Car not been used for 4 days. Jumped in, turned key, sounded normal for 2 secs and seemed to start then dash lights came on/stalled.

Turned key again, lively battery turned over starter motor again but this time the starter motor sounded what I can only describe as wheezy and not the same as usual, not engine cranking sound if you know what I mean. Car would not start, starter motor wheezy sound heard (never heard it before and been driving 20 years) and not the usual sound of car turning over to start.... Read more

Hi There,

I have noticed that i have water getting down into my tyre well under my boot. I have an idea that it could be going down the edge of the hatchback door but not sure. Anyone else have this problem or any details on this sort of thing.... Read more

Water can get in through the tiniest split in windscreen seals or door seals, or a grommet could have come out in the boot area. I once had to take a car back to the main dealer 14 times until they found where rain was getting in that soaked my footwell.

I have changed my mini from a dynamo to an alternator, following the instructions carefully. I did this (partly) because when I connected the car up to a battery charger to test the lights etc (the car has been off the road for two years) smoke started coming from the dynamo and the ignition light glowed brightly, even though the ignition switch was 'off'. When the switch was turned 'on', the light went out!

After changing to an alternator (and -ve earth) I have wired the car up to the battery charger again but the ignition light is very dim or non-existant, even though the bulb works and there is a voltage of 9.5v across the two connections in the bulb holder.

What could be causing this?

The car is a floor start Mk1 Read more

Thanks for your help. I traced the problem to a poor earth through the alternator small terminal. When I connect the wire to a proper earth (on the car body) the ignition light glows brightly.

Does this mean the alternator is likely to be faulty (I took it off a car in a scrapyard some 12 years ago, and have just fitted it for the first time (following my dynamo conversion).

I will be starting the car for the first time in a year shortly so all should become apparent then, and I will then check the output voltage from the alternator and replace it if necessary.

Thanks again

hi, my handbrake travels to about 9-10 clicks before holding and even then i don’t' trust it holds the car enough to leave out of gear. i have tried tightening the cable from inside the car and it doesn't seem to have made much difference, i have had new drums, shoes and cylinders as the old cylinders broke and thought this was the cause, but it still does not seem to hold.

I have been told my model does not have the adjuster in the drum, and that it is self-adjusting. I kwikfit employee told me to keep working the handbrake up and down this should adjust it….does anyone know if this takes a while or if my cable is possibly stretched, how do I tell?... Read more

I realised when i had radio turned off, that on the 1st gear change in my car (from 1st to 2nd) there is a slight clunky noise , strangely this only happens on start up when i moved about 15 meters ish, and after that everything is normal... the noise does seem to be coming from the front end, havent pin pointed it but seems in front of pedals- this is my guess.

previously this car was a motability vehicle which had, hand controls for braking and accelerators which have been removed.... Read more

I picked up an '05 Passat 2.0TDi sport last September and its been running fine since I got it - FSH etc and all seemed to be great.

In November (and literally for about an hour) the external passenger door handle stopped working. I would double click the key fob and all other doors would unlock, the inside door handle would work fine (on the passenger door) but it would not open from the outside. As it rectified itself so quickly I presumed that my passenger had tried opening the door too soon after or while I was unlocking the car and it had 'confused' the system and thought nothing more of it.... The settings on my audio unit seem to be lost most times when I get into my C Max. Features like the AVC which is the volume setting to compensatione for engine and raod noise as speed increases. This always reverts to zero meaning that I have to manually increase the volume. I know this is not a major hardship but all the settings revert to zero ro back to the factory settings. It's like the unit loses its memory. The Ford dealer where the car came from tried to fix this under warranty and even replaced the unit with one from another vehicle that they had and it seemed ok for a few weeks but now out of warranty they don't want to know.

The same symptoms with two units suggests to me that the problem may not be with the unit and instead something else linked to it. Is there a memory unit somewhere that may be to blame... Read more

And that's why I suspect an intermittent issue with the unswitched 12v t o the memory line, especially as you've tried another unit !

Interested to know the final outcome..............ebt

Just parked in Cardiff westgate street, Minimum charge 2 hours £5.90 with no signs outside,(NCP) so won't be parking there again. Here where I live it's easier to go to an out of town centre (Trostre Park) for llanelli or Forestffach for Swansea. Cannot justify paying nearly £6 for 2 hours parking in town centres any more. Carmarthen at least can park for free at tesco and Lidl or with a little walk park on the street for free, also some on street car parking free for half an hour! on top of this traffic wardens are polite and not going to get you for being a couple of minutes over. main problem here is actually people parking on pavements obstructing at night.

No more paying for parking! Read more
