I second that. It is going to be expensive I'm afraid. Regards Peter

Most likley the cam belt but dont dismiss the fact that if it had been started & switched off again and started again it may of jacked up the tappets ! very common problem.

Two short starts in very cold weather can jack tappets up ! especially if the wrong grade of oil has been used.

Can you tell us what happened before the diagnosis of this problem? Was the engine starting and running as it should?

Even if the cam belt was broken you should be getting compression on a couple of the cylinder unless all the valves are bent which is a possibilty under these cirumstances.

Theoretically yes, but if the inlet valves are not opening it won't be drawing any air in to compress.

Is this a twin spark engine.

The instuctions for all compression testers I have used say to remove all spark plugs before commencing (to allow engine to turn over quick enough).

If you remove all the plugs on a twin spark and fit a compression tester there will be an empty plughole for the compressed air to escape through meaning no reading on the gauge.

If the above is the case refit one plug in each cylinder and retest with throttle wide open.
