I've been a great fan of theirs, but their number is up. The boat was arrested by the French last week due to unpaid bills, and rumours are that they also owed Port of Dover money.

Anyway, they are now in administration. www.speedferries.com/

Amongst other stuff, it says "The Administrators are currently exploring the option of selling the business as a going concern.". So maybe the 8 tickets I have still to use will get used. If it goes bust, the credit card company will stump up I suppose.

"Fight The Pirates" was their motto. They came along a while after I finished working at P&O in Dover. There is no doubt that channel crossing has become cheaper, whether it was Speedferries doing or other factors I don't know.

Speedferries have given up looking for a buyer and is yet another company to the wall. While their service wasn't top flight, they scored heavily with me on price and convenience. Shame.

I bought ten tickets earlier this year, six still valid. Glad I paid by credit card! :-)

FSA have concluded a review and noted some issues which need resolving to ensure comparison websites achieve their aim.

Excesses need to be explained
Too much emphasis on just comparing prices - users must be advised that other factors should also be compared
Some info was out of date on the sites leading to price differences when choosing an insurer.
Data from the comparison may not be transferred correctly to the insurance company

So use them, but always double check everything before entering into a contract.

When I took out insurance for the home with Tesco I needed to check about the no claim because there was no mention. I think they told me no more than 2 in a couple of years though not one in 12 months.

The deal I got with Tesco was nearly half of what I was paying before and more cover (e.g. accidental damage) because they had an offer.

Until yesterday I was looking forward to delivery of the new Jazz this Saturday. Until yesterday I would have recommended my local Honda dealer to anyone. Then I got the call......

Basically the ordered car has simply disappeared and they can't now get me the car until January "at best". Another colour "maybe in December". No "sorry we screwed up", no "what can we do to sort this out?" just a blind assumption that I would accept the situation.

Honda customer services simply not interested, dealer principal similarly disinterested.

At a guess someone else wanted the car and there was more profit in that deal, or am I just being cynical?

Order cancelled, deposit returned, Honda struck from companies I'll do business with.

I think someone brighter than me once said it takes a lifetime to keep a customer and a second to lose one. Probably doesn't mean a thing to my local dealer or the Honda ivory tower. Read more

Yep spot on, and the fact that they were willing to risk the 4 or 5 new cars a year that I buy for my company makes them..... (fill in the blanks).

I quite understand HJ's point that they screwed up and there was no way to get me a car but it was the WAY they screwed up.

I rarely rent cars in the UK; the last time was this summer when SWMBO rented a Ka from Enterprise in London for a few days and who were very competitive. As many of you will have realised, I have a holiday flat in Israel and travel there several times each year, usually renting a car on at least six occasions each year from as little as three days to as much as three weeks.

For a variety of reasons I always took a taxi from the airport and rented a car from a small local company who had very good prices and were very helpful, but their range of cars was limited and with three growing and argumentative children I wanted cars that they did not have (e.g. small seven seater like a Kia Carens). Also, the cost of the taxi was more than a day?s car rental, so it made sense to rent a more suitable car from the airport when we arrive.

So there are six companies with offices at the airport; five international companies and one large local company. Generally their prices are within 10% of each other so for several trips I have simply gone online a couple of weeks beforehand and spent ten minutes finding the best price and booking it. Earlier this year Avis were particularly good value, but are now back in line with the rest.

I thought I would have a go at some of the rental brokers like holidayautos.co.uk and was very surprised to find that they were a lot cheaper, sometimes by up to 40%. I have used them three times so far (the car is actually rented from Sixt), but was advised for my next trip at Christmas to visit carrentals.co.uk. This can be a confusing site at first, but eventually I worked out how it works (it searches brokers as well as the main rental companies) and found a deal through Easycar and have a deal with Budget again at some substantial discount to the main websites. Now I thought that Easycar were a broker also so I tried the Easycar website without clicking through from carrentals.co.uk. The price difference was surprising, with the click through page being about 10% cheaper than the direct page.

So what is going on? How do car rental companies operate so that the more people you broker through, the cheaper it becomes?

Kfar Blum - Been there a few times for kayaking down the River Jordan with the kids and SWMBO goes to Naot Mordechai for the Naot shoes. Lovely part of the world.

Let me know when you are near North Manchester - we'll have a chat. My profile hopefully has my contact details.

With an increase in visiting traffic to the forum over the past few months, this has caused extra workload for the current moderators and it has got to the point where we now need a helping hand.

No longer being able to tempt someone with an edit button (as you've all got one now) we had to resort to other methods of bribery by offering them a few other buttons instead. We tried some chocolate ones, but that didn't work. Neither did the silver foil wrapped ones that we swiped from HJ's Christmas tree last year. In the end we had to resort to offering a move, delete, and an unlimited time period edit button. Fortunately that did the trick and he said yes.

Anyway enough of me waffling on. I'm sure you'll join me in welcoming rtj70 to the dark side, and will all want to pass on your messages of support to him.

Please can you help. All lights appear to be working OK, however-when indicating the rear lights (both) start to flash as oppposed to a single indicator. But the front and side lights are fine.

Watching that TV ad whereby the chap is killed not by the accident as such, but by his internal organs "continuing on their journey", it struck me what a load of tosh that is! (imho!). Whether the "bodies" momentum is abruptly terminated by the front of vehicle, airbag, or seatbelt, the "internals" are still going to continue moving to some degree, and will still be liable to serious life-threatening damage anyway, whether a belt is worn or not. (At this point i stress that yes, I know seatbelts do save lives), but my point being is that the advert is mis-leading.
Which leads me to ask, why are air-bags designed to soften impact once the "body" has gained momentum, as opposed to being designed to inflate and push/cushion the person firmly in the seat cocoon-like, thereby helping prevent momentum occurring in the first place?

"doctorchris and qxman; Big Bad Dave seems to disagree see:" >> what a tittle tattle >>

When on the one hand you say
"I hate the current seat belt advert. ... Total crap."
and yorkiebar says: "The advert is wrong!"

and on the other hand doctorchris, qxman, and moonshine say something like:
"Doctorchris - I think you have the correct answer and that the advert is also correct."
"The advert is correct and well done"

then I think it is worth discussing further to find near which end of the polarised statements the truth lies.

The Mazda 3 has auto called Activematic - is that a ordinary auto box or a variable rubber band thingy - if so has anyone heard of any problems with them. - SWMBO Yaris is due for a change and next car has to be hubby friendly and have auto-- also needs a bit more power than Yaris to tow a small trailer -- Other than the Mazda are there any other recommendations for a car of similar size and petrol is preferred fuel - will be looking for 1 or 2 yrs old car.-- Yaris should sell privately. Economy is poor for a 1.6 - best I've got is 38, lowest is 28 in pure city driving (sheffield - lots of hills). Tend to average 32 - 34 a bit shy of the official 35mpg. Facelifted version (post 06?) is slightly more economical - enough to knock the VED down a band, to E I think.

Great car but I'm fed up with continual windscreen misting. I dont want the aircon in winter (also fuel efficiency) as recommended. Anyone else experience this or is it peculiar to my car? Read more

There is loads about this on the main Nissan Qashqai forum but I've never had an issue with mine.

I just leave my Air con on auto for most of the time and it works fine albeit not as hot as my previous VW Passat.
