When I had a mid-life crisis to consider obtaining a bike licence, I was struck by how expensive even quite old models were.
Consider, for example, the following comparison:

Whilst I accept bikes have an outright performance advantage, they do this mainly because they weigh a darned sight less than a car. Their specific output in terms of BHP/litre is a bit higher, too - but it's still only piston and valve technology, not a fusion reactor on wheels.
Other than an engine, we have a bit of frame, a rudimentary seat, two wheels and some fancy graphics. You get a fair bit more for your money in the XJ.

hi i have a mondeo tdci 130 on a 53 plate with 104000 miles right the first problem is when i let off the accelarater then put it back down again it makes like a metally clnging noise and it does this also somtimes when i cahnge gear
the second problem is the steering wheel isent straight i have had it tracked and everything and the steering wheel still the same but when i do put it level it pulls to the right and also it can start to really pull to the left sometimes really hard and i have to use alot of force to keep it straight but it dosent do that all the time and is just generally abit twitchy on the road altogether
thanks Read more

Whilst the motoring link is perhaps a little thin, given the amazingly long threads here about policing, I thought any Backroomers who are not already aware of Inpector Gadget might find him interesting.
He's a serving police inspector (who remains currently anonymous) with a much visited blog, and he's just had a book published called "Perverting the Course of Justice".
I can assure you that unless you write it off as total fiction then your blood pressure will rise as you read it - but it does give some very detailed stories about the realities of policing in Britain today (and does include some talk about traffic fatalities etc, and why and how the police do what they do, hence the motoring link).
Much of it is very sobering, but some of it is amusing.
Very recommended. Read more
Thanks Dipstick - Ive had a quick look at it and it looks looks faintly amusing and has a small relevance here, so, for now, I will let the thread stand - but in view of the potential for non-motoring and/or police bashing I've locked this thread.
The query about Perodua in another thread led me to think about makes of cars which were only sold in this country for a few years.
Yugo and Moskvich spring immediately to mind.
I'm sure there will be others.
And is anyone still running one of these obsolete makes?

Mahindra "Jeep". Switchgear that wouldn't look out of place on those kiddie rides you see outside amusement arcades. Truly awful. I'd rather walk....
I'm looking for a car that I can keep probably for less than a year before upgrading to a more professional motor, would like something a little sporty but not ostentatious and around the £4000 mark. I have seen a 54 reg Astra coupe 1.8i (not convertible), metallic red with 31k on the clock.
The tag was £4695, I've effectively got that down to £4295 (£3600 with part ex of an old Almera SRi) which seems a little top heavy but the dealer wouldn't push any further. It has a few minor scuffs and chips to the paintwork but no obvious sign of significant damage, however the 17" alloys do show a few (albeit relatively minor) signs of curb damage. The interior looks well cared for and it has a full service history, no receipts for work done though.
Has anyone any experience of these (particularly servicing / reliability) and could let me know if this seems reasonable? Thanks in advance. Read more
Possibly a bit too old for you but Vauxhall's original press car tinyurl.com/5ld8fl now under £3K.
My Renault Scenic (Y reg/ 2001; 1.6L) has recently started to blow cold air on my feet. However, it blows hot air out of the other vents. The cold air seems to blow irrespective of the direction setting too. Any suggestions?

Only 12 months ago. What a sea change in attitude to a class of cars in such a short time.

It came out originally as 1.1 CVH quickly replaced by 1.1 OHV.
AFAIK there was always a 1.1 OHV, it was the 1.3 CVH which was replaced by OHV equivalent.
Now then guys, its been a while. Hope everyone is well...
I've recentley set up my own company (even in todays climate, i know!) and need a bigger car for carrying stock and commuting around 30 miles a day. I currently drive a 2004 Audi A3 2.0 tdi sport but i'm looking to change it for a Passat. I like the size of it, but i have just looked at the C-B-C Breakdown and its kinda put me off! I like the performance of the 2.0 but would like an auto as a luxury.
Could anyone shed any light on real life ownership on a day to day basis? I am looking at somethin with around 80k on it as it falls within budget. I know a number of you will reccommend the Mondeo right haha or have you guys gone off it? Not been on here in a while like i said...
Cheers in advance...

Is there any technique one can use to avoid this lag issue at roundabouts and
the like?
Yes - anticipation and learning how and when it changes gear.
In the very early days I got caught out a couple of times, especially in crawling traffic on the approach to roundabouts - as soon as you move off it will change into 2nd, even if you are barely rolling - to counterqact this I often slip it into S in queues as then it stays in 1st for longer. If it does this and then you get to the front of the queue and possibly slow slightly, when you want to go it may be between 1st and 2nd. You can control this by anticipating what is happening on the roundabout. If it looks like you can go don't slow and it will take off in 2nd. If you need to slow, ensure you do enough so it drops into 1st.
Like a manual you just need to adjust your driving to the way it changes gear and use your right foot to get it to change rather than the left foot, right foot, left hand combination.

Low mileages, only used in dry weather, better maintained, no bodywork to rot away.
