I have read that rocker cover gasket oil leaks do no always produce a noticeable drop in the level on the engine oil dipstick. But surely after some time a motorist would notice a drop in the level ?

Also what would I look out for under the bonnet e.g. fresh oil marks, to alert me to a problem ?

My main worry would be apart from losing oil, that the timing belt and asscociated components could become contaminated, but I suppose that depends on which end of the engine the leak is coming from ?

Also if the oil level does go down on the dipstick, it doesn't necessarily mean there are any leaks does it.

Thanks

If you're loosing a noticable amount of oil (as you are), solely through the rocker cover, then you'll notice it on your driveway.

Hi,

My TDCi mondeo 130 has developed a problem when particularly cold. From a cold start, trying to turn the key results in a loud whine, but no attempt to turn over the engine. This happened once the other day, once last night, and about 10 times this morning (i.e. as the weather has started getting very cold). Seeing as it happened so many times this morning, I was able to check the warning lights, and apart from oil, handbrake and battery (obviously all on until engine starts and car is moving), the fuel light (it has more than half a tank at present) was the only other light.

So then any ideas? It runs fine once eventually started, but as it took so long to start this morning, i'm guessing it may not start many more times...

Cheers!

Hi,

I've just been given a C220CDI Auto as a company car and not too sure which is the most economical setting for the auto box?

It's a five speeder with Comfort and Standard as the choices.

In Comfort it certainly changes gear earlier BUT the transmission 'slips' more than when in standard when you accelerate.

In Standard, changes are later but less slip in the gearbox.

Anybody know what's most economical? The Slip and early change up or less slip but higher RPM to change?

I have to say though that either way, I'm quite impressed with it's economy. I've kept it in standard most of the time and most of my driving is motorway work at about 80MPH. The average MPG (brim to brim not trip computer) has been 43.1MPG.

PS - I'm fully aware that Comfort and Standard will both be as economical as each other when cruising on the motorway. Read more

Might you not have got better economy sticking with the temporary Passat on a permanent basis?

How do both compare to the 1.8 SMax diesel you previously had?

I have had my Vectra from new and it has now covered 31000 miles. Recently the power steering has developed a fault. When the vehicle is started from cold or is say just ticking over the power steering is not working and it is like driving a car without power steering, when the engine has some revs on and has warmed up the power assistance improves but it is not as it should be.

Before I run up some large repair bills I would appreciate some idea of what maybe wrong and what sort of cost is likely to be involved. Read more

I've often toyed with the concept of owning a nippy moped what with their cheap insurance, high mpg, low maintenance and easy parking, not to mention low VED.

Has anyone got any practical advice to impart regarding which manufacturer makes the best moped and whether a 2 stroke or 4 stroke is best or air or water cooled is quicker, more economical, quieter etc, etc.

thanks Read more

I second the comments about getting a 125. As well as the extra turn of speed you get noticeably better economy - main reason being that a 50 is running pretty much flat out the whole time.

Case in point - before I did DAS I had a 50cc Kymco Cobra and at the time my Dad had a 125cc Kymco (can't recall the model name). He is about a stone heavier than me - but his machine was achieving nearly 100 mpg whereas mine could not better 78 mpg.

I was happily driving my Vauxhall Vectra 1.9CDTi 04 reg. along yesterday and after about half an hour i noticed that the car was getting warmer. I turned the heater onto cold only to find that it was already switched to cold. The temperature gauge was fine and i cannot see any other fault. Basically the heater blows out hot regardless of what it is switched too. Any idea as to what i can do to fix this please.? Read more

They all pretty much point to the same thing - A faulty servo that is accessed by removing the glovebox.
