"Maybe as someone who reads more than I post I am missing the point of why a new site has been formed"
I think that you may be using the phrase "new site" to mean something different from the OP. I think that the OP was speaking of this site, i.e. HJ in its new incarnation, whereas you are speaking of a site that has come into being in the last month where many former Back Roomers are now posting.
If you do, indeed, refer to this site, the answer is that it was felt that in its old incarnation it would not be able to cope with the volume of site travel. If you refer to the site that has come into being elsewhere, you would probably be better asking your question there than here.

|
I'd certainly agree that this new version loads up quicker, and I notice the thread titles are less squashed together and so are easier to read through.
The only thing I don't like is that now the "new posts since last visit" icon doesn't show up unless I log in first. Previously it would appear just by visiting the site. But that is a minor point.
|
|
Ah... errr... and I have just discovered that if I post a message, then return to the discussion menu, all the little red "new" icons have vanished from every other thread that I haven't checked yet!
Now that, methinks, is not good...
|
|
Very user unfriendly using Chrome.. have to log in every time to see NEW posts.

There is already another thread about the log in issue here :-

Maybe as someone who reads more than I post I am missing the point of why a new site has been formed. I feel that the car buying world is a better place since Honest John came onto our screens.
Alan.
Sorry, I was not refering to Honest John's site, given that the other one has such a strong resemblence to this one I was just wondering why it was created.
Alan.

The other site you refer to has nothing to do with this one. Other forums can start up if they want and nobody can stop that. There is no connection to this site and the other one you refer to.

Morning all,
Somebody seems to be conspicuous by their absence, have we lost our leader,HJ himself?
|

a handful of threads I posted from the Far east now seem missing!

"a handful of threads I posted from the Far east now seem missing!"
What was there Subjects? Did you notice if anyone responded to them?

Boris, Not sure if anyone responded as I`ve just returned from a 27hr transit to the UK.
One was about `smoke, soot, raw sinuses and black headlinings` (something like that) and the post went on to say what a shock it is to be immersed back in it and with the DPF being seen in a positive light, following the experience. Something like that.
With reference to HJ "stop moaning" I had been putting effort into posts - supporting HJ and the forum following the problems. Not to worry though ;-)
I was more interested in if i had been severely censured for some reason.
|
|
I've had a look through disscussion since the site went live again, no sign of it, its not hidden, have queried with the other Mods.

I read your posts and they have indeed vanished. They're not hidden so someone must have deleted them (other mods and HJ Publishing please comment).
Your efforts appreciated by some.
|
|
Certainly not deleted by me - a confirmed Oilrag fan. Thank you for being polite about it!
We will shortly have a system which enables an automatic E-mail to be sent if a post is moved or deleted: meanwhile as HJ says above, do let us know if any unexplained problems happen. If it's any comfort, I find computer technology as irritating as everyone else!

I only ever hide posts because it gives the other mods an audit trail to follow. apologies to oilrag - there have been a few wind-ups and fake posters since relaunch - sadly it's possible that someone was a bit too quick with the red pen.

any chance of putting them up again oily... i missed them!!

I decided to take a quick look back here yesterday. What a disappointment. Even the functionality is all to pieces. Can't even switch from discussion to technical without going round the houses twice.
So where are all the exciting new features like easy picture posting, etc, promised before the forum went belly-up?
Hardly surprising, i suppose. When extravagant promises of a better future were bandied about before disaster struck, I spotted the word 'Windows'.

It's more of the same, really. A bit amateurish compared with those other forums (fora) out there which seemingly only have to go down for a few hours to update but never a fortnight, especially as there is now little improvement to show for it.
Fortunately, I don't post that often, although occasionally come here to see what's new. However nothing, obviously!

"Even the functionality is all to pieces. "
Well, at least the capitalisation bug has been sorted out. aT leasT i hope iT hAs.
I must confess that one thing that still annoys me is not being able to click on Back Roomer's names and see their profiles - or, for those whose profiles are hidden - their recent posts. This has to be one of the few fora which doesn't allow one to do that.
I also miss not being able to see at a glance how many posts there have been today.
But no doubt these things will soon be remedied.
|
|
Its definetly not as good as it used to be
- Increase in spam/troll (or whatever its called) posts
- Increase in posts plugging something
- The layout/format of the forum was much better before
- but i do like these bullet point things

Yes, this is a bit of a nuisance. Two of my posts have been removed or hidden over the past few days, and I have not been able to access my own recent history, etc, to find any clues as to why.
I am sure things will be back to normal soon.

Were your missing posts on this thread or another?
|

Moving from Technical to Discussion is simple if you put an icon for each on your bookmarks toolbar - assuming you are using Firefox.
|
|
I used to love this site, it was my first choice when firing up my computer.
Now it is a load of rubbish, I cannot understand why this has happened. For goodness sake tell us why you have knackered up a previously brilliant site.
|
|
Agree - the site is not what it used to be. My middle finger gets cramp doing so much scrolling. Can we not get rid of the double spaving?

My bookmarks toolbar is valuable real estate.
|
|
If you click on Backroom at the top of the screen you can see the menu and move to another section.
I haven't noticed an increase in spam, self-promotion etc but there are inevitably chancers that come along, and threads like that are dealt with promptly.
Constructive comments and suggestions welcomed - (E-mail to webmaster@honestjohn.co.uk). Quizman, we could help if your comment were more specific.

Were your missing posts on this thread or another?
They were not on this thread; one was a financial question, the other a response to a new poster.
I was not particularly bothered about their disappearance, but did wonder why access was no longer available to my recent history.
General feedback form sent off on Monday.

"any chance of putting them up again oily... i missed them!!"
Wish my memory was that good!
There were several posts though, that I put quite a bit of effort into with a mobile phone, while abroad.
Thanks for the kind comments anyway guy`s, regarding the drivel that I sometimes post ;-)

I can't post to this site from home (Mac, running Safari)* but can from work (clapped out something-or-other running IE6). Could this be why a lot of posters have seemingly disappeared?
*If anyone's interested when I click the "Post Message" button I just get returned to a blank message form. Very frustrating.
|
|
Have no trouble posting using Safari either on my Mac or using Windows version. Indeed this post is using Safari on windows. Have also tried Firefox, IE8, Opera and Chrome all of which seem fine.
|
|
I've been carrying out some testing, and believe it's a problem only on version 3 of Safari (Mac). If you download v4 you should be fine.
|
|
That would make sense as I am running v4
|

I hope all forum providers can learn some vital lessons from this saga:
1) Never ever close a forum for more than 24 hours. After that point, irritaion begins to set in, and people drift away.
2) Never blame your problems on providers, hosters, software, etc as if that is an excuse.
3)Never ditch a working forum until you have a new one up and running, and can then do an instant transfer.
|
|
There is a wealth of knowledge on this forum, however, of the fora I frequent this is:
the least easy to use.
It is always slow to load up
You can't post pictures,
No avatars, not that I have figure how to post them
No signitures
No banter
Too heavily moderated
Out of ten, I give it 5

the least easy to use.
I've no serious problems, but see my comments above.
It is always slow to load up
I don't usually find it too slow.
You can't post pictures,
Not a problem - I simply post them on photobucket and post a link.
No avatars, not that I have figure how to post them
I thought that was a good thing!
No signatures
Why is that a problem?
No banter
On the contrary, there is banter. And the banter on some fora is irritating.
Too heavily moderated
I disagree. While I might not agree with every decision taken by moderators, I believe that this forum, taken over the past few years, is the probably the best moderated forum I've frequented.

Thank you very much, Tyro. Sorry it's taken time to get the bugs ironed out, but we're nearly there, and can move on to constructive suggestions such as yours above.

Thank you very much, Tyro.
Well, I was actually thinking of DD, PU, rtj70 and the other veterans. Of course I'm sure you'll do a grand job, too!
Whoops. Slipping into banter. Slapped hand.

No avatars, no signatures, no twee mottos, no quotes from obscure writers - surely they are plus factors
