I e-mailed VW to see if you can specify Run Flats as an option when ordering a Touran Bluemotion. They have replied saying that RFTs are not an option across the whole range yet the brochure and website let you have Perth alloys and RFTs as an option?

I want RFTs put on the Cleveland wheels that it comes with as standard. Anyone know if I this is possible? Read more

My son was working in France last year and bought an ancient, left hand drive, Toyota Corrolla automatic. It only cost him £400 and has been a fantastic workhorse, touring both France and Italy before driving back to the UK with not a spot of bother.

Unfortunately he has now gone to Spain to work and left the car with me and asked me to scrap it. Although it is very elderly it is a fantastic runner and I would think it had several more years life left before it totally gives up, so it does seem sad to crush the car, besides which I am not sure whether I can legally do this in this country.... Direct Dial have refused to cover me when I have snow tyres on the car. They state that they should only be fitted when it snows!! How crazy is that?!

Can anyone advise me of a sensible insurance company that will cover me in such circumstances? I drive often to Austria in winter where it is an offence NOT to have snow tyres.... Read more

My 1996 A4 TDI is a nice old car that I have had now for more than 11 years - but it has one annoying feature: in daylight, and particularly when you are driving into the sun, the speedometer and rev counter are almost impossible to see against the light. At night the display lights up fine when you turn the outside lights on. I notice that other cars have the display lit up during the day - and it did occur to me that this might have once been the case with my Audi, but that the bulbs may have have failed or a fuse has gone at some time during the car's many years and nearly 200,000 miles. Does anyone know whether or not this model had daytime illumination of instruments? If it did, I can try to fix it - but I don't want to start messing with the dashboard if there was nothing there in the first place. Read more

Thank you for that - I will try it!

Have clutch failure on55k avensis which is still in warranty. No driving problems, but car taken in due to severe burning smell. On inspection clutch plate shows some wear with wear grooves still prominent, but slight scratching on the perimeter.Pressure plate in good condition.black dust evident..Have driven several high mileage cars over many years without clutch problems,so driver style unlikely to be a problem. Mileage is 90per cent motorway..Toyota say wear and tear, although have had two previous component failures on this car, brake caliper with metal fatigue and brake caliper with piston failure..any advice would be appreciated..could always buy a Honda or Beemer..fred4. I think you are right. I telephoned another and not only was quoted a cheaper price but also told they would look at it under warranty if they could.

Too late in my case as the dealer had already stripped down the cluth before telling me it would not be under warranty!

Hi,

i recently had the misfortune of having a light front end collision in my 306 hdi, external damage would be an easy repair for myself, however, both the passenger and drivers airbag were activated and are still in the deployed state, my main problem is that the engine will not turn over on the key, i have located the front impact sensor with red cap found to the rear of the battery tray, and pressed it to reset, but still no joy, i assume i will have to replace airbags before i can get engine running ? any info regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated,... Hello there,

Can cam belts snap through old age ?... Read more

There's not a lot of measurement evidence to suggest that the belt is more highly stressed under cranking or starting conditions. If the tensioner design is sub-optimal the belt may be loose with a cold engine, leading to the possibility of tooth shear.

The real problem other than the failure modes of the components described above, is drive resonance. It's very difficult to arrange not to have a resonance at some useful engine speed and high forces can be generated in the drive under these conditions. It is an important part of engine development to seek out and limit such resonances. Damped sprung tensioners such as the Litens are an excellent way of both regulating belt tension over a wide range of conditions and limiting potentially destructive resonances....
