Just out of curiosity, can two or more individual sets of SPECS-controlled speed limits be linked together over much larger distances?
e.g. if there are two 50mph 'stretches' on a motorway, can the last camera of the first stretch be linked to the first camera of the second stretch to flag up an average speed of greater than 70mph? Read more
No doubt it will come eventually. SPECS has already proven how it smooths traffic flow, accidents within SPECS zone roadworks have gone down and/or been dramatically decreased. There were some statistics/document to back this up but I don't have the link now.
Britain's motorways could slowly become moving traffic convoys!...
I'm considering buying a second hand Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0TDCi from 2007 with around 80,000 miles on the clock. Reading up about it it seems some people have been running into dualmass flywheel and clutch failures around the 80-100K mark, with a hefty £1000+ bill.
Can anyone tell me if this is a common failure for the later 2000-07 Mondeo Estates or was it more on the earlier cars in the 2000-07 range? Hoping the latter obviously. If I buy this car should I expect a flywheel and clutch failure in the near enough future?... Read more
Ok thanks, that actually helps a lot!
I have just had my car delivered back from a Mazda dealer who was doing some warranty work and as the driver gave me the keys back i noticed a 12inch mark on my back bumper damaged down to black plastic, nobody was going to tell me about it, I had washed and polished the car the previous afternoon so i know it wasnt there when they picked it up. Spoken to service manager was gave me a story about checking for damage etc and doubts thay have done it but nobody checked when it was picked up and they didn't give me a sheet showing previous damage as they usually do. They said that it will need half of the bumper spraying and they will pay half of the bill. I don't see why i should pay anything as they damaged it and it will need a full bumper respray as half a spray job will look a mess. Has anybody any idea what my next move should be or anybody else had the same problem. Read more
a friend of mine had a sunshine roof fitted to his newish metro many moons ago. When he went to collect the car he found a cigarette burn on one of the seats which nobody would own up to, so he took small claims action and won his case.

I was wondering if other diesel drivers have noticed that after a service the fuel economy takes a hit.
I would imagine that the oil has better lubriacting properties after it has carbonised a bit and that the new fuel filter would have an initial bit of resistance to fuel flow.... Read more
You will probably find they have adjusted the handbrake and it is binding slightly.
I recently caught up with someone I worked with back in the nineties. They are now two years off collecting the state pension. as their money purchase scheme has performed appallingly things are going to be tight. although he now has a reliable small Japanese car it does not appeal long term and having suffered numerous problems with more recent European models he has decided to go for a classic car for retirement. Part of the idea is that maintenance will be far simpler. He has now brought a Saab 96 and stripped it down so that any rusty metal can be replaced before it is painted and rust proofed. all the mechanical bits will be either replaced or refurbished resulting in virtually a new car. Has anyone else done this or have any thoughts on it?... Read more
I bought a 22 year old E class in January - I can identify everything under the bonnet, and there is room to get to everything. Best of all I get 29mpg from a 22 year old 3 litre auto that doesn't burn a drop of oil.
I've got a long list of things I want to start fettling... just waiting for a dry Sunday ;)...
Recently bought a Carina E from a friends Dad, it's been serviced each year at Toyota, but I'm not prepared to pay their prices and will do stuff I can do myself ie. oil changes etc.
The manual states oil can be 15/40, 10/40 or even 20/50, all mineral type, and I believe it's filled with 15/40 at present. The Toyota invoice only says 'engine oil' so no help there.... Read more
Hi,
as I work for Unipart, I have asked as to the make/ quality of said oil. It is manufactured by a company calle Fuchs. They supply mostly OE and any new Ford you buy has Fuchs oil in it. as you would imagine, Ford would not use inferior oil and I am reassured it is top quality and one of the best in the market....

I particularly enjoyed the one with the Kangoo Express Maxi Combi. It's a pity that the version with back windows isn't likely to come to the UK. ah well, I guess they wouldn't sell many here. Read more

Hi Im back after 18 months absence and will shortly re-inherit the PUG 306 I built up and it has issues. Apart from number one son driving into a river in Queensland and filling the motor full of water he has had the spare fuel injector pump fitted, bent rims, had serious fuel problems etc and I am about to get the car back.
My first concern is to find out why the fuel bowl has to be used to pump the fuel up after standing overnight. I guess its draining back or that the fuel system has air leaks.... Read more
How long does the smoking last ? diesels of some age will almost always smoke on initial start from cold, this is due to unburnt fuel accumulating in the cylinders, this smoke would usually be a light bluish grey. Overfueling would result in black smoke when running at full throttle. Does it drive OK once started?
Have you checked the inertia switch, hidden directly behind the centre console? Gives the same symptoms. If you have been crashing about fitting a clutch it may have tripped.
