Hi all,

I've got £4000 to spend and looking for a family soft offroader 4x4. Ideal for family needs and with covering 10k miles a year petrol or diesel is not important.... Read more

I have had a hilux surf, x-trail and landcruiser Colorado

The x-trail is not a great car - dear to repair and the petrol is very juicy. They are more like a big estate to be honest

The surf is a great car but are imports so insurance is twice the price. Also they are rear wheek drive and have a lot of power so mine wandered off sideways several times in the wet, even at low speeds

The landcruiser is a superb car - just sold my old P reg after 3 years - it had done 169k and still drove really well. Never gave me a days trouble. Unfortunately they are also guzzlers - hence why I had to sell mine

I have heard the Rav4 is very good but try to go for a low mileage petrol if you can't get a diesel.

Definitely avoid freelanders at all costs lol

Grand vitaras seem to have a few issues too so do your research

Happy hunting!

:-)

What exactly is the point of the modern trend for great big wheels surrounded by a tiny fringe of rubber? Unless one can guarentee driving on billiard-table smooth tarmac all the time (a laughable ambition in the UK), all they do is knock your teeth out, and get damaged very easily.

Define "reasonable".

In this case it wuld appear to mean; "to fit the wheelarch of something designed for smaller wheels". That's not a good reason, just the wrong wheel for the car.

I ordered the above car on Jan. 14th 2012. The garage has been very slow in giving me any timescale for delivery. Is there any difficulty or delay in these cars coming to Spain. They say that automatics are slow on the production line. Can anyone offer info. on this matter. I'm really concerned because I've already given them my car as part exchange.(silly me) Read more

That's no worse than I used to average in my diesel B-class - one of several reasons why it was unloved, mainly relating to the diesel engine. Your petrol B-class sounds as if it' been a good buy.

This morning went to fuel up on the way to taking swmbo to work and all the pumps covered except for the v-power diesel, luckily the attendant recognised swmbo is a doctor and allowed us to fill up as there is no public transport here in west wales before 8 in the morning and after 6pm, Read more

Some news reports have suggested some garages are rationing. I remember during a previous strike the lateral thinker Edward de Bono suggested people be allowed to fill up as much as they wanted as long as it was over a minimum amount of fuel - say 25 litres. That way people only queued when they had capacity in their tank and not repeatedly for small amounts. Good idea but hard to enforce I guess.

My partner was driveing home last night when her car just stopped, felt like no fuel being pumped to it, I checked relay , fuse etc.. all good. When you turn the key you can hear the pump working but it doesnt sound like normal, ( a bit louder ) . Could it be blocked or something like that and how would I check that ?

Has anyone had the same problem ?... Read more

Do double yellow lines apply to a vehicle parked on the verge of a country road wholly off the carriageway and causing no obstruction to traffic. Read more

You would need to know who owns the land on which the vehicle was parked; unless it is privately-owned, then, yes, the parking restrictions probably apply.

This quotation from a local authority would seem to bear it out:...

In a nutshell, while in the process of jump starting my 330i, I inadvertently touched the jump leads together while the leads were connected to my wifes 120d. It was connected in the boot direct to the battery.

The car cut out and now wont start, it just cranks over and some warning lights have appeared on the dash. Anyone got any ideas as to what the issue might be? I have tried my handheld diagnostics and it wont connect with the car.. Read more

You may have blown one of the fusible links.Next to battery is a white plastic box.Carefully unclip the cover and check the strip fuses .You may need to use a test light or meter as I think they are the sealed type so a blown one is not easy to identify visibly.hth
