October 2008
I have just this morning received a Penalty Notice for an alleged bus lane incursion, in a bus lane just outside Reading Rail Station. The date of the alleged incursion is 22nd June 2008. The alleged offence was spotted by a CCTV camera operative and a penalty notice has finally been issued (dated 7th October 2008). I've looked up the rules around these notices on the tinternet, and it seems local authorities can issue notices up to 6 months after an alleged offence, so fair enough, even if it feels a little late.
I was definately in the area at the time of the alleged offence, as I was picking a gentleman up from the train station at the time and date stated, this was someone who had travelled from London to buy a car from me, hence I have records to show what I was doing that day and I rememeber the time I agreed to meet him at the station. The alleged offence occurred in my car, registered to me, and I know for a fact I was driving it in the area on the date and time recorded. So far, so banged to rights.
I have absolutely no recollection, however, of entering a bus lane, and would be surprised if I had done so as I'm not the sort to do this usually.
So, I have sent off a request to view the CCTV footage at Reading Civic Centre, as the notice states that I have a right to do so. I await a timed and dated appointment, as proimised on the notice.
My question is this. Should I pay the fine now during the 14 days-reduced-to-30-pounds rule, and then claim the money back if it turns out that I feel I didn't commit an offence? Or should I hold out paying until I've seen the footage? If I take the latter course, do I risk missing out on the 14 day payment, 30 pounds allowance and end up paying 60, or even 90 pounds if it goes beyond 28 days? Needless to say, the Penalty Notice does not clarify this situation.
Would appreciate any thoughts from BR contributors.
NOTE: I am not trying to get off the fine if I have commitied the alleged offence - if I see the video and I have done something I shouldn't have, I will proceed immediately to the accounts window in the Civic Centre and settle up. What I'm trying to do is pay as little as possible in the event that I have been a naughty little boy. Read more

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
The light does not work even using the manual push button.
It used to come on when opening doors and gradually dim till it went out.

I have covered 40k in my IS220 diesel and only get between 31 and 32 mpg (Shell ultimate). I only do long journeys and I am not a fast driver. I was surprised to find that when I drove an identical car the service agent lent me at the last service I got 47 mpg. All the Lexus agents Ihave contacted agree something is wrong with my car but none has yet said they can fix it. If someone knows what actually needs to be done to improve the consumption (or where I can definitely have it fixed) I would be interested to know as I really can not afford to go on as I am with this vehicle. James,
How are you calculating the MPG via the trip computer or measuring brim to brim, I suggest if you are getting it from the trip you should stop. Try filling the tank to the brim from empty, take the reading in litres from the pump, run until empty and then calculate the consumption, trip computers are very inaccurate.
If you are measuring brim to brim give it to Lexus and leave it until resolved (at their cost if possible)

A lot is down to what they eat. Commercial egg producers can use a colour chart to buy food to give whatever colour they like, so most battery eggs will usually be a uniform colour. Likewise most large scale free-range which get virtually all their food from the farmer, even organic feeds contain a natural colouring agent. True free range eggs will vary depending on what the bird gets hold of.
A couple of weeks ago when I parked on a channel ferry I switched off the two alarm switches in the driver's door pocket: Internal Movement and Incline Alarm. I always do this as I don't want to look a twit with my alarm going off when we we all return to collect our cars after a bumby crossing.
This time I did look a twit with the alarm going off. I couldn't use the remote on the key - it had no effect. I unlocked the driver's door with the key and the very feeble alarm (EU rules I think) only stopped when I put the key in the ignition slot and turned it on whence a "clunk" told me that the doors had all unlocked.
So far so good, but this is now the only way to both lock and then get in to the car and it's been a pain for two weeks in France. My handbook tells me nothing about re-setting things. Is it a fault or can I reset it by holding the key in the ignition in a certain place for a certain time? Or maybe something similar. Read more
No - no water, not even when crossing the channel.
I refer the honourable gentleman to the first post.
Hi folks,
just joined the forum though have been reading HJ's page in the Telegraph motoring section for years, and naturally came straight here with my problem.
Anyway, I have a 2002 Modeo 2L tdci. Bought it with 124K on the clock and have owned it for 30 months and loved it until recently. It's just past 200K now.
So, a few weeks ago it broke down while my wofe was driving, I got it going and thought that it was just that she had been driving around with an empty tank as the light was on. Happened again a couple of weeks later with a full tank.
My local garage said it would have to go to a fuel specialist and if it was found to be the fuel pump then it would be big bill. I had to agree to this as work is quiet and cant get another for 12 months. Anyway to cut a long story short, the 'specialist' diagnosed the problem and changed the fuel pump. This took nearly 10 days. Within a couple of hundred miles the same problem arose. As you can imagine I wasnt happy after paying £951 incl VAT. Had to be lifted and taken back to the specialist. They diagnosed the problem and this time replaced the scavenger pump. Have now done several hundred miles and it is fine, problem solved.
My question is this.....am I within my rights to demand my money back for the fuel pump repair as it is blatantly obvious that they mis-diagnosed the problem originally and there was no need to change the fuel pump. Im happy for them to keep the £104 for the scavenger pump replacement.
As yet i havent called them because the mechanic who did the work on both occassions is not in till thursday and I wanted to speak to him before going off on a rant at the management.
advice would be greatly appreciated. Read more
more info.
the diagnostic fault code was P0148, something about an ECU and IAT centre. needed re-programming and the pump replacing.

That's useful, didn't know about it, thanks.
Hi everyone, I have had my Clio from new and until now without any problems. The car is a perfect starter from cold but this week when I have stopped and the engine is still warm it refuses to start. I have to leave the car to cool down (so there is just one bar on the temperature gauge) before it will start, could it be something that is either breaking down or a sensing problem when the engine is at operating temp. Any help or advice would be welcomed. The battery seems to be ok and all the warning lights extinguish including the immobilizer light, and the fact that it will start after cool down points in a temp direction, do you think? Read more
Thanks topbloke, I will let you know if it cures the problem, cheers.
Hi all,
First post and used to old mechanical cars so please be gentle!!
The mother-in-law has a 98 1l Corsa that she keeps at ours for when she visits. It has two problems:
* Speedo doesn't work (think this is the sensor on the gearbox)
* Runs slightly rough at idle. When running there is intermittent hesitation which I can best describe as if trying to drive an older car with the choke out.
She has taken it to the local garage who have 'put it on the computer'. They are saying it needs the sensor and a new injector. For this they have charged her £45 and want £400 for the work.
My question is is this engine that complicated? From what I can see there are 3 injectors and they want to replace 1. Does the replaced injector have to be programmed to the car or is it a swap out? The car only cost £450 in the first place with 9 months tax!!!
Thanks in advance for your answers
Simon

Thanks for that all,
Just been having another look.
Firstly have removed the speedo and cleaned up the connector block which was clean anyway. Replaced and all the same, i.e. everything on the dash works except the speedo. I can see the sensor on the gearbox but haven't found where to buy one just yet.
In the engine bay I've not touched the injectors or spark plugs yet as I don't have a star driver big enough to remove the rail above the plugs. However what I did notice was that the plug for the EGR valve was removed. Previously a mechanic friend of the wife had had a look and managed to plug the lambda into what I now know was the EGR socket. I had put the lambda back in place but at that time couldn't see where the other (EGR) went. Anyway that is replaced. I also then disconnected the battery for 10 minutes hoping to clear any fault codes. On reconnecting the light flashes once and then stays on, just as before.
After all that I took it for a short test drive. So far there is no hesitation. Idle is still a little lumpy but believe that is common to this engine. Fingers crossed and will go for a longer run later but hopefully that's it

Hi,I have been reading about some 2.0HDI Picassos suffering from terminals on the ECU corroding away.I would like to unplug my ECU to check mine for corrosion. Is it ok to unplug the ECU or is this a no no as it may upset the set up of things.Or are there any things I need to be aware of?? Any info would be great please. Many Thanks Andrew...

It's French - but "Built-in Systems Interface" is one translation.

Thanks for that information, Alanovich. I never knew that and I'm glad that my £30 went there (at least I hope it did - I had to send it to somewhere in Sussex).
Would that all fines went to a worthy, or at least identifiable, cause.
