Hey all, glad to see honest john is back on it's feet!
I need to ask the question of whom thinks the handbook should be changed for the following reason.... Read more
I took my car in for a 3 year service and MOT to a Ford main dealer. They tell me that in the course of taking off one of the rear wheels to replace the brake pads they stripped one of the 5 wheel studs.
Apparently the wheel studs are integral to the hub and therefore they want to charge me for a new hub. With parts and labour that'll be £289.60 thank you very much.... Read more
i think you need to be firm with the garage and tell them that as they stripped the wheel stud (by their own admission) then they are responsible for the repair.
if they refuse then i strongly suggest you threaten them with trading standards. i dare say it was done by some monkey with an air wrench.
hope this helps

In the cbc breakdown for the landcruiser it says:
"May 06 Landcruiser LC5 D-4D auto had all 4 injectors replaced in March 2008 to resolve a vibration / judder through the car when held stationary in drive in cold weather. This problem has re-occurred and Toyota are not sure what it is and want the care for several days to test. "... Read more
Sorry, only just read this, we had the same issue, loads of vibration, even in neutral, warm or cold.

Hi,
My wife has a 2004 X3 and wants to add a towbar to it. It's rated to pull 2000Kg and the horsebox with horse will be about 1600Kg so it should be ok. There are lots of companies offering it and they all seem straight forward enough. I thought I would call BMW to check that a towbar wouldn't interfere with the parking sensors and just to check that adding a towbar is ok. They said it needs an up-rated cooling fan and want to charge me £1,900 to fit a towbar and a cooling fan. Why does nobody else mention this? Am I being led up the garden path here? I would have expected the braked towing figure to be pull'able by the car as described in the manual without any changes.... Read more
There are plenty of independent towbar firms around.I went to a local firm in Chesterfield and got a Westfalia detachable supplied and fitted very tidily to my Skoda. About £370 all in.

Franchised dealers are notoriously inconsistent in their advice (and prices) for after-market towbars. I suggest you look for your nearest towing specialist, preferably a member of NTTA (easy to find by Googling). Regarding the rear parking sensors, the trailer will probably interfere if you have a cheap universal wiring kit fitted. The towbar itself shouldn't be detected, but you'll get an annoying continuous tone whenever you select reverse. Better, therefore, to pay a bit more for a vehicle-specific wiring kit, preferably BMW original equipment, and it will probably need to be coded into the ECU too. This way, your X3 will 'know' when it is towing and the sensors will be inactivated. There may be other safety-related features too, such as TSP, which will only work if you have an approved wiring kit and recode. Either your BM dealer or a specialist towing centre will be able to do this.
Like you, I'd be surprised if an uprated fan is needed.
The audio system on my car (2 years old) is good apart from a poor tuner. When the TA button is pressed, there are frequent drop-outs as well as traffic announcements. Now, I get the drop-outs but no announcements. (The drop-outs can be stopped by switching out of TA). No amount of fiddling with the controls helps. What is likely to be wrong please? Read more
The Clarion as fitted to my truck does exactly this, i don't bother with the TA and tbh i never put the two together, though could be connected.
I wondered if the drop outs...3or4 seconds are when the radio decides to find a stronger signal, the Pioneer in my car never misses a beat (groan) by comparison....
I have a request for Honest John forum.

How many people here use their car mainly for business & couldn't care less about their wheels, & how many here are passionate about their cars and use them mainly for play? Read more
I agree, does there have to be one or the other? cant it be both a car for play and a car for business? I dont get what the issue is ? As I like fun more than work I prefer a car for play.
I too get to drive more in my job and I love it!

you may have seen my other entry under Nitrox's thread. I think there is a chance we could all work together here. Would you be prepared to ask your legal people if it would help your case if as many of us who have had simlar problems got together and added our weight to your argument? A Class Action of sorts.
I'd be more than happy to help out and I have a pretty good log of all my problems and Mazda's responses (or lack of)
