I am contermplating buying a 2008 Ford Focus estate from a car supermarket. The RAC report states that the front discs are rimmed. What does this mean and is it an expensive repair?

Thank you.... Read more

'you need new brakes/pads, squire' has always been a bit of a racket

I should've put 'discs' not 'brakes'...

I keep reading about cars being fitted with the Stop/Start system, the latest Jag has it.

Then I think of driving through the Blackwall Tunnel, London, every day, in the winter, it can take an hour. Does the system turn the headlights down?... Read more

Small turbo petrols are very promising-but they won't beat diesel in sheer efficiency.

The big gains have already been been exploited in automotive engines. Government needs to put put bigger incentives on domestic CO2 emissions which are way bigger and full of easy pickings. But that is a political hot potato...!

Most likley EGR valve, but would advise diagnostic check to confirm and sometimes they can be cleaned but other times a replacement. Try and find a good independant renault specilist.

Now here's an interesting question. Somebody must buy new cars. It certainly ain't me. I assume that a lot of new cars of the cooking variety go to fleets. There are a lot of company cars both obvious (fleet) and non-obvious (purchased by self-employed etc). What percentage of new cars actually get purchased by the man or the woman in the street ? After 4 second hand cars , A Renault 5, a Polo, a Citrion BX and finally a short lived VW Vento, all self maintained, we purchased a new Ford Galaxy in 1998.

Reason it was virtually the exact same price as a fresh second hand one outta England, being an import....

HI, my chrysler voyager ac was not working so I bypass the clutch rlay and compressor started but the low pressure pipe did not frezzes . So I when in a garage to fill with gas, they did the complet job with vacum, leaks test, 10ml oil, UV and gas (0,96Kg), but still the crompressor did not work unless by bypass on relay.
I tested the circuit and is good, and mesure the pressure transducer and was with 3,6 volt ( has 3 wires, one ground and the others 2 where I made the mesure) , so 3,6volts is good pressure and for the clutch to engage it need to be between 0,451 to 4,519 ,
So I dont know why the compreeor is not working, the relay that controls the clutch is operated by the pcm grounding that relay, so I go to the pcm and conect the wire to groung and it engages the clutch.
I make the diagnostics in control panel but the colddown diagnostics ends always with the ac and rear wipe flashing.
what should it be the problem?
thanks Read more

I came across one of these with a similar fault that was caused by a broken wire in the curcuit to a coolant sensor. These engines have an additional sensor that switches the AC off if the engine is becoming too hot, so worth checking . There is also a de-ice stat in the evapoartor and if that has failed that too will turn the clutch off !

I was travelling northbound on the M42 this morning in the outside lane and as I was approaching junction 10 a 50 mile an hour speed limit sign was blown off it's stand and came towards me. At first I thought the sign was going to come through my windscreen but luckily it 'only' hit the side of my car causing minor damage to the driver and rear passenger door. The 50 speed sign was being used for southbound traffic and was on a metal frame. It is atemporary type of sign used in roadworks. I have notified my insurance co. and they have put their legal assistance people in touch with me (although I have not spoken to them yet). Who do I claim against? Read more

This site is becoming impossible to view with lots of adverts getting on the way down the left hand side. They are completely useless because they dont display properly and are unclickable in any case.

In fact they are a real pain as they interfere with the drop down links. Anyone know how to get rid? I have pop up blocker activated but it makes no difference.... Read more

Recently I purchased a secondhand Volkswagen Tiguan from my local dealer at the time I ask for the fitting of cruise control which I was told was available so I went fourth with the purchase after the purchase went through and I took the car away was told the cruise control unit would be ordered and available to be fitted sometime the following week only to be told 7 days later that due to a problem it was unavailable on my particular model. I have contacted VW and the dealer who have been let's say not very helpful and only informed me that only 3 rd party cruise control was available, it is an important option for me which I can't have I'm looking for them to take the car back and refund all money's given anyone have any advice? Thanks Steve Read more

You have no chance of a refund for the value of the car.

You might be refunded the cost of the cruise control if you have paid for it....

the fact that you've been told the minimum brake pad for the MOT would last 3-4x what they have surely you have the argument that they passed the van through an MOT unlawfully especially if the hazard lights and that didnt work as well.
