Re the vibration, it sounds to me like the exact same fault that a friend had with his Wolsely 4/44. This was in the early seventies. He had bought the car cheaply from a gypsy who had fitted a new clutch but had messed-up on the job.

I used to own a 15 cwt Commer van so we borrowed the most enormous four piece vehicle ramps from work. They were huge and gave a lift of about two feet. Gearbox off, clutch cover off and yup the pressure plate had been installed back to front!...

Mercedes-Benz recommends that the automatic transmission oil and filter are changed once at 37,500 miles on the C 220 CDI Sport Coupe. Cost about £220. It seems very early in a car's life to carry out such a change. Is it really necessary and what is/are the reason(s) for this? Read more

No, my local garage is good but not an MB specialist. I think I'll take your good advice and go to an MB Indy. Thanks for taking the trouble to follow up.

Driving into work on my 15 mile commute this morning spotted 2 cars pushed off the road onto the verge of major roads, one was a 61 plate Q3 and the other a 62 plate A3. I appreciate that VW and Audi get a lot of flak on here about their products but to see these 2 cars within a mile of each other was a shock. Its quite rare to see stranded motors these days.

A couple of miles later saw another car die when it managed to hit a wall doing about 60mph. That needed more than the AA to sort it. Read more

"1998" explains that - it was before GM had done their worst. Generally Saabs before 2000 were good cars: twice I very nearly had one.

Car was left 4 weeks while owner away. Now fuel pump does not run for 1~2 secs when ignition turned on and car will not start . I have checked the fuse (31) and that the cut-out has not popped.

Which is the fuel pump relay please? (I cannot tell from the Haynes manual.)... Read more

Many thanks.

There is voltage in the pump wire (Violet/Orange in my evolution) but I'm not yet sure it is getting the full voltage. I find it hard to tell in the brief period it is live on switch-on and while cranking I'd expect the voltage to drop. I'd like to bypass the relay but I've so far failed miserably to identify the right relay. I'll get back to it today and identify the relay by pulling them in turn until the power at the pump disappears. (Why do the circuit diagrammes in the Haynes manual show relay a, relay b, etc etc when there's no plan of their layout and the auxiliary fuse box does not label them, only the fuses?) ...

I had a new clutch/flywheel fitted back in May, to replace the DMF (which was failing rapidly). I purchased the new clutch kit from a respected supplier, and contacted a garage recommended to me from the Skoda forum. They fitted the new clutch kit, and had to buy a new release bearing, as the one which had been supplied with the clutch kit, had been destroyed in transit by the Royal Mail.

So, the job was done, and I drove back home through heavy traffic, and handed the car over to my wife who would then use it as her work car.... Read more

John, this is nearly a 4 year old thread ?

My wife is in the market for a year old Jazz CVT. We've been offered a year old Hybrid by a Honda dealer. We hadn't considered a Hybrid but the price for this one is attractive and all Hybrids have the CVT transmisssion. The reviews on the Hybrid are broadly favourable. my one reservation is the battery pack which is expected to last the life of the car but I see that Honda will only guarantee the battery pack for five years. Should the battery pack be a concern? I've had Hondas before and they are pretty bullet proof, it would be my intention to do what servicing I can, myself ( using Honda parts to maintain warranty ). Any thoughts would be appreciated. Read more

Honda Hybrids give you instant extra power when needed

The Insight I drove must have had that feature missing. It made a lot of noise to suggest power was being produced, but between the engine and the wheels it seemed to disappear!

OK, so i'm 21, I passed my test just over a month ago and I'm looking for a car. My price is max 2500 and it has to be diesel.
I've narrowed it down to a 2004 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi, a 2002 Polo 1.4 TDI sport and a 2004 Skoda Fabia 1.4 TDI.

Which is best? I have a feeling the Focus will be more reliable and cheaper to fix but the insurance is better for the Polo and Fabia (300 more for the Focus though my thinking is that if someone were to go wrong on the ones that are cheaper to insure I would have that extra 300 available towards the cost of repair). I don't want to go any bigger than a Focus.
I've tralled through review websites but I can't make up my mind.

I would consider other similar cars such as ones in the VAG group but these are the cars that are available now to buy.... Read more

Why do you want a diesel? I would work out the costs if I were you. You know the premium you pay for the engine, the more expensive fuel, and the extra servicing costs, so you can calculate the extra costs if any given your mileage. A petrol engine might work out cheaper.

I have a 2005 Renault Espace. I noticed when i was on the motorway that the car would begin to overheat. i pulled over and loosened the radiator cap. That seemed to release pressure in the system and then magically the car woudl run fine again on the motorway.

I brought the car into the dealer and asked them to perform a pressure test. The car failed and they said the 'Engine is Broke'. The hard part is i am in Luxembourg and English is not prevelant and i cannot seem to get a good explanation. All anyone is willing to tell me is that my engine is broken and i need to replace the engine.... Read more

If the leakage is not to bad you can sometimes overcome the problem by leaving the filler cap loose, this vents the system and stops coolant loss.

Never heard such a load of total b******s in my life.
