ASX v Mazda 3 - New car Time ? Dealer Discounts and advice - motormouth

Hi

I have a 9 yr old Corolla Diesel..I'm aware it could go on for years, but I'm very car dependent and also aware, the original exhaust and other bits and pieces may start to fail soon. It's hard to schedule garage appointments if things go wrong too with work.

Also wish avoid previous mistakes of spending lots on wear and tear, then deciding to change anyway. So it seems elective change is the way to go...but, there is little to temp me in my budget, which is about 12K cash plus trade in.

The 2 cars which I fancy most are ASX 1.6 Attivo list price c £16000 K with metalic, and Mazda 3..The petrol is cheaper, around the same price as the ASX, the Diesel a bit more, but obviously better economy ( I do 10-12K/year)

Ideally I would like the ASX, as I do a bit of work in the countryside, so parking a bit off road would suite the clearance of the ASX etc

My 2 choices are also driven by my main desires in a buy and keep car..Reliability, safety features both excellent in these, need to carry a bit of stuff with 4 adults occaisionally ( which the mazda will just manage)

I have little experience negotiating with dealers, as I tend to keep cars, is my budget likely to land me one of these...is there a better time of year to try....any better suggestions for a vehicle..?

Many thanks

The 2WD ASX will not get you off raod any further than any other 2WD car, it may have a bit more ground clearance but forget off road ability.

Hi

I'm not looking for off road ability as such. Sometimes just need to park in fields etc, so that extra clearance would help then, as well as going though moderate standing water. The motor has that high up feeling too, plus better load carrying. Both have traction control. I guess the ASX may cope better with the dreaded speed bumps too.

Mitsubishi have a current offer where they are upgrading buyers of the 2WD ASX to 4WD

It's only on the Diesel though, which are 20K..I would have do some deal to get that for 12K plus a trade in !! ?

just thought, when is the change in number plate, am I in a better position trying to 'do a deal asap' as I have funds ready before the plate change ??

Good choice of cars. My friend has a mazda 3 takuya and it's very nice. The asx has been under my radar until fairly recently but I think the 1.6 petrol would be my choice.

Looking on other forums, the diesel asx seemed to have dpf problems(particularly on the early models), I haven't seen any critisism of the petrol engine. Personally the high driving position of the asx would be the clincher for me.

Whichever you decide on, I think you would be getting a good car- enjoy!
