Yes id agree with you they may be cheap pads sligtly smaller were they sit in the brake pad carrier and as you say rattle.

But with brake off and wheel off you should be able to make them move if this is the case try using a screwdriver to prise them....

Hey guys,

I've got a '99 1.9TDI Passat with Climate Control, with a strange fault. Everything is fine with the temperature on low, but as soon as i change it to any kind of heat, i get a vapour and that 'hot water' smell come through the windscreen vent. Although the temperature gauge doesn't work, the cars not over heating, as i drove it 200 miles yesterday with no problem.

Any suggestions as to what it could be?

Many thanks in advance,... Read more

I've already had some work done on it by my loving boyfriend. He's lowered the suspension, painted the brake callipers red, fitted flared wheel arches to accommodate the wider alloys, tinted the windows, a full colour coded body kit that matches the custom paint job, HID bulbs, and smoked rear light lenses, a tuned 2.0 turbo engine with dump valve and big bore exhaust. On the inside it has a full leather interior, LED lights illuminating the footwells, along with £4000 worth of stereo, amplifiers and speakers. Not to mention having more buttons on the dash than a Spaceship.

As you can probably tell, I love my car and am very passionate about it. I also love its performance and love nothing better than leaving some chav standing at the lights in his Focus while I tear off into the distance. This is definitely a car for playing in.... Read more

Hi Lucy - I do apologise if you find some of the comments unwelcoming. It's all good-natured really and some of the guys tend to be a little more vociferous when a lady posts on here (unfortunately only a minority are ladies). Don't take it to heart.

I'd have thought you've probably done enough to your 306 - it sounds suitably individual already Maybe aim for somethng with 6 or 8 cylinders, but in a bigger car designed for a big engine....

Is it just me or is this site not what it was?

Not many of the regular posters pre the changeover seem to be in touch. Inevitable, I suppose, bearing in mind that the site was, effectively, off air for a month.... Read more

Hi

This morning I noticed that the CV joint gaiter had split with grease pouring out everywhere. I'm at the stage of trying to get the driveshaft out of the CV but there is a circlip which needs to be expanded. Unfortunately, a small piece of the circlip broke meaning there is now only one lug making it impossible to expand the circlip. Does anybody have any ideas about what I should do next?... Read more

Use circlip pliers and you should still be able to undo the clip with them.

If not 2x screwdrivers will do it but you will need another pair of hands to knock off the cv jopint.

Hi fellow spanner men,

I have been offered a 406 hdi which has had a slight front end shunt. I am happy to fix the bumper etc but it has STOP in big letters on the dash display. I am told this could be because its low on brake fluid but my instinct tells me its more to do with the accident. Can somebody tell me what triggers this STOP message please ? (And hopefully how to cure it.) The airbags are intact.... Read more

Thanks Big John - I like a challenge but I think I will give it a miss - the 406 can present enough problems without buying one which already has them. Cheers. Mike

2005 X-Trail, recently had an MOT and a service at the usual main dealer. On collecting the car was advised that after a test drive it was the opinion of the mechanic that the rear shocks were getting weak. Of note, this did not appear on any paperwork as an advisory and the car passed the MOT perfectly OK. Price quoted for two replacement shocks plus fitting was in the order of £650 which I though was quite steep. Inspected the shocks, no oil leaking and passes the Q&D bounce test correctly.

The fact that the didn't put it in writing makes me think the same.

I am having a problem with my accelarator pedal. The pedal seems to go down by itself and the revs rise even when I am not putting pressure on. the only way to stop it happening is to jab the acc pedal quickly. I've sprayed throttle body on it and pivot on pedal, any other ideas. Also the fuel injection light comes comes on every now and again any ideas about this as well. Thanks Read more

OK, so now you've got that - the Aston Martin DB 9 is hissing and clicking away to itself as it cools down after a blast along the local B roads. The genuine AC Cobra 427 sits patiently for an airing - you might take it out tomorrow.... Read more

Dolomite Sprint. Once describe by George Bishop (of blessed memory) as the car to drive whilst wearing a bow tie.

I have a secret love of small, discreet quick saloons. Give me a Fiat 128 with a 2.0 engine and I would be very happy.
