Toyota Corolla - What can I do with an old French registered car - rooksilver

My son was working in France last year and bought an ancient, left hand drive, Toyota Corrolla automatic. It only cost him £400 and has been a fantastic workhorse, touring both France and Italy before driving back to the UK with not a spot of bother.

Unfortunately he has now gone to Spain to work and left the car with me and asked me to scrap it. Although it is very elderly it is a fantastic runner and I would think it had several more years life left before it totally gives up, so it does seem sad to crush the car, besides which I am not sure whether I can legally do this in this country.

Does anyone know whether the French “DVLA” would accept the fact that the car is scrapped and delete the details from their records or is there some other way of selling the car in this country legally. The French ‘CT” doesn’t expire until 2012 but it is out of the 6 month initial period when it can be legally sold.

Anyone got any ideas? I’m sure it would suit someone with a holiday home in France!

Where are you rooksilver? My friend needs a cheapie French reg car and we could sort out the CT at this end - it isn't complicated, it just has to be done fresh before the registration can be changed to the new owner.

Yes, I understand that whilst the Controlle Technique lasts for 2 years, and this one is current until end of March 2012, if it is retested it doesn't matter whether it passes or fails you still have 2 months in which to register the car with French authorities. That was my other option to drive over to Calais and renew the CT, but for the value of the car it wasn't really worth it. I'm near Silverstone (home of Formula 1 Grand Prix). If you send details of a phone number I can catch you on to: jonny.rudland@gmail.com I will give you a call. The car has already got the new registration plates so it only has to be a change of ownership.

Too far - what a pity. Thanks anyway.
You could try putting on a forum like Totalfrance - there are often people in the UK looking for cheap motors to use in France, where no car is cheap. 5/600 euros over there is what the eternally optimistic French expect you to pay for the rusty wreck at the bottom of their garden! Good luck.

Many thanks I'll have a look.
