critisism of the petrol engine. Personally the high driving position of the asx would be the clincher for me....
Saw a car on the 18th Jan that boasted a road tax dated 31st Jan 2014 - always thought it was impossible... the background colour was used quite recently too, it's a red / pink. The car was a 60 reg Vauxhall. What don't I know here ? Read more
It's also possible to get 12+ months through a dealer when buying a new car, ie the remainder of the current month plus 12 months onwards.
Many dealers can't be bothered to do this though as they get nothing out of it.
A letter from the Vicenza local Police arrived today. It appears (although it is not entirely clear), that whilst driving an Italian hire car last August, I drove into an area that was restricted? The description (all in Italian) seems to say that a video camera idetified the car I was driving, because it did not have the relevant permit for that area?
Upshot is that they are requesting I pay a "fine" of either approx. €30 or €105 (again not clear).... Read more
Check with the car hire company if they have been in corrospodance with the Police and its genuine I would think they will take it from your CC.
