Hello,
I am new to the forum and I would like to ask if there are any news regarding the problem with DPF filter in Kugas.I was interested in this car but since my everyday mileage is low I have second thoughts for ordering one.
Thanks Read more
I agree with Avant that in some cases, manufacturers have introduced DPFs without fully testing them in all possible driving conditions.
But the whole DPF issue reminds me of the early 90s when catalytic converters were introduced on all petrol cars -- yes, there were problems, and those owners with problems had to fight recalcitrant dealers and manufacturers.
But despite the horror stories in the motoring press at the time, of catalyst matrices getting broken going over speed humps, killing cats with push / tow starts etc, the sheer cost of maintaining the complexities of lambda sensors etc .... the technology has proved significantly more reliable than was predicted at the time.
Hi,
My father, in his 70s, has received a D46P Licence Renewal Application.
On the front it states
YOU CAN TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO RENEW THE PHOTO ON YOUR LICENCE
The notes , INF5D, states
A message in the top right hand side of the form will tell you if your photo is due to be renewed
I'm assuming "YOU CAN" means there is no obligation.
Agree ? Read more
I believe you Monsieur, I just don't believe them :-)
I need to change my front disc pads.
From a quick look it would appear that it will be neccesary to remove the whole caliper from the hub in order to change the pads. It appears to be fixed with 2 hex head screws with a non-standard sized hex.
( Grrr. I suppose this is to discourage diy work. )
Am I correct, or can the pads be changed, "the old way" ie: by removing pins, clips etc. and sliding them out of the caliper while it stays fixed ?
Any advice appreciated thanks. Read more
Bit off subject (Focus II front brakes) but:
I have a Focus II 1.6TDCI 110 Estate with VERY impressive brakes. But estate Foci have rear discs. I also SUSPECT they are electro-hydraulicly pressurised as there appears to be no vacuum booster on the firewall.
If this is so, (possibly off the same pump as the electro-hydraulic PAS?) there may be quite big variations between various models of FocusII.
My last car was a 1992 2.0 Sierra Estate which had this electro -hydraulic system and it was quite brilliant over 250,000 miles. I do not agree that rear discs are incompatible with a goos handbrake - that Sierra still had excellent handbrake efficiency at 15 years old. The only problem with age is corrosion of the return spring on the rear calliper (it`s the Teves system) - weakens the spring and the adjuster eventually stops adjusting. I`m talking about mileages around 150,000 plus, when new callipers are not exactly an insult (they used to cost around £30 and I did two in the end).
Our Subaru Legacy (1999) has drums inside the rear discs like the man says above about Volvo. These work fine too, but it`s only done 100,000 so a bit early to give a verdict.

The final task to hopefully make as rust proof as possible the underside of my vehicle :)
What are the best products or substances to apply to rust proof the centre and back box sections of an exhaust please?
These two sections are after the cat converter so don't get as hot.
I collect the sections tomorrow and they are being fitted Monday at Kwick Fit (best price I could get and beat everyone else down from a max quote of £160 (ATS) to £120 with a three year warranty.

I poured engine oil down the downpipe of a 1953 Rover 75 I owned to stop internal rust.
(about 0.5pint of used engine oil).
I left a trail of blue smoke after 200 metres - and it lasted 3 miles and covered an area 10 metres wide and 5 high.
Not a good idea in towns... that was in darkest rural Scotland and the cows did not complain....
I would welcome any comments, advice or suggestions about the following;
I have 2003 Volvo XC90 D5 AWD diesel. It has done 60000 miles. It had full Volvo service history when I bought it at 33000 miles in April 2006. I bought it from a Volvo main dealer. I had it serviced at that dealers in March 2007. In early 2008 it had an oil leak from the engine and cost £700 to put right at that dealers. In March 2008 I had it serviced at a local indpendent garage. Last Thursday (11/9/08) it lost power. The AA came out and diagnosed a slipped cam belt. Vehicle recovered to independent garage who found the cam belt tensioner had disintegrated. I understand that this a non-serviceable item....sealed for life and required by Volvo to be changed at 96k or 8 years. The top of the engine is damaged and estimates are £2700 and above. Has anybody else experienced this problem? Could this be a manufacturing fault? How would I go about proving a fault? Clearly this item should last as long as the recommended exchange interval and not less than 2/3 of that life! The vehicle has been removed to the Volvo dealers for examination and report. The initial response from Volvo UK and the Volvo dealer is that they are not responsible. Advice please!!

Two fingers to you, Avant, seemes to be the message!
(Sorry, I've no idea how to stop him.)
Has anyone any experience with the Citroen 1.9 (non turbo) diesel engine.....Xdu I think it's called.
Are they capable of big mileages with regular maintenance also any reliability issues?
Ta in advance. Read more
No chance! The high compression ratio sends the NOx levels sky high, it won't make a comeback i'm afraid.
The XUDs were very good in their day, but they wouldn't cut the mustard by today's standards.
Bought my Auto Golf about a year ago but for the majority of that time the car has had the Exhaust System light showing and sometimes also the EPC light. It has been in and out of garages to get this fixed - but after replacing the Lambda sensor, having the Torque Convertor replaced and spending ££££££ the dashboard fault lights are back on and I'm at a loss to know what to do next.
The car seems to drive Ok, but when the EPC light comes on I have to stop and restart the engine to get it out of "Get me home mode"... I've also read the post about the brake light sensor.
I would take this to a small independent, but a couple of months ago the lights came on as I was passing the authorised dealer - so I took it in there and the ecu fault indicated the throttle position sensor to blame. An air intake hose was replaced and the accelerator pedal fault was noted as "sporadic and may return".
The sensor light did return, so I took it back to the Authorised Dealer as I thought it may be the same problem so may be fixed for free. No such joy - this time the Speed Sensor was deemed faulty and needed replacing...!
Anyhow the dashboard fault lights are back on and I'm at a loss to know what to do next - especially when the dealer seems to charge £130+ VAT just to diagnose the fault before anything gets done.
Can anyone help before I drive this unreliable heap thru a showroom window?!!
Thanks

AVU is fine; 102PS 8-valve used 2000 - '02.
So they found a problem with the accelerator pedal position sensor - but did nothing about it.... and it came back? That must have shocked them?
There is indeed a VSS sensor on these; but if it failed, it would only have a marginal effect on the running and stop the speedo reading.
Without knowing which of the many APP sensor [no TPS on this one] codes that was found; it's difficult to advise further. I'd suggest that you re-try that independent you mentioned and, at least, get all the codes.
Hi there
I have a 1.9 TDI Leon and it has always had a starting problem since initially purchased.
The pre-heat light (for the glow plugs) on the dash board never stays on, i have so far had it in the garage (NOT Main dealer) 3 times trying to solve the starting problem, so far the following has been checked and ok'd
glow plugs are new and in full working order
wiring has been checked by auto electrician and all ok
new temp switch has been added
(The only way we can get the pre-heat light to stay on for any length of time is to disconnect the temp switch, then the light stays on for the described 2/3 seconds).
So basically the car seems to think the engine is constantly warm and therefore the glow plugs are never told to kick in! Luckily the car does start from cold without the glow plugs however it cant be doing ity much good! The car runs perfectly once started.
Anyone have any ideas or heard of this type of problem before?
Cheers in advance! Read more

Advert in the local free rag astonished me the other day.
3.7l V6 Dodge Nitro, a car that was only released last year and seems to have had reasonable enough reviews, retailing at £24000, on sale brand new (not pre-reg) for a little over thirteen grand, at a main dealer. No haggling, that's the advertised price.
Now I know that demand for such vehicles has nose-dived, and I know that Chryslers aren't the first choice for many anyway, but this seems like madness to me.
Are these cars really such a disaster area that a dealer has to offer them for half price to shift them? Read more
I have owned one for over a year now,and cannot fault it 0-60 is quicker than a range rover far better on fuel a lot less unstable in the corners, certainly not as refined or as well put together as a range rover although saying that every person i have spoke to have had something gone wrong with their rr,so it's your own opinion. All The people who are bad mouthing it have probably never actually drove one so really cant say!
I say have a test drive,I think you may be suprised!
to be honest i havnt. ill put a post on it
