I put some new glow plugs in SWMBO's 1.5 Saxo on Sunday, as the old ones were on the way out. The car started ok then, but since it has been an absolute pig with clouds of white smoke billowing out. I wonder if I have been sent a set of dodgy plugs or perhaps the relay has gone, maybe on the way out and not up to the new plugs? All the connections seem clean and tight.
Any thoughts appreciated.

thanks in advance Read more
thanks alot steptoe,
itll be hard getting to it,
it is the tie rod that joins under the gaiter like you say in youre second thread
tommorow i will as you suggested move the steering to see f i can get the rack in a better position because at the moment there is no room for stilsons and laying under neath the car i am pretty restriced aswell ,
i may try drilling the old rod and getting a heavey stainless rod to see if i can knock it round with a heavy hammer
cheers for the advice
Going up north on a Sunday
Does anyone have any advice on whether it would be better to, when hitting the M40 after the A34, to go
M40 > A46 > M69 > M1
or
M40 > A43 > M1
or any other.......
also when going north of Leeds, would you advise sticking on the M1 or go M1 > M18 > A1
TIA Read more
thanks all.
will see how the traffic is on the M40. Never been on the M69 so might go that way and will stick to the M1 past Leeds.
I have a bizarre alarm system issue that is causing me to lose sleep until I get it sorted. With the car I have two instruction leaflets, one for a 99MY alarm system, and the other for a Sigma alarm system. I also have a sticker for a PIN code, but cannot find the keypad to enter it anywhere on the interior of the car (I've had the car 10 years - am sure I'd have found it by now). Car locks/unlocks on the keyfob and key, but indicators don't flash and the alarm goes off when I open the door. Car starts okay, but alarm is sounding which makes it impossible to go anywhere. Cannot turn off the alarm with the keyfob, or any way. HOW CAN I SHUT IT UP!!! AND HOW COME I CAN START THE ENGINE - SURELY IT SHOULD BE IMMOBILISED? Read more
Hi
What is the alarm light doing on the dash? Is it going out or still flashing with the ignition on? On the 99 the immobiliser is part of the key. If the light is going off then will need to see if it?s the factory alarm that is going off or the sigma add on.
Can anyone enlighten me as to how to replace the (Offside) Parking bulb in a VW Bora? It doesn't appear to be accessible ffrom the rear of the headlight as the other bulbs are! Read more
If it's anything like the Passat and other VAG cars, some plastic trim/pipes need to be removed before you can access the rear of the headlamp.
can a faulty dmf give me an intermittent clutch problem. HELP
{header made less vague - hopefully} Read more
well it is just that, drives fine. Then suddenley gearshift becomes increasingly tight, then impossible to move. Have to stop the car, engage gear, depress clutch and start. Sometimes its ok, sometimes its not. An intermittent clutch. Sometimes there, sometimes not. Last happened yesterday, not for 800 miles before that, then again today. Have had all the usual stuff done.
Fascinating article I came across recently - would make for a great range of "Top Trumps" cards for car mad schoolboys! tinyurl.com/5zusgz

I was in the Czech republic last year and the president went by me;I was about two feet away from him as the car stopped in front of me to let people pass in front of it(in the palace grounds);no police,no outriders-just him in the back of a Skoda.
Hi folks

I went tool-shopping for bush removal tools, but am bewildered by the choice. What's the best tool for removing the subframe bushes ? Will the following work ?
www.powertoolsuk.co.uk/webcat/details.asp?ProductC...4
I have the rear subframe completely removed from the car as I want to replace the 4 bushes as well as renew the control arms. The car was previously eating tyres and was not able to be aligned to within spec.
Thanks !

Thanks lads !
I like the idea of the DIY/threaded-rod tool. Must seek out some pics from the web of such a device. Sounds very simple in fact, but it's just that the subframe bushes are *massive* :)
The fan heater only blows cold air. I believe it could be a blocked valve in the matrix! Only problem is i dont know what matrix looks like or where matrix is located, nevermind the valves. Read more
I have to go to London tomorrow, to East Acton Tube Station.
I can't take the train all of the way from Tunbridge Wells as I have to go further north in the evening.
I was thinking of going to Heathrow, parking there and getting the tube in.
Does anyone have a more sensible solution? Read more
Ok, thanks for all your comments, some more sureal than others!
Having been stuck in the London underground today I refuse to do it again, it reminded me why I get a taxi after a commute on a train.
I had to wait for 3 tube trains this morning before I could squeeze on to one and had to almost fight my way off the platform tonight!
Then I had a wonderful 50 minute wait at the railway station with no public seating before I could get a train home. The train was packed and I bearly got a seat. Others were standing, which if they paid nearly £50 for their ticket, I guess they would be annoyed!
So after two days of using public transport to the full, I am going to treat myself tomorrow and drive in my nice comfy clean and odour free car for as much as I can, even if it only does 30 mpg and probably less inside the M25!

Glow plugs are a component which looks simple to make - and isn't. There are lots of plugs out there including those sold by a large high street spares retailer which are just not fit for purpose.
The Beru plugs for this engine have stainless bodies and a ballast resistor in the body of the plug with a temperature coefficient complimentary to the element. This gives a quick warm up and a relatively low steady state dissipation. They also have exceptional thermal cycling durability. (I have no connections with Beru but I used to test glowplugs and other automotive components).
Check the heavy ring tag connections under the controller when you get an opportunity - glad the problem is fixed.
