Winwynd

Hi, I am a newbie to the forum and was recommended by a work mate. The problem I am having is in three parts, and I am sorry if this is a bit long winded,
1. If I go out to my car in the morning it will start no bother, after running for any length of time if I stop the car and try to restart it say within half an hour or so it will not start. The engine turns over ok but does not catch. If I put my accelerator hard to the floor it will usually start, cough and splutter for a few secs than run ok.
However if after stopping the car and I leave it for a couple of hours it starts no problem.
2. While the car is running and I have to stop a lights or a junction and the car is in idle mode, the idle speed (900-1000rpm) sometimes is ok, sometimes jumps to 2000-2500 rpm and either stays there for a couple of secs or pulses up and down for a couple of secs.
3.When I go to pull away from said lights or junction sometimes car is ok, sometimes the car just seems to die and if I don?t get my clutch in fast enough, it stalls, then trouble starting again as in no1, if I do get the clutch in I rev a few times and car pulls away.
I had the car in my local garage who is usually pretty good, but he cannot get to the bottom of it., he has serviced the car changed spark plugs the ht leads and the last thing was he changed the exhaust return control valve, all to no avail.
I would be grateful if anyone with any help could give some advice.

Finding it wouldn't be the problem - checking it would. It's always best to check the readings from these things in live-data on a scanner. You local garage will likely have one.

is this a catagory 1 alarm - the standard fit alarm?

I'm asking as have got my mates new insurance policy and it states its an unspecified cat 1 alarm - so looking onto the internet and it says it is...

Does the insurance need to look at it or do I need to tell them over the phone to correct it?

Many thanks

If factory fit alarm and immobilser, then generally yes, it'll be cat 1 thatcham approved.

If immobiliser only, then generally cat 2.

See if it's in the following lists:

Toll charges are to be increased by up to 50% for the Dartford crossing over the Thames between Kent and Essex.
The new Dartford Tunnel and QEII bridge fees, which include free access between 2200 and 0600, will be officially introduced at 2200 GMT on Saturday.
Day-time crossings will rise from £1 to £1.50 for cars. Lorries will be charged £2 or £3.70, depending on their size.
However, local car drivers will be able to join a scheme for 50 free crossings and a 20p rate for subsequent uses.
The discount scheme is available to people who live within areas covered by Dartford and Thurrock councils.
'Dart-Tag'
Residents in Dartford and Thurrock, Essex, will get the free journeys after they pay a £10 registration fee for an electronic tag, known as a Dart-Tag, to display in their car's windscreen.
Other users of the Dart-Tag will be charged £1 for a crossing by car, £1.75 for two-axle goods vehicles or £3.20 for multi-axle goods vehicles.
A spokesperson for the AA said they were concerned the free access at night would add to congestion as drivers rushed to cross the Thames before 0600 GMT.
The toll was to end in 2003, by which time the bridge and tunnel had been paid for, but was kept on by the Department for Transport (DfT) as a congestion charge.
The DfT said an independent report in 2001 showed that without charges, traffic would increase by 17.1%.
More than 7,700 people have put their names to an online petition against all charges on the route on the Prime Minister's website.

I have never read so much tripe. This kind of merde is insutling to a normal persons intelegence - If the powers that be could just tell the truth they might earn a bit of respect instead of the contempt that we are starting to hold them in.

Whats wrong with "Yes the crossing is now paid for, but as you have no other crossing to use we are going to keep the toll to pay for its maintenance and make a profit"

See simple honest and trustworthy.

Is there anything for, or against, putting (central heating) inhibitor in car cooling systems (of various ages)? This a result of the CH "sludge" thread. Read more

No need. Corrosion inhibition is a key function of anti freeze. It may even react unfavourably with another addition.

On 3 or 4 occasions the power steering has packed up and the EPS light on instrument panel illuminates on my 54 reg Meriva. This happens whilst driving and there are no indications that it is about to happen, it happened today on a busy roundabout. On a previous occasion I took it to a main dealer with the power steering gone and EPS illuminated. Their answer was no fault found. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, any solutions, please.

first check is to make sure that the battery and the charging cicuit ie Alternator is in tip top condition and its chargeing, after that its of to the garage that can read any codes stored, if the light has been on then a code will be stored the eps are a little prone to failing on these and corsa's but normally in one direction only see hear

As many who have been following the Old CAR Magazine thread will know a lot of us have been getting nostalgic about the cars of the late 70s and early 80s that were lauded by this once venerable pubication. I have bought some old copies of CAR and three cars have seriously tempted me into looking Europe wide for a good example:

The FIAT 127 and FIAT 128 ( fantastic Lampredi designed OHC engine)
Citroen GS (svelte comfortable and terrific revvy air cooled flat four engine)
Alfa Sud 1200 TI ( still reckoned by many today as one of the most finely balanced front drivers ever made).

All despite having fantastic engineering were built from useless recyled steel and rusted away over here. However do cherished cars still exist in the south of Italy and France, where is the best place to look and are pristine examples of such cars expensive? I remember them all as great little cars as a kid and the Alfas and FIATs used to sound brilliant when driven "con brio" as they usually were. Read more

Just wondering why the owner of that FIAT 127 laid it up for 30 years instead of selling it or driving it. I note it was a competition prize.

Hi

I am going to view a Peugeot 206 1.4 2000 V reg tomorrow. Mot till July 09 and Tax till June 09. It's got 91,000 miles on the clock and is priced at £1100. Do you think this is a fair price? I just wanted some advice on things I should look out for / typical things that can go wrong on a 206. Also do you think this is high mileage?

Any comments gratefully received. Read more

Can't say anything specifically about the 1.4 engine as I owned a 1.6 but usual checks should apply.
Check the condition of all the fluids and check any available paperwork which tells you when things like the engine oil and filter were last changed. Ask if the cambelt has been changed. If it was done by Peugeot there will be a sticker on the belt casing or panel at the front of the engine above the radiator saying when it needs changing again.

Check under the car at the rear for rust in the floor above where the rear wheel is stored and check the condition of the spare wheel and hanger while you are under there.

The bodywork can be described as fragile and easily dented in supermarket car parks by other people opening their doors onto it.

Check all the electrics work inside the car. I wouldn't expect too many problems but better someone else pays for repair, if required, than you.

Check out the "Car-by-car" section at the top of this page.

My car was great for the almost three years I had it. Took it from 27k to 72k miles, the only extra expense over and above standard servicing was front brake discs and pads at 60k miles, front tyres at roughly the same and exhaust.

I need to change the address on my driving licence. The Photocard expires in less than a year so I thought it might be worth updating the photo at the same time. On the DVLA website it says 'you can update the photo at any time'. If I update the photo now will they add 10 years on from the expiry date, will it run from when I update the photo, or will it still expire on the original date? Read more
