Hi
I have just bought a Ford KA for my daughters first car and it has developed a squeal, I sprayed WD40 on the auxiliary belt and in the general area and the squeal stopped for a time but then came back the next time we started the car.

Looking on different forums I see the auxiliary belt squeal has been discussed at length, so following the advice I took the car to a local garage I always use and have never let me down in the past, they changed the auxiliary belt but the noise continued, they took it back in and replaced the tensioner and another pulley but again the squeal has continued.

They are now saying it could be the alternator or water pump but obviously I don't want to change both of these if it is only one, is there a way of narrowing this down or isolating one of them to see if the squeal is still there.

Any help will be appreciated with this as my daughter doesn't want to drive it with the squeal, I told her to get used to the joys of motoring.

Water pumps on these are relatively cheap and easy to replace. I'd do that first. If it was the alternator I'd expect it to make noises too, not just the belt.

Let me give a brief info. about my car - I haven't driven it in about 1-2 months and today i switched the car on; 1st problem was the dying start on the system - it sounded as though the engine had trouble starting up with a pessimistic start - I don't have a clue what that is about especially considering that my car has done less than 12,000 miles in total...

I couldn't quite decide from your post whether you got your car started or not, i'm assuming it did start as you say you may be using it today. But the reason the engine turned over slowly was because it hadn't been used for some time resulting in the battery having a depleted capacity. You need to either go for a good run of 1 - 2 hours or get a small battery charger/ conditioner that can be left connected for a couple of days or permenantly if you'r going to leave it unused again for a long time.

The pipe looks to be the air intake pipe from the air filter. It won't stop the engine running if loose but should be connected so that the engine get clean air. Was probably left off by mistake at the last service.

Please take the time to read this as im desperate for some help.

I have a peugeot 307 hdi xsi 136 bhp on a 06 reg. I foolishly lent it to a friend who accidentally filled it up with petrol and then continued to drive it without realising. After cleaning the fuel out and refilling with fresh fuel the car still would not start, and even after towing to attempt to bump start it still would not start.... Read more

Have to agree with dieselnut on this one, what most people don't realise is the internals of the pump, which are machined to VERY close tolerances, are lubricated with the fuel oil itself!

Petrol is no substitute for oil....

The Citroen C1 / Peugeot 107 / Toyota Aygo can be had with automatic: she should try whichever of these has the most convnenient dealer (if there's a choice, Toyota dealers are usually more helpful); she should also look at the Hyundai i10, which is a 1.2 and therefore a bit livelier as well as roomier.

Avant read my mind. My niece has a lovely Hyundai i10 which is surprisingly good and one hell of a warranty so she has peace of mind. Friends have had poor experiences with Smart cars and would not go there again. Good luck with your eventual choice. Concrete

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I have a 2003 Ford Ka Style and just one day after they had been working perfectly my interior fans just stopped working, unlike most posts I see my fans DON'T work on ANY settings at all, whereas its common to only work on 4, I know there are a few things it could be; the switch, the motor etc

Has anyone else had this experience that could tell me the particular part it is so I don't spend a bomb buying different parts for them not to work?... Read more

You really need to access the motor to check the power and earth circuits. This can be done from passenger footwell, behind the glove box/tray.hth

Hi Everyone this is my first post. I have decided to sell my 25k miles 1997 S Type privately because the price I am being offered in part exchange sucks.Has anyone used Auto Trader "Quick Sale" or anything similar? It looks like a good way to get a fair mid market price.I know I might get a better price if I advertise it in the for sale pages but I don`t want to spend lots of time and effort with tyre kickers. Hi, had a slight misfire on my BMW, felt like a fuel problem that has got worse, it now had a blank spot when accelerating from 500-1000rpm seems okay over this with no back fire, I have replaced all filters plugs, leads, dist, ECU, cam sensor, and injectors and have checked the fuel pump, it now has no power under pressure, okish on the flat and down hill but struggles up hill, i have noticed that 1 and 4 plugs run dry and 2 and 3 are wet/normal could the 02 sensor and cat converter be the problem? I have no check engine code light on this model, Thanks Read more

I recently bought a mk 2 fiat punto (52 plate). When turning the key in the ignition it is very difficult to turn, and can take a few minutes to click it into place.

I know it is a common problem with these cars for the key to wear down, and therefore not turn the ignition very well, however, as i have 2 keys for it that both work all the other locks fine, i thought it might be a problem with the barrel.... Read more
