we live 4 miles up crazy mountrain track in spain, and currently have a 1991 nissan patrol.
with a baby coming, we want to upgrade our 4x4;
something more comfy, better and faster on the roads.....but tough off road with low ratio too. short wheel base better but not too important.
the budget is 4k - 7k.
the rav4 and hondaCRV look too lame, the Xtrail is too big.
what about the terrano2, or the kia sorento?
pleae help, it is a mindfield out there.

Hi just had the near side CV boot changed on my 2003 Audi A3. On leaving the garage there was no problem until about 10 miles later when my ESP light illuminated and stayed on. Took the car back to the garage where they said that it was nothing to do with what they had done but they said my steering angle sensor was faulty and would cost over £250 to put right, I also told them at the time that I had noticed that my steering wheel was no longer straight! Anyway they could not fix it until next week. This weekend I had to do a long distance trip to France during which time I noticed a lot of fresh grease over my nearside wheel, so I took it to a French garage. At the Garage in France the mechanic reported that the new CV boot had come off!! While he was fixing that I asked him to check the tracking, which hey presto was way out also! So he reattached the CV boot properly this time and fixed the tracking. After this was carried out the steering wheel was pointing in the right direction and the ESP light reset itself, therefore saving myself over £250! My question is could the original garage who changed the CV boot incorrectly in the first place have disturbed something to affect my wheel tracking? They deny it could have been their fault! I hasten to add before my trip to the garage I had no problems with my steering wheel being off centre or my ESP light. If you got this far thanks for reading! Read more
Don't suppose you need this suggestion, don't go near that garage again, and be thankful they didn't perform anything complicated. If they've done other work on the car prior to this i'd get someone competent to check it over.
Hello, I am considering buying a repo'd Ford Focus (X Reg) 1.6 Ghia, however it has no keys. I was wondering what sort of task would it be to change the ignition and door locks. I have noticed on Ebay that you can buy ignition, lock and key, but some also come with the ECU. Is it necessary to change the ECU? and is this a major job or more of a plug and play? Many thanks for your time. Read more
Contact Ford with the VIN number and ask if they can provide a replacement set of keys with immobiliser of remote fob. Regards Peter
This car (WJ 03 YED) has been in the family since new. Has now done about 80k miles. I had it for 4 years - ran it in carefully.. no problems with oil consumption. My niece has had it for last 18 months... rang me last night to say its "drinking oil" (5 litres in 2000 miles) - also engine management light comes on from time to time.
Niece says that exhaust doesnt have blue smoke... no signs of it dropping oil ...do you have any "wisdom" on likely problems, or whether these are known faulkts.... Read more
She does know how to fill the oil and where the levels are on the dipstick just a thought.
When my headlights are on there is a loud buzzing noise coming from them. i believe it has to do with the adjustment to the beam level which is operated from the cabin manually. Currently i have lodged the the switch between 0 and 1 and the noise has ceased and the lights are fine. Can someone tell me how to put it right? I have never used this function but fear it could be the cause of Mot test failure or ControlTechnique as it it is called here in France. Read more
Thank you wmo for your reply. i was afraid that would be the case. My car is well out of warranty of course so i guess i can expect a large bill.
I need to download a sat nav application to my new blackberry torch 9800 phone.

About 18 months ago we changed from Pirelli to Michelin Pilot Sport, understanding that road noise would be reduced. Quite right but over this time we have to replace 3 tyres well before due mileage because of side-wall blebs. No damage to wheels or kerbing incidents. Anyone else with similar experience? Read more
Bulge on the outside wall in each case. Could be pothole related as we have dreadful roads here in S Oxon. but there is no wheel damage or sign of kerbing apart from the usual scuff marks after 100K! I would have thought such an expensive tyre would be required to cope with most UK road conditions. Double whammy - roads nor tyres "not fit for purpose"?
I bought a 1.4 diesel c3 52 plate and filled it up with diesel then when I got home diesel started spilling from the petrol tank. I have just found out that the petrol tanks are plastic so it can't rust. I do know it's spilling from the top of the tank
So I haven't damaged it while driving. The really confusing thing is that the fuel gage hasn't changed and it's apparently still full even after filling 2 buckets up with diesel.
Does anyone know why this has happened and what could be wrong.
Is it possible to over fill even after I stopped fuelling at the first click of the pump. Thanks Lisa

As to passing MoT,it would depend on position of leak.Only the filler and cap are checked.
So idiot that i am managed to lose the service books to my 2004 Mazda 6. I still have the manual/folder that the service book was originally in however I have no idea where the service books have actually gone. I bought my car through a dealer however there was only one previous owner and they had had the car serviced religiously ever 5000km. The car has absolutely no issues what so ever and I am really wanting to sell it except I know without service books I'm going to be getting alot less. Can anyone suggest or know of anything I can do? I am desperate here!! Read more

Its funny you mention the Xantia because that was actually my guess at what you drive.
You can think more recently too, the Range Rover Sport is a perfectly fine car but does it have anything over the normal one? If anything slightly less practicality but massive rims, but Rangey's modern day clientelle are the rich and famous celebrities, the Katie Prices, the Colleen Rooney's etc. I dont think when the original was built they had that in mind!
