modern cars are generally very reliable

They are in the sence that the likelyhood of a specific part failing are much less than in years gone by. However the modern car has so many more parts than in years gone by that the likelihood of a failure are exactly the same as in years gone by...

Advertorial alert!

The concerned staff at Kwik Fit are very worried that by driving with our windows down, we are collectively wasting £650,000 a year (cf £50,000,000,000+ collective annual fuel bill). Fortunately, the kindly souls have got a solution. They can recharge your air con for only £49 so you don't have to fritter away the £££s by driving with your windows down. ... Read more

That sounds like the combined effects of rolling resistance and aereodynamic drag.

Rolling resistance has a linear relationship and so as it's relative significance changes, the overall resistance changes with a linear, square, cube relationship....

c4 picasso

I recently -although laset Dec, bought c4 grand picasso @Carworld, Then my turbo charger broke down and took it to a certified citroen repairer. by the way its still under warranty-09 registration. However the Citroen wont honor the warranty as when carworld did the 20k service before it was delivered to me, apparently they havee usedd a diffferent oil which has caused the breakdown of the turbocharger. Im still trying to contact Carworld to let them know the problem. im worried that I would end up paying the bill as im sure they will dispute nor deny the service that cause the breakdown of the said parts. I would love to hear any advice or any recent experience that happen similar to my situation.. Read more

Chickenwire - welcome to the forum.

Sorry I've had to edit your post, but we have to be careful about 'naming and shaming' dealers. It's OK to state facts, as in the comments about Carworld above, and these usually tell the story well enough. But we ask posters not to make subjective comments, particularly about people's behaviour or attitude, which I know all too often falls short of acceptable.

Hi there

Recently the engine my 1997 Peugeot 406 2.1 LX DT has been racing at low revs when sat at lights or in traffic and then the diagnostic light would come on and the engine stop. It would of course restart straight away but then the engine would starting cutting out if coasting in gear when it dropped below 2000 revs. It wouldnt do it all of the time, just some of the time but bit of an annoyance when you discover the lack of power steering and silence when the car is in motion!! Anyway I got it checked out on Tuesday and found out today that the Fuel pump is on its way out and it wouldnt be worth repairing it even with a reconditioned or second hand pump and was told to 'Ditch the car'. Anyway was quoted £800 which I assume is for the parts/labour too but looking at legit websites, Fuel pumps for my type of car average around £100. Is this about right for a replacement pump? Or am I being fobbed off by my mate who has always done loads of work on my car in the past.... Read more

If you get a Bosch pump you will also need the injector pipes as the Lucas pump has the outputs in different positions, although they can be made to fit the engine won't run - guess how I know! I think that the existing throttle cable will fit the pump other than that I think it should be self explanatory.

Renewal time again, and I was just looking at the cost of the Legal Cover. At £27 for the year, this sounds quite expensive and I expect there's a company out there selling stand alone cover for considerably less....I just can't find it !

Ideally, there would be a combined product that would cover all 3 cars in our household. Read more

Back in the day, when there was a young damsel by the name of 'Lucy BC' affiliated with this here website, she would often say "that there legal cover is rubbish..." or something similar!

In all seriousness, those in the proper motoring legal business don't tend to reckon it's much cop. Allegedly they buy the policies in bulk for a pittance each, then sell them on via people's policies for about 30 quid or so. Not a bad profit margin!...

Anyone else notice the '5 years complimentary servicing' offer on the Alfa Mito? I wonder how that works. Perhaps something like this:

Perhaps Alfa should do away with the flirty servicing and just dispense a free pair of shoes with every Mito?? In a matching colour scheme of course :-) I'd imagine anybody driving a Mito is likely to be deeply enticed by a pair of sexy shoes ;-)
