It's not windscreen washer bottle low, is it? (The spout at the top in the middle?)
Cannot remember whether it was a Volvo or an Audi - or both that had it. Probably both.

I'm betting it is the low coolant warning light. Check the bottom of the radiator for leaks. It's going off after a while because of the coolant expanding as it warms.
NB: My old 306 had a light just like this, and no mention of it in the manual.

If a light is RED,it is normally something serious.

Thanks for the steer on this. I've checked right through the manual again, and although there are mis-prints (the reference numbers are out of synch with the diagrams), I have found another page which suggests this is the Low Coolant Level light.
Will check it out and (hopefully) a top-up will fix it!
I have not noticed any leaks at all. Is this sort of water loss from the radiator normal over time, or should I be worried???
Thanks again.

Fixed it!
Thanks to AlastairW, who figured out my useless original description of the problem.
Took about 2 pints of water to top up.
Question still remains - is there anything I should be worried about, or is it normal to lose some water over time?
Many thanks

I still think you have a leak somewhere, though it may be hard to spot. By the end of its life my 306 had to be topped up with two litres before even the shortest journey though professional strength radweld cured it for a few weeks.

If you topped up with pure water you will have reduced the concentration of the anti-freeze mixture.
