the 2 year old car has just had its annual service and now completed 22000 miles, it is used daily for a mixture of short and longer runs and has been fine except for a loose handbrake which despite frequent tightenings has been a problem

the service have checked the rear brakes and confirmed that the discs externally have corroded and that potentially the internal corrosion is the cause of the handbrake issue. this is fine except they won't replace them as a warranty issue (3 year warranty). i bought the car a year old from the main dealer in bristol (part of the colt car company Uk) and feel that after 2 years this should really be covered as the car has not been anywhere that should have caused excessive corrosion.... i would have thought your annual mileage was sufficient to keep the discs clear of rust. i wonder if you've got a sticky piston or two? could be tied in with your loose handbrake.

Perhaps it's worth taking it somewhere else, or even getting an Mot testing station to check it's braking efficiency?...

Need to change this bearing, are these ok to do at home or a nightmare to get the old bearing out like the ones were on my focus?!

thanks... Read more

You should find there is a slot or two in the casting, so you can use a thin punch to knock the old bearing out. it should be simple.

i have recently covered about 76 miles in my car and it seems to have used about 15 litres of fuel for this, which works out around 20-25 MPG. My car is a 2008 Ka 1.3 Style climate with the Duratec 69 hP engine, so it should be averaging 35-40 MPG. admittedly it was a mixture of city/a road driving, quite a bit of braking involved, but surely 20-25 is very low? i have had the car from new ,and its covered just over 7,000 miles since new. it's never been driven hard, i keep the revs low, change gear as early as possible, very cautious with my acceleration/braking, so cannot see where this extremely poor MPG is coming from. however it has been used for lots of short journeys, but usually does see the motorway once a month. the last service was its 1st service at around 3800 miles in June 2009. Dirty injectors? oil change needed ...? Read somewhere that it could be because of the air filter, i know that this has never been changed. Read more

You really need to do a cntrolled test by brimming the tank and going for a reason long run on the motorway driving at a reasonable constant speed, that will show you what it is cabable of, if its reasonably good you will then know that the problem is not with the car but the enviroment that its being driven in.

the cold weather doesn't help, is the engine running at normal temperature? a cold running engine is an inefficient one. hard braking and acceleration are the worst culprets for heavy fuel consumption as are short journeys as the engine often doesn't attain the correct operating temperature....

hi everyone, nice to meet you all. had the above car for a couple of weeks. Just thought i'd share what i think so far.

Was given a Golf Vi as a courtesy car for a couple of days and absolutely loved it. Much more refined and comfortable than the Golf V i owned at the time. i knew then, that i definitely wanted one !... Read more

Just what i was looking for, another 7sp dsg user....

i was doing a little research into Dual Mass Flywheels the other day. Some of the information came from Wikipedia, so i can't vouch for it's accuracy, but more than one website suggested the following. on the proviso that the driver of a DMF equipped vehicle drives it with some mechanical sympathy (no slipping the clutch, full throttle standing starts etc.), the time that the DMF takes something of a pounding is when the engine is started or stopped.

This got me thinking... Given the current trend for stop/start technology to reduce emissions, could this have a negative impact on DMF life? i know that starter motors, batteries etc are beefed up to take account of the stop/start facility, but i doubt whether anybody has started fitting a more robust DMF. ... what about that other great motoring invention - the Diesel Particulate Filter?

one would have through that during start-up there was bound to be a bit of over-fueling (or rather, under-combustion) and hence a surge of particulates. i know our Fiat multijet always likes to let out a generous puff of black soot every start, even when hot ;)

i was riding my moped on a main road early yesterday morning when i suddenly lost control (like slipping on ice) and then crashed through a hedge wrecking my bike and breaking my arm.

The police came and breathalysed me (totally clear) and said that there was a hGV yard up the road and i should take legal advice regarding being injured. i asked them how i could claim when there was nobody else around but they just said they couldnt tell me anything as they were the police and i needed to take my own advice.... Squeezebox is right - the key is the Mib untraced driver's scheme but there must be an injury and there has to be evidence to support the fact that your collision occurred as the result of a diesel spill.

that said you don't need to identify the lorry or the company concerned and it does not matter whether you were in proximity to a place with an hGV operator's licence - although it obviously helps....

i bought an ipod case described as being made from leather, but it stank of plastic, and did not feel right. how can i find out? is there a trading standards office where i can send it? (i don't need it back. but if it is fake, it'd be nice for them to be visited by legal people.) Read more

scratch the inside with something, eg fingernail, leather will "rough up" when scratched against the grain, plastic won`t.

hi, was interested to know peoples thoughts on the following.

out of interest the other day i put a police cars registration into compare the market but the system did not recognise that the car existed. checked also on ebay (when you search fo tyres) but no luck.

any ideas why the DVLa would not supply this data for insurances, how the police register their cars?

also most police service vehicles are Mot exempt due to the stricter maintenance regime.
