Hi all, this has got me really stumped!!! My astra is running really really hot, has hardly any acceleration, but revs fine when stationary. My problems started a few months back when the woodruff key wore and made the crankshaft pulley loose, sending the timing way out!! After fitting a new pulley and key, and correcting the timing everything seemed to be fine, but then the car started to show the same symptoms again a couple of weeks later, so i started to strip her down and found a large pool of oil in the maf sensor!!! Anyway cleaned this out and checked everything that i'd done previously, but could find nothing, however the car is still running like a lump of lard and couldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding, and a short trip to town and back (about 2.5 miles) will have the electric fan kicking in!!! Please can anybody help????? To give you an idea of how much power its losing, it couldnt even drive up my ramps!!!!! Read more

Load area over nearside wheel arch is the auxiliary heater. Below the heater housing is a discharge point for moisture from the heater. On my vehicle the hose, that I assume connects to this discharge nipple and routes the water to an external point, is missing.

I have connected a piece of garden hose in the same place as VW garage connected a piece of 'rubbish' pipe (tried to charge me £108.00 ha! ha!) Question,,,,,where is the eternal discharge point ?? Read more

Hi Peter... the heater housing is ABOVE nearside wheel arch. The discharge 'nipple' (slightly smaller diameter than a hosepipe) about 2.5 inches long, protrudes from below the heater housing. many thanks again Paul

I was stopped by the police for driving through a bus gate (I didn't think it applied at 7pm) and was just going to get a fine (no points) until they checked my details and discovered my license had been revoked. So they charged me with driving without a valid license (and later phoned me to add driving without valid insurance as having a revoked license would invalidate my policy) they seized my car and left me to walk home.

I contacted the dvla and it turns out my license was revoked a month ago because I failed to surrender my license to get points added following a prior offence. However, I took my license in person to the court and paid my fine and had the three points noted. The court did not inform the dvla. My problem has come about because I forgot to update my address on my license so I didn't receive any letters from dvla and therefore had no idea that my license had been revoked.

I know this is my fault and that as a result I was driving illegally but I wonder if I might be shown any leniency by the court as I wasn't trying to avoid paying insurance or driving without having sat a test etc. nor was I doing anything dangerous. I see that no license = 3 points and no insurance = 6 points minimum, plus I already have 3, so there is the potential for me to go over 12 points. Will I really lose my license all because I forgot to update my address? Please give me hope! Read more

Right lets start..

The original offence that you were stopped for will stand and you may well get a summons for this. Whilst they could disqualify for this very, very doubtful....

Hi there guys,

I'm looking for a bit of advice regarding what could possibly be wrong with my car... a few days ago, on my short drive to work, the engine started making some strange noises. Nothing too loud or severe, but noticeable. I continued to work, and turned off the engine. The car would then not restart at all.... Read more

Seen all kinds of things in these, cam phase sensor is set to an air gap, only way I can see for this kind of damage happening is the cam/drive sprocket moving, possible sheared sprocket key, loose sprocket or broken cam shaft.something has to have impacted it.

Anyway,as soon as the cam cover is off you'll know, not as easy as it sounds, these have a injector seizing in problem, and they have to come out befor the cam cover can come off.point of interest is the original rocker arms, hydraulic lifter and securing yoke on these have been modified by manufacturer,so I renew every one,all valves, pricey but it doesn't do this again...

I bought my Subaru in Nov 2011. It is a Y reg, but has a very low mileage for a car of this age (57,500) and was in perfect condition inside and out. A few days ago I was involved in an accident which was not my fault. A courier van hit the side of my car whilst trying to overtake another van (which he also hit) on the oncoming side of the road, which was signalling right. The courier van driver immediately admitted full liability and signed a piece of paper at the time of the accident to say so. The damage to my car is cosmetic only. It is completely driveable. The wing mirror was damaged, the off-side rear passenger door dented (but not badly), wheel arch damaged slightly and the rear bumper has a small crack in it.

My insurance company wanted to write my car off without even inspecting in, due to its age. They do not take the low mileage into consideration. I do not want it written off, and when I told them this they said that I would have to speak to the underwriters of the policy and see if they would be willing to discuss repair options with me.... Another option here is to let 'em write it off and buy the writeoff abck from them. The settlement would then be the difference between the writeoff value and what they want for the "scrapper".

Then you get a local bodyshop to fix it for cash, using scrap parts for the mirror, bumper etc....

Just been sorting out some old MotorSport magazines from the 1970s. In one there a Triumph TR6 10,000 mile test. There is talk of quality control. Another staff member's Dolomite had numerous faults on delivery. Non - functioning brake lights, heated rear window, heater blower switches, imbalanced wheels, leaking screen, rear end clonks and no handbook nor cigarette lighter! Read more

If my memory serves me right the dolly sprint was one of the first volume cars to have 4 valves per cylinder, but used to blow head gaskets because of a design fault on the head which I think was alloy and if it was was a very early attempt at using this design.

The head was an excellent design - all sixteen valves operated by just one OHC and an ingenious system of rockers....
