VW Polo 16v 1.4 Sport - Heavy Oil Consuption - A N Cade

This car (WJ 03 YED) has been in the family since new. Has now done about 80k miles. I had it for 4 years - ran it in carefully.. no problems with oil consumption. My niece has had it for last 18 months... rang me last night to say its "drinking oil" (5 litres in 2000 miles) - also engine management light comes on from time to time.

Niece says that exhaust doesnt have blue smoke... no signs of it dropping oil ...do you have any "wisdom" on likely problems, or whether these are known faulkts.

I would say that the engine warning light has come on from time to time. when mu daughter used the car drove with it on for at least 3 months (she was also disinclined to check oil levels.. would wait for red light to come on..) However niece has had car for 18 months and it is only recently it has been swallowing oil...

would be very grateful for yr advice

Have you checked the car yourself. 2.5L of oil in 1000 miles would be a smoky exhaust if it was bring burned.

Check the sump gasket with the engine running-oil will only leak out when it is sloshing around the crankcase. The old puddle on the drive was caused by a failed oil seal that generally doesn't occur any more.

If it is a direct injection engine (FSI), a faulty injector can cause bore washing-which is terminal. Let's hope it isn't that! You wouldn't necesarily see blue smoke at idle since worn riongs tend to only smoke under load.

Check for blocked breathers i guess oil change not happened while she had it and letting it run to empty huge mistake.

Get her into checking the oil on the flat, and water levels basic checks can save this engine neglect will kill it. :-)

She does know how to fill the oil and where the levels are on the dipstick just a thought.
