Lot of books on this subject, hardbacks often have too many photos/chapters on the Iconic/Surfer side of things. Fascinating part of Richard Copping's 63 page small format book covers it's history and evolution. Always assumed the van/camper/microbus was another Porsche jotting, but not so. The odd mix of the British Major Hirst, Dutch Businessman Ben Pon, and German Heinz Nordhoff gave birth to it. The book makes use of VW Archive images and original artwork, together with historic advert photo's. There's the exaggerated artwork of Bernd Reuters, and the clean pure photography of US Ad Agency DDB. Pleasant afternoon read which can be revisited, or breezy little holiday book for 'a bloke' age 25 to 65-ish. Under £4 delivered to armchair mechanics.
Hi,
I'm hoping someone might be able to give me a bit of advice on my air conditioning.
When I bought the car second hand, the air con wasn't working at all. I took it to ATS who run a test and found the system was empty. They regassed it and it worked perfectly for about two days, and then just stopped.
I took it back in and they used a dye to check for leaks, but there weren't any, and the system was still fully gassed and oiled.
When pressing the switch, apparently the compressor wasn't kicking in. However, the switch itself seems to be making a louder than normal click when you press it. Louder than it used to be, and it sounds like it's coming from the switch itself as opposed to inside the engine bay. I've tried checking the fuses which seem fine.
Does anyone else have any ideas at all? If it might be the switch, is this something that I could check myself? (VERY VERY basic knowledge of cars, changing a distributor cap is about my limit lol) Read more
Remove switch and see what's going on. Try making the connections manually if you think the switch might be broken.
Aldi's hoppy IPA is ideal to slake your thirst on a warm eve, but tonight my price-versus-quality aim settles upon the Hyundai i10 of the white wine world:- Asda Chenin Blanc, £3.58 (75cl) South African Chenin Blanc. Seems rude not to quaff it at that price. Cheers. Any other top tip tipples welcomed. Read more
Pere Anselme La Reserve d l'Aube Syrah-Merlot 2010. To quote that Oz Clark= 'You wouldn't normally blend the rich scented Syrah with the softer, milder Merlot—but this works. The wine is very warm and round, positively lush in its spiced plum sauce and stewed cherry way, but there’s a bit of tannin there too and it all makes for a good, self–indulgent red.’ About £6 a shot, but 6 free with my Spectator sub, perfect anitdote to my women reading Heat.
Tolls go upto £2.50 for cars next year-reason to reduce congestion by making people use different routes. Read more
Southbound/clockwise the road would run well, but traffic using the tunnels will always cause some delays, note the queuing trying to enter the tunnels after passing the toll booths.
Much of the problem is down to half wit drivers actually having to use some judgement and road positioning to filter themselves into 4 lanes without pandemonium resulting, plus anywhere there is a speed limit for even a mile causes all sorts of concertina hiccups....

Am I right in thinking that you bought a car ,had an HPI check done when you bought it ,that was clear?
Has The same car has now been registered as a total loss claim.
If that's the case ,it may be you can claim against the company who did the HPI check for you.
Some of the hpi companies offer insurance free of charge against this problem.
