With an increase in visiting traffic to the forum over the past few months, this has caused extra workload for the current moderators and it has got to the point where we now need a helping hand.
No longer being able to tempt someone with an edit button (as you've all got one now) we had to resort to other methods of bribery by offering them a few other buttons instead. We tried some chocolate ones, but that didn't work. Neither did the silver foil wrapped ones that we swiped from HJ's Christmas tree last year. In the end we had to resort to offering a move, delete, and an unlimited time period edit button. Fortunately that did the trick and he said yes.
Anyway enough of me waffling on. I'm sure you'll join me in welcoming rtj70 to the dark side, and will all want to pass on your messages of support to him.
DD, pp Smokie, PG, & PU.
ps, as with all new moderators, please be gentle with him for a day or two.

What - so he can be nasty to us later? Not a hope..

Passed over your application again did they AE?

Something along the lines of "your unique style may be too modern and light hearted for the more mature thinking of some of our contributers"
|
That's exactly what I thought. A waste of talent, that's what it is.
|
|
"too modern and light hearted for the more mature thinking of some of our contributors"
Other way round, surely.. :-)

|
Well done, rtj. Sounds like a thankless task to me, but I guess there must be fringe benefits.. :-)
|
Good for you, rtj70. It must be the car that you drive.
Clk Sec

Good luck rtj, I don't envy you - largely thankless task but a task that makes this forum a pleasure to use - thanks for taking it on.
Best wishes

Thanks for the encouraging words - I hope I don't regret it too much :-)

Good for you Rob, hope you enjoy it. Some of us can be very well behaved.....Sometimes I would quite like the power of the extra buttons without the responsibility though.......

Well done on your promotion rtj70.
Is the Vectra still the standard company car for mods?
|
No because I have a Mazda6 and before that a Mondeo TDCi :-) Recently my employer has even stopped us getting GM group cars including Vaxuhalls. Quite fancied an Insignia in a couple of years.
|
|
>>Nice one jbif. I wonder if they're looking for a new mod? ;>)
The above from yesterday's IHAQ.
I feel almost psychic!!!
Good luck rtj70 in dealing with us unruly mob.;>)

There was some behind the scenes chuckles about that - the smoke had been uttering from the BR stack for a few days !
Look forward to working with you Rob

Is it possible to put some markings eg. {m} besides members names to indicate the member is a moderator?
Earlier I used to think that members with {p} are moderators [p = police] :) Though I now know it means public profile.
|
I keep meaning to do this to my own profile. You've galvanized me into action !
|
There.

Please welcome our latest moderator - rtj70
Welcome rtj70!
Pugugly (Moderator) and Pugugly on the same thread! - that must mean you have two login IDs available. [Usually changing username results in all past instances of the name changing too, as has happened to "smokie".]

I know how to cheat the machine !

Usually, but not always, especially when some of us have extra buttons to play with.

Welcome! Some of the debates have got quite forceful recently so hope you have plenty of soothing balm to hand!
|
Moderator is a silly term. I always think "Prefect" would be more a suitable title.

Perish the thought, there were a couple of obnoxious ones at school and as for the head boy....aaaahhh!
Hope you won't be issuing too many PD's rtj70...(i wonder how many know, or was i a bad boy)

Prefect's Drubbings, Punishment Duties, Pupil Disgracings, Particularly Dreadful somethings........
Go on then ....what were they?

Prefect's Drubbings Punishment Duties Pupil Disgracings Particularly Dreadful somethings........
Prefect's Detention....issued for any reason 1 or 2 hours after school.
Infinitely preferable to MD (Master's Detention) which was 1 or 2 hours on Saturdays, i may have been a regular at MD in the dim and murky past.
I have a sneaky feeling that you may have been a regular for punishments too Humph.

Test: for other backroomers - sort out the real one from the fake double posting above.

Easy peasy - the one with the watermark is the genuine one.

All Moderators are equal, but DD is more equal than others!" ;-)

Might be.
That is deeply unfair........
Want one of those buttons though......
;-)
|
Good luck, rtj70! Moderating any forum is always a more difficult job than it appears, because if the job is done well most of the work is not noticed by others. But it's usually surprisingly rewarding, so I'm sure you'll get plenty of satisfaction out of it as well as doing an invaluable service for the backroom.
|
Oh for heaven's sake. Another arbitrary and demented censor is the last thing we need. Aren't there more than enough already?
And now they're all adopting the same name too. We trolls hate being on short commons. Prepare for trouble.
Er.... :o}

So the words "hard cash" were carefully avoided? ..:-)
Good luck to rtj70 - I'm sure he'll enjoy sorting out some of the more eccentric forum members - including me...

Good luck rtj70 from a newbie
I don't think I'm too eccentric....just a bit...different... or so the voices in my head tell me..... :-)

Good luck. With some of the contributions lately, I think you'll need it :)

As a recent contributor "over the past few months" , i would like to say that i joined this forum because of the sensible rules, the diversity of opinion, and the feeling that i was joining a group of mates "down the pub" ( "We disagree, but what do you want to drink?" ) This forum is, to my mind, the best motoring ( or even ANY ) forum on the web.
Betcha the job is harder than you thought, but good luck with it, ( and if you ever chop me i will send the boys round ! ( P.S. What's your address ? ? ? )
;)
|
|
I should like to add my congratulations.
One thing occurs to me, along with all the stuff in this thread about identities, nicknames etc., is whether "rtj70" is a bit... well, colourless. (Sorry if that seems insensitive; I'm sure you gave a lot of thought to it when you joined the Forum.)
How about a renaming with a nice strong pair of capital letters in the style of DD, PG and PU?
|
If I could have thought of a better name recently I would have. When I joined in 2003 I just used my initials and gave it little thought ;-) Now if only I could think of something more interesting.
Rob
|
|
"How about a renaming with a nice strong pair of capital letters in the style of DD, PG and PU? "
But all of them have a "proper" name, but are commonly known by an abbreviated version. I'm feeling left out!! :-)
|
Congratulations rtj - Rob!
I`m going to stop posting for a while to give you an easier start.
;)
|
|
|
ChrisPeugeot, I agree; in fact, anonymous, rather than merely colourless.
I have visions in my mind for many posters on this site; but rjt40 sounds a bit like a part number... It's a complete lack of observation on my part, but I note that he has made nearly 1,500 posts in the last twelve months, and another 2,000 in the years since September '03 but I don't recall having seen the name, ever.
Anyway, congratulations (or bad luck!) and moreover, thank you for the hard work you (all) (will) do here, keeping the site clean, tidy and safe!
|
It is anonymous and I guess that was one reason to go for it back then - so my employer doesn't spot I'm posting. 1500 posts in 12 months - blimey. Or was it lack of imagination.
I did think to change it before I was announced as a mod but that would have looked like a total unknown sneaking in to some. Now if I change it, with a thread named after me it might also look suspicious.
|
Now if I change it with a thread named after me it might also look suspicious.
Tsk! He's forgotten about his unlimited time period edit button already ;o)
|
|

easy: You could change it to something like [say] -
"Rob70 - (was rtj70)" for a few weeks, then drop the suffix "- (was rtj70)". Obviously choose whatever you feel happy with in place of Rob70.
|
|

|
Welcome rtj70. You realise you've just handed over a chunk of your life to a bunch of faceless troublemakers don't you? Good luck :-)
|
Welcome, and many thanks for agreeing to take on the job.
FWIW, I think a good colourless name like rtj70 is just what the place needs. If everyone had colourful and interesting names, the world would be such a boring place. :-)
|
It has just dawned on me what HJ must do to get these chaps to waste their time on all this carp of ours.
He hands over all the supercars and leather-upholstered uber-Euroboxes he can't be bothered to road test because what he really digs is mainstream motoring, with a practical emphasis. They take it in turns to swan about in Lamborghinis and RS6s and things for a week or so all expenses paid, with poncing privileges down the pub.
Don't expect the carphounds to admit it though.
|
these chaps to waste their time on all this carp
Sorry PG, I had forgotten that technically you are not a chap, although in the plural the term can be used loosely to cover both genders. No offence.
|
|
Lud - I wish. I still drive my Leaseplan Mazda6 and managed to hit and break one side of the front number plate frame last night on a low wall in a car park :-( And it would unscrew in a second if you took the bumper off! There is no way to get the thing off easily as there is no rear access. But that's another thread if the Araldite doesn't work ;-)
|
Now you see if you had a big solid LUDite bumper it would be perfectly ok.
|
"Sorry PG, I had forgotten that technically you are not a chap, although in the plural the term can be used loosely to cover both genders. No offence"
None taken!
Welcome, again, Rtj70... I guess now's not a good time to admit that I always think of you in my head as Reg. Sorry!

There's a mod called smokie?? Was that always the case?

Apart from obviously having full control over what us backroomers have to say , do the moderators enjoy other perks such as...
-Free tickets to Topgear/Auto exhibitions?
-A sportscar every other week/weekend to testdrive..?
-Hobnobbing with the mighty and powerful in the car industry on a first name basis?
-Insider deals and discounts on new/used cars..?
-?complementary tickets for F1/Goodwood revival?
Go on now, do tell us, you know we are all itching to know, and perhaps you may even get more applications for becoming mods(sadly i havent enough time, have to rule myself out on this one!!)

The above was actually posted by me, but DD has changed the name and edited the message, using the extra buttons available to him. ;-)

Ach, I ain't dissing, am just genuinely confused - am I right in thinking that this is a Prince situation, and smokie is a mod formerly know as something else??
Maybe I'm just losing my mind!
|
That'll be me. I've had a low profile over the past few months due to work commitments but you'll probably see more of me around now. And I've always been known as smokie
Anyway, since when have we had a member called XantKing? :-)

It's turning into a police state this site ;-)
Thanks for taking on the mod ops job rtj, this place is all the better for the moderation and I'll happily stump up for a ploughmans* to any mod who is passing the little house on the prairie on the M62 between Leeds and Manchester
*one time offer, ploughmans may be substituted by curry according to availability. One ploughmans per mod, offer not open to moderator's family or nominated understudy. Moderators must show, on demand an edit button that lasts for more than five minutes to take advantage of this offer. Offer also open to "classic" mods (MM!). Offer not available to residents of Leamington Spa.

No cash value.
