The Scottish Parliament introduced the RET tariff on selected Calmac ferry routes a few years back, on a trial basis, and is now rolling it out generally, although with a couple of exceptions. The aim of RET is to reduce ferry fares, by subsidy, down to the equivalent cost of travelling the same distance by road.
My understanding of the RET is that cars are charged at £5 per journey plus 60p/mile with passengers each being charged an additional £2 per journey plus 10p/mile - this results in a charge for 2 people in a car of £9 per journey plus 80p/mile.... Read more
The wild camp theory is plausible. I doubt however they don't eat out and replenish supplies locally at much same rate as self caterers in cottages.

I have an annual car parking permit for my cars at our local train station (from April 12 to April 13. A week ago I got a "Parking Contravention Charge Notice" stating "No Valid payment". with the usual threats of £75 fine or £50 if within 14 days, othewise they will contact DVLA blah blah blah.
They dont let you challenge by phone or email -so I had to write a letter. On teh letter I told them they had made a mistake and thyey should check their facts. I also said thyat if I didnt hear back from them within 15 days with confirmation that the charge has been cancelled, any further correwpondence from me would incur a postage and handling costs of £5 per letter and cost of my time at £70 per hour. I would also hold them liable for ny legal costs I incur in getting those funds from them.... Read more
What about if you just ignore their letters & wait for them to take you to court. Then just produce your valid permit to the court & watch their red faces, don't know if they would award you costs.
Reminds me of few years back when my MiL was accused of not paying an electricity account - we had the stamped receipt of full payment within 2 days of receiving the bill....
Hi All,
Hoping for some advice on buying a car, just written of my 04 Laguna and am now limited to 2 weeks of courtesy car before I have to hand it back and am car-less.
I am not going to get another Laguna as have had so so many problems with it and has been a money pit over past 2yrs. Looked at Mondeo's before when I brought Laguna as need an economical estate. Given I have to pay excess etc... I am on a limited budget so am going to end up with a higher mileage Mondeo, 110k-140k probably. Can you experienced guys point out what I should be looking for with a Mondeo this sort of mileage, in general an 06 plate at that mileage is about £1800 on auto trader.
I understand as a diesel key things are full service history and type of driving, ie don't want something that has done lots of running back and forth before warmed up. What else should I look for when looking round the car of this sort of age/mileage and typical faults. As far as I can see online 125k and 145k are big services with lots of replacements (timing chain etc...) so if I am near those services want to make sure those have been done but is there anything else? Any key things to look out for on test drive'
Thank you in advance for all your help.

Watch for very expensive injector faults, similar to Renault in that they are coded to the car and dont like high mileages. Most will have suffered from extended oil services due to fleet use so check for usual high mileage faults. Usual modern diesel money pits are common, DMFs, DPF if fitted, Turbo failure again due to oil services being too far apart. Unless you really really need or want a diesel, a lower mileage 1.8 or 2.0 petrol is in my opinion the cheaper car to run. My friend runs a 1.8 LX that is at about 175k miles and has proven very strong.
However, watch suspension bushes, wandering over bumps and shonky handling are common with high miles, not massively costly to mend but inconvenient and may fail MOT. Ford makes them out of cheese for nice compliance, but they dont last!
Hi all, can anyone help!!! I've got a 53 plate Vivaro. It keeps going in to limp mode. I've changed all air flow sensors, EGR valve, timing belt, alternator, fuel filter, air filter, turbo unit and battery. Now!!! If I leave it for a while, it will start and tick over, as soon as I press the accelerator pedal it cuts out. What is wrong with my van? Read more
Thanks for that! Look to getting a diagnostic check again, last time it came up with no fault codes.

I can appreciate that, we have a GSD. Sounds as though you have an electrical fault then, difficult as it has multiplexed electrics, you need to find someone with a Lexia code reader, have a look on the French Car forum.
My car has decided that on occasion it will not start. However if I peersist with the at short intervals it will start after about 5/7 minutes. This started about three weeks ago and it symptomatic of a battery being dead untill it starts again and it fires just normally as though nothing had happened. There is no warning, nothing to say to yourself it is acting up everything is normal untill I try to start it. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

I would suggest you get the battery tested.Because this vehicle is fitted with a logic cranking circuit, any low battery condition can cause a non start rather than rapid clicking. It could easily have the original battery fitted.Another possibilty is an intermittant starter motor.not an unknown fault on these.hth
