Hello
I am having some issues with my Mondeo, it is struggling to start on the first, sometimes second attempt, I have been told this might be either a cam sensor or crank sensor issue.... Read more

Hi,
I have the above vehicle which last Thursday started to shudder, after about 20 miles when approaching a junction and slowing down it was not sustaining the speed expected from when changing gears, and took a lot for the speed to pick up, another 10 miles there was almost no movement in the vehicle.... I run my spark plug gaps at 30 thou-below the recommended gap to take the strain off the coil packs. This can cause alightly lumpy idle though.
What should the gap be? A .030" reduction sounds quite hefty
My brothers Corsa C 05 plate 34,000 miles has just snapped a cam shaft. Hes wondering if the inlet and exhaust cams are the same ? Also if the 1.2 and 1.4 cams are the same ? Any advice would be great thanks Read more
My brother bought his car 6 months ago on a private sale. The car has been running like a dream until yesterday. Just started making noises, firing off of 2 cylinders and the engine management light came on. He couldn't take it back to a dealer. Hes gutted if he knew this was going happen he would never have bought it. Is the 1.2 and 1.4 cams the same then, or are they different too ?
i can rock my back wheels to and fro when the car is on its wheels but when i have it in the air on axle stands there is no moment had a friend rock the wheels on the ground but cant find anything wrong need help is the bushes or the hubs many thanks matt Read more
Car is a 56-plate Ford Focus 1.6 petrol with 80,000 miles and full (independent) service history. I'd like to be able to jump on this problem before I'm let down.
Recently the car has been becoming increasingly difficult to start. It'll (almost) always start first time but frequently it'll take two or three seconds before the engine catches, and even then on one or two occasions the car has spluttered and not started even when it has appeared to start.
Also the car (very) occasionally misfires, particularly at higher revs (>4000 I'd say).
I've had the car 7 months now, and had it serviced when I bought it (at 71,000 miles so it's due another service quite soon). The engine has always been notably coa*** and rough under load -- not massively so, think along the lines of an early-2000s Korean engine, but noisier than I would expect a leading manufacturer to be. It's just on the upper edge of what I would consider acceptable noise for a 1.6 petrol. It is, however, quiet and stable at idle, and comfortably passed its MOT last week.
Before I mention all this to my mechanic I'd like a few pointers as to what may or may not be amiss. Any input appreciated.

A friend of mine is trying to sell his MX5 on ebay. Several times he's had people clicking "Buy it now" Then they do a HPI check and realise it was stolen and recovered 8 years ago and quickly pull out of the sale.
He never did a HPI when he bought it so he had no idea it had been stolen before.... Read more
People are also worried/confused about the insurance implications.
Such as higher premiums or lower payouts for a write off.
My Jeep runs on both Petrol and LPG. Sometimes she fires up fine on either fuel and purrs like a kitten. Turn her off and she will just not start. Leave it for a few hours and she starts again. So frustrating. Twice had to be recovered. She has new plugs, ht leads, distributor cap and rotor arm. Other times she fires starts and the the revs just die off and she stalls. The petrol pump is priming. Using a spare spark plug checked for spark. Whilst she is firing before she stalls, lovely blue spark. When she stops firing there is still a spark but weak and very intermittent.
Help please and thanx in advance. Read more
Firstly you could try and elicit a spark directly from the coil to earth(hold just shy of clean metal engine surface whilst engine is cranked on the starter) and if spark`s weak or non-existent then it`s possible the TDC sensor has had voltage drop-off with age.It sits on top of trans bell-housing,two wires attached......coil gets its signal from here.
Non starter.I read the threads about the fuel pumps/filters and am a bit lost.(
I am e retired old school mechanic, and this new stuff is a pain in the bum, with all these needless sensors.)I have checked LP fuel flow to pump, but read somewhere it needs to be 50psi or it won't prime the HP pump.Is this so?I know you shouldn't,because in good condition THERE IS 5000 PSI AT CRANKING there, but I cracked the feed line to the rail, and cranked the engine to see if fuel was flowing.I had a few air bubbles and a dribble of fuel.Taking things in sequence,is there a rule of thumb way to test LP pump pressure,eg blasts into container or just flows on exit from main filter housing?.Where is the HP pump micro filter?I have not yet checked the solenoid seal ,but heard it clicking .How much effect do sensors/ wiring plugs have to cause these symptoms? You young whizz kids must know, thanks in advance for any gen. Just had my first MOT (car 3 years old this month) and failed! Handbrake failure (7%). Has anyone else with a Mazda 3 suffered this? Read more
Didn't you notice that it needed quite a few 'clicks' to hold the securely? That's why we have MOTs! It's common for handbrakes to get a bit slack over time. It should be a cheap fix. Cheer up!I used to feel aggrieved by constant MOT failures-then I found a more sympathetic tester.

Possibly. But a modern engine reduces enrichment very quickly after a cold start. The extra fuel consumption is largely due to the extra friction of cold parts. THE OP is reporting a 50% increase in consumption. The engine must be suffering driveability problems at this point. Does it stumble, hunt at idle, white smoke from exhaust...?
