Does anyone know of the total number of jobs that are dependant on motor vehicles? Not just in manufacturing, but everything from servicing, making tax disc holders, valeting, and all the other countless industries and professions that would disappear if the car did.
I am trying to show an eco warrior that his assertion that motoring is subsidised to the tune of £1000 per annum per vehicle by taxpayers is a tad looney.

Just wondering if there are any other motorbikers out there?
If so, what do you ride?
I have a Kawasaki Ninja 650R and a Vespa 125. I use the Vespa for popping into towns and the 'other one' for a bit more extreme fun...
Do you think biking is still fun? I love it. Read more
Oh yes..............!!
Suzuki 1200 S Bandit (2004) - Japanese air/oil cooled 4 stroke, de-catted with an aftermarket exhaust, 110bhp, max torque at 4000 rpm, revs up to 11,000 rpm, 70mph @ 4000 rpm. 50mpg. Rather quick :)
MZ ETZ250 (1988) - old East German (DDR) filthy 2-stroke, no performance to speak of but costs nowt to run (annual service is a new spark plug, gearbox oil change and points check), 60mpg. and is now an appreciating assett!
Ride on...........
Website hasnt been updated for some time. Are they still importing to the UK? I thought the Myii would have been a bigger sales success with the current climate for fuel efficent petrol cars.

Shattering news......
Have a fluid leak in my engine bay, where pipes going into the top of black cylinder type object at front of engine bay, just under plastic engine cover. Fluid collects on the top of here and drips down the front onto the pipes at the front of the engine and onto the botton sill plate behind the radiator.
Could this be caused by a loose pipe, all seem very secure? or something else.
Sorry but i do not know what the bleck part is called - think it is oil that is leaking as it is slightly staining the ground whenever I do a liongish journey and park, doesn't seem to do it after a short journey so fluid temperatuire may have something to do with it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Read more
That sounds like the fuel filter. Probably needs replacing - they are plastic, and not really up to the fuel pressure....
Evening,
Taking my boys to school this morning, it came on the radio that around 20% of all children think their parents drive to fast.
So, I ask the question. "Do I drive to fast"? The answer was no from both of them so Im sitting there feeling quite good about it.
So, the second question then comes out "Do I drive to slow"? Yes was the answer.
I cant win, I'm only 44 surely I cant be too old yet. Can I?
I believe I'm a "normal" driver.

I remember when my kids were sub-teens we used to play a game where they
would tell me when to overtake I would perhaps decide not to and tell them
to count to 10 if anything came the other way during the counting we were
all dead! We 'died' a lot until they got the grasp of the principles involved!
That is such a good idea. Learning to overtake safely and also knowing when not to is actually quite a difficult concept to grasp safely and this seems a good way of learning without the nasty consequences of making the mistake properly.
OK, those looking for serious and informative motoring-related discussion can leave now. I was bored on the M40 the other day and got to thinking about rear wipers. When they became commonplace in the late 70s, most described an arc of 90 degrees or a little more. In the 80s and 90s, a few designs used a down-up sweep - parked in the vertical position - perhaps to make them less likely to get trapped by snow. Range Rovers had the pivot at the top. Big Toyota estates had two of the things. But the 90-degree sweep was pretty well universal.
These days, rear wipers all seem to be mounted centrally and to sweep almost 180 degrees - many leaving quite a lot of unswept muck at the edges and corners. Does anyone still fit an old-school 90-degree wiper to the back of a current car? Read more
My Hyundai coupe rear wiper parks parallel to the side of the hatch and wipes to 90°.
It also can wipe constantly or intermittently. Rarely need the wiper on in either mode after setting off and it makes a racket flapping in both directions.
SWMBO Getz has an almost 180° ,constant only, rear wiper and it also makes a horrible noise.Must get round to adjusting it.
Net result is much the same view out of the rear in both.
We have a kitchen floor covered in those terracotta tiles - 6"x 6" or so, which I think is called quarry slate - but I might be wrong...
We've tried all sorts to try and clean it properly, but with limited success. We've tried some of those cleaners - one's called "Glo" which seem to be designed for the surface, but they don't really clean it, and also the grouting/cement between the tiles.
Any suggestions?

220 Coupe. Dip beam is not working. Car has 60/55W H4 and 55W H1 bulbs fitted ie 2 main beams. Fuses and bulbs tested OK. Side lights and main beam working OK ( both main beams work in each headlight ). Continuity between dip beam bulb and fuses 10 & 11 (dip beam left & right ) is OK. Battery voltage measured when dip beam switch is on, between blue wire at switch and earth. No voltage measured at fuses 10 & 11 with switch on. Are there any relays for dip beam or is it controlled by Multi-function unit?
Thanks in anticipation. Read more
Screwloose,
Sorted. I got a relay from the breakers fitted it, normal service is resumed. The coil of the faulty relay was open cct.
Thanks again for your advice, very much appreciated.

Well title says it all.
I own a 1.6 club new shape Astra.
Nice car but very boring. it is worth a little under 6k.
I was thinking of part x it for a civic type r of a couple years older for around the same price.
My reasons are.
Petrol price dropping like a stone.
The u turn on the tax for at least a year (more than likely happening)
Want a car I can enjoy but still fairly sensible storage reasonable MPG?
So guys any pros and cons for my idea?
Your knowledge and advice would be greatly appreciated by someone who has sod all technical knowledge with cars just like them to be fast and fun.

If I'd be able to pay for the gas the Type R uses (and it uses a lot, believe me, K20's mpg depend on your RPM - the higher RPM, the lower mpg) I'd buy a Type R right now. I'm a VTEC fan, all those 8 - 9k motors that just scream are my favourites. A Type R with a sensible exhaust can show how a good straight-4 engine should sound..
in other words - buy the Type R, right now!
