Secret motoring desires.... - Sofa Spud

We've had threads about people's dream fleet, or fantasy garage.

OK, so now you've got that - the Aston Martin DB 9 is hissing and clicking away to itself as it cools down after a blast along the local B roads. The genuine AC Cobra 427 sits patiently for an airing - you might take it out tomorrow.

But suddenly you have a hankering for a frivolous car, something quirky or minimal - something you've always had a desire to own but wouldn't want to drive every day (well, you probably wouldn't want to drive a Cobra 427 every day, but you know what I mean)

What is your secret motoring desire, one that might make your petrolhead friends think you're crazy?

Mine is to own a Reliant Robin.

Rover SD1.........but why is this my desire? Oh why.....

I've always hankered after a Jag mk X or 420G...everyone else thinks i'm mad, because of the size and the fact they're not quick or deemed desirable. Wouldn't stop me having one though, although the garage would have to be enormous.

i had the luck when i was a teenager to work for a local man who repaired jags of all sorts, and i had the job as well as helping him out on engine rebuilds etc, of test driving them when they were repaired, i drove a 420g, a mark 10, 420, mark2, and the best one of all an e-type series one, ah happy days

For years I hankered after a Triumph Vitesse 2.0 convertible....but when I eventually could afford one I thought - this is silly: I'm no mechanic and I'd be forever throwing money at it in repairs.

Hence the Z3 - also a straight-six (2.2), even more fun and (touching wood) so far very reliable.

Most of my motoring fantasies revolve around one of 3 things: nostalgia, Q cars, and Berlingos.

Examples of nostalgia vehicles that I've fancied owning include a Riley Elf and an Austin Cambridge A60 estate - the "Countryman" as it was called.

At the moment, my fantasy is a Q-Berlingo - something that looks just like an ordinary Berlingo, but has considerably more horsepower under the bonnet.

I'm still annoyed with meself for not realising one of mine.

About 2 years ago i was seriously considering getting rid of the MB coupe and upgrading to an E39 M5.

One of the last made came up at a BM dealer, one owner in Oxford Green with Tan leather/wood interior, most unusual as the majority of them are specced with sporty (apparently though do nowt for me) interiors and this was luxury spec more usual on a limo.

The price for this low mileage approved car was excellent reflecting things at the time and similar cars older than that are 2 to 3 grand dearer now and that spec combination almost unheard of.

Kicked meself a few times over that.

Not much else appeals to be honest, modern sporty stuff underwhelmes.

I sat in a 3.2l Porsche 911 and was driven twice expertly over the Quirang on the Isle of Skye. With the Windows wound down. Right car right road. If only I was a good driver and had the time and money to run something like that.

An enormous American convertible, with fins.

A Rover 75! Don't know why, but I was bored the other day and was looking for some that were up for sale and I found them to be quite alluring, the V8 version particularly appeals. I'm going to take my medicine and lie down now!!

"Something like this....."

Something like that, but a little bit more anonymous looking. That 2CV doesn't look like any 2CV I've ever seen!

Alfa Romeo SZ! It's hideous, but that special and beautiful kind of hideous!

I just could not resist mentioning my secret desire to own this version of the Fiat 500 Giardiniera.

It combines Fiat kitsch with features of "The Prisoner" and would be ideal for cruising along Sunderland's seafront. Oh, how the men with tatoos and fighting dogs would love it!

"A Rover 75! Don't know why.....I found them to be quite alluring."

Agreed in name, but mine would be a 1950 'Cyclops' Rover 75.

Agree about the 75, if they were still being made i'd have had (used) V8 on the drive by now.

regardless of engine the interiors were lovely, sort of old gentlemens club, quiet engines refined ride.

Damned greed and stupidity.

For me it would have to be a Series 3 Jaguar XJ12 - immaculate condition, in satin black.

I could even wear a long coat and pretend I was Edward Woodward... ahh... urm... enough said I, er, think... cough...

Vauxhall Viva HC - I really dont know why, I just would love one just like what Rodney Bowes "Bob" had sat on his drive way on "Whatever happened to the Likely Lads"

Shall I Get my coat?

Actually - I would also really, really like a silver Vauxhall Viscount - i think they are fantastic looking cars

I'd very cheerfully have another Mk II Polo Formule E. Mine was about 20 years old when I got it, but it was such fun. (And it shocked my friends...)

Secret motoring desires.... - Happy Blue!

Dolomite Sprint. Once describe by George Bishop (of blessed memory) as the car to drive whilst wearing a bow tie.

I have a secret love of small, discreet quick saloons. Give me a Fiat 128 with a 2.0 engine and I would be very happy.
