Going up north on a Sunday

Does anyone have any advice on whether it would be better to, when hitting the M40 after the A34, to go

M40 > A46 > M69 > M1

or

M40 > A43 > M1

or any other.......

also when going north of Leeds, would you advise sticking on the M1 or go M1 > M18 > A1

TIA

From west oxfordshire going to York or Durham I have tried both of the routes you propose and still end up coming back to my preferred route, M40 north to M42, A42, M1. I used to use M18 then A1 but since the M1 connection through Leeds I now almost always stay on the M1 north joining the A1 just south of York near the A64 .

I always try and time my journey so that I avoid the worst of the bottle necks at rush hour but the only real delay I get is usually unpredictable (eg lorry shed its load etc).

M1 widening around Nottingham - I was on it on Monday and vowed to use the A38 until the job is finished.

South of Leeds follow M1 around east Leeds on A1-M1 link to A1 then to Ripon.

OK so the M42 > A42 > M1 seems to make sense. I presume that the A42 is dual the whole way, and I presume beats going around Coventry.

Also noted is staying on the M1>A1 rather than the M1/M18>A1

Thanks

Hopefully should not have a problem on a Sunday.
On weekdays M1 Northbound is okay in the morning rush (unless theres a crash/breakdown) but solid in the evening. Southbound is solid in the morning and okay in the evening.

If theres a problem around M1 J28, the A38 clogs up really easily.

Heading to the M1, there's not much to choose, especially on Sunday.

North of Leeds, just stay on the newish M1 link road and follow the signs for A1 North. It's a good road and well thought-out. Ripon is only a couple of miles away from the A1.

Nice Chinese on the market square (Dragon Inn, IIRC) and worth being on the square around 8:30 for the City's Wakeman to assure the residents that all is safe :)

I can thoroughly recommend the A46 - M69 section. It's usually deserted.

Did this route to Derby from Hythe a few weeks back and it was trouble free and quick, satnav gave me the route, never even knew there was an M69!!
Shows how long its been since I was 'on the road'.

A42 is dual all the way and on a Sunday is probably the best bet - fewer roundabouts.

Anyone doing this trip on a weekday should avoid the M42 in rush hour. I usually use A43 going north, but coming back south would turn off for A42 or M69 if there's warning of yet another unnecessary accident on the M1.

I wqs in Northampton today and was told that both carriageways of the M1 were closed again near Leicester. I can't think why there is so much bad driving on this M-way in particular.

Can only comment on the M1 owards.

I reckon the M18/A1(M)/A1 is best.

It's about seven miles shorter and avoids the M1 section past Sheffield/Meadowhall shopping centre which can be congested at any time.

Swanky new services just opened at Wetherby, which you will pass using either route.

A slightly more direct route into Ripon is to use the A168 for a few miles - it runs alongside the A1(M) and can be picked up at Boroughbridge.

Then take the B6265 for the three or four miles into Ripon.

You have to use the A168 because here's no access to the B-road from the A1(M).

I find the A43 quite tedious. It is normally free-flowing except for the first roundabout off the M40 and the first roundabout off the M1.

There are roundasbouts every couple of mile.

The A43 is a bit tedious with the roundabouts, but I do find that it is a lot quicker than going all the way up to Solihull on the M40 and then all the way across on the M/A42.
I would also suggest that you stay on the M1 rather than go up the M18 - on a Sunday you should be ok past Meadowhall.
Funnily enough, I have friends in both Ripon and Winchester, and, living in Sheffield, have done the route a fair bit.

FWIW make sure you know where you are going when you get into Ripon. The planners are "at it" so it may have changed since you were last there. I couldn't find a way through to the A61 from Clotherholme and ended up enjoying a blast on the bike to North Stainley.

thanks all.

will see how the traffic is on the M40. Never been on the M69 so might go that way and will stick to the M1 past Leeds.
