My first post to go to two volumes!
There are a few Setright articles in the book. Amazing how much text there was back then and how few photos. The 'new' Fiesta review is one small photo and a whole page of 8 point text. Each article is like reading the pages of a novel.
I blame desk top publishing for fancy fonts and loads of piccies!

And the worse thing text superimposed over photos - makes it difficult to read for heaven's sake.

I stupidly bought a copy of Nov 2008 CAR at the airport last week. Should have bought a classic car mag instead.
There was a test between the 500, new Ka and Twingo. Years ago it would have had pages of detail about all the driving aspects, but this was about 25% of the text length and some photos, none of which showed the cars in a sensible view and it was clear that the options list had been plundered to make the Fiat more attractive than the Ford. The rest of the mag was about some unfeasibly expensive motors and even the long term tests were of cars which us mere mortals wouldn't buy.

Yes I saw that magazine and had a quick flick through but the article didn't give very much detail at all. I agree on what you say about the 500 Espada. I am no fan and would much rather get a discounted Panda: an honest little runaround. I think the 500 is a bit too schmatzy and kitsch.
As said elsewhere Autocar is still a good magazine and Auto Express not bad either still lack depth and insight compared to 10-20 years ago. As a kid I would buy CAR first and if I had some spare cash, I'd buy Fast Lane for a read about the flash stuff. That was a well written magazine too, Andrew English was on the staff.

Heh heh... Car magazine got the habit from Oz I think.
Of course the Oz people were just too stoned to manage proper layout, then liked the effect. Most of it wasn't worth reading anyway. But everyone thought it frightfully cool and modern and it fell - I use the word purposely - into fashion. Then, fortunately, out again.

I used to read that in the sixth form - what a bad boy I was.
