the handling is FAR superior.
I seem to recall the phrase "thoroughbred stinker" being used to describe the chassis of this car in one review I read. Are you sure?

Having owned 2 Range Rovers, the Dodge Nitro is a far better "Road going 4x4".
Off road, its 4x4 system is not as good as a Range Rovers.
But as a day to day road going SUV its way ahead of the Range Rover. I would never go back to one now.
You're really just showing how carp a RR is ;-).
I think if someone really wants a big 4x4 towcar they could do a lot worse. If image isn't an issue look at the rates you can lease them for - in Nov 08 Whatcar page 274: Freedom vehicle contracts - same car £138+VAT per month over 2 years.
With the possibility of Chrysler not being in the UK in 2 or 3 years time it makes a risky purchase but that is Citroen C1 lease money!
Dang ugly tho - think SsangYong Rodius !
If only they'd put in 7 seats they'd have had an absolute winner. And at that price I'd have snapped it up.
"Embarrassing" is probably the best word I can find to describe it.
followed by "chavtastic" ;)

Dear me, Chryslers are poor cars, no wonder they've gone bust a couple of times. Poorly made, interior like a Chinese toy plastic. takes about 6 weeks to get hold of parts from dealer (everything has to be ordered specially) and then expensive when it arrives. I dont think they'll be around much longer in the UK, not many people buy one again.
It may not be total rubbish but - in my view- any UK owner has a taste and discernment bypass. :-)
But hey it takes all types...
This car really does split opinion! But as they say talk is cheap and I expect all the people who like to slag off the Nitro have either probably never owned one or have enough money to pay twice the price and get a Q7 or an X5! The Nitro and the Jeep cherokee are near identical stable mates which offer a solid reliable alternative to the anonymous asian clones available in the UK. However the Nitro comes as standard with a whole host of options that would blow the budget on any other car. I for one love the Dodge/Jeep styling, and for the reasonable price I paid, I could not want a better car and would buy another in an instant!
If I had enough money I'd get a decent car, not a yanktank or any of its European or Asian counterparts... thats not slagging it off, its just passing an opinion that I hve no need for a "compromise" car like an SUV - I'd rather just have a proper luxury car or a decent large 4x4 like a Range Rover if I was going to spend money in that sort of market.
Only the Americans could build a car that you either love or hate the styling of; personally I like it and so does Mrs. H, and I'd buy one if I needed it or could afford to.
As for the Range Rover, the modern ones look like a Metrocab taxi; think Clarkson said that first about them but for once he's right. It needed a makeover, sure, but now it just looks bland from the outside, no matter how good the mechanicals might be.
we looked at one becuase it was so heavily discounted - looks naff on the road, cheap plastics & i too have a little lol when is see one becuse it has the word 'plonker' written all over it.
To me, it doesn't scream 'plonker' any more than any big 4x4, and less so than some chavved up RR. If people like them and think they are value for money, good for them. At least they are a bit more individualistic than the cars bought by badge-snob crowd followers.
Never driven one. But from spec it seems a bargain.
As long as you have warranty it should be as good (or bad) as any other cars.
My comments (further up thread) were based not so much on its appearance as the fact that ALL chryslers Ive seen in the UK are poorly engineered and use poor quality components. Also we have problems obtaining parts in a timely manner, and the parts are usually very expensive. I quality terms Chrysler are close to the bottom of the market and the drive is very disappointing. Their Chrysler and Dodge branded cars (like the Avenger, PT) are poor efforts and have almost sunk without trace on the UK market. A Kia or Hyundai are better engineered, better quality and more reliable. There is no reason to buy a Chrysler and thats why they have had to give them away and are basically bankruopt. If you do buy one dont expect to get spares for it in the future.
we looked at one .......... it has the word 'plonker' written all over it.
(LOL) and so you went to look at one because of or despite this fact :-) (LOL)

So range rovers start at how much 60k? and the Dodge can be had for well less than 20k! Get real b308, Try comparing the Dodge against comparable vehicles like the Kia, ssangyong or the Hyundai and you'll see that the Dodge is not only better spec'ed, better priced, as good to drive and more distinctive. Personally I require a powerful 4x4 for my towing needs and with its huge lb-ft torque it performs extremely well. Maybe you ought to try actually driving one :-)
Glad to hear you're happy with yours, Parsley.
So, which Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep dealer do you work for, then?
Parsley, all I was saying is that I believe that there are better cars for the money... though for 13k its certainly a lot of car for the money, for 24k perhaps not so... personally I just don't like the look or feel of SUVs, I just feel that they are too much of a compromise, is that wrong?
No b308 = not that you'd believe it in here occasionally !
Each to there own, b308. t'would not do to all be the same would it my friend :-) ... and I could not agree more with part of your post as I paid a price I was happy with for my Dodge and I simply love it! However I would not have paid anyway near 20K for it, never mind 24K :-O 'cause for that sort of money there are, as you say, better cars for the money!
BTW I don't work for a Jeep/Dodge dealership, more's the pity, as I could of got it even cheaper then!! Happy New Year.

Caught an eye full of a red one of these in a supermarket car park earlier, a different looking car but there wasn't anything wrong with it. There is no such thing as a car that everyone agrees on, what sells here well doesn't sell well abroad. I'd much rather have a dodge than a lot of the other stuff in our car parks.
If its dumb to buy one of these cheap, spare a thought for a fella I know who came up with the brilliant idea of exchanging his high spec Merc ML320 CDi for a Mitsubishi Shogun - and no he doesnt tow a horsebox or go any further off-road than the pavement... I know which id say was the crazier decision!
Not the best and not te worst.
One major problem with this vehicle - spares. Availability is a problem but the cost through dealerships is worse than the Hyundai parts list. Hyundai's is the worst I have come across for price.
A long time ago I exchanged my 3 year old Range Rover for the first of the Shoguns (2.3) - result - got out of a great to drive but unreliable car into a reliable but rubbish to drive car - result - sold the Shogun after a year.
A few have mentioned parts availability problems and expensive main dealer prices. So expensive parts aren't a problem with other marques, then? Why go to a main dealer anyway? Genuine Chysler parts are much cheaper in the states. I can get any part for any American car for a fraction of what parts suppliers charge over here. The ex wife had to wait two weeks for a window winder regulator for a Fiat Uno from the main dealer. I ordered a motor housing for a Camaro and five days later it was on the car. Guess which was cheaper?
Kia/Hyundai are poor on parts pricing and availability, but chrysler are probably about the worst. no doubt due to very poor sales they can hardly support dealers and a parts stock.
Most people have their cars repaired at garages rather than DIY and whilst we can buy some factored parts, a lot have to come from the main dealer. RHD UK market chryslers are a lot different from their US market equivalents, so buying from the US is not something I would want to get involved in. most owners want their car back on the road ASAP.
Chryselrs are not doing well even in their home market and in the UK are on their last legs, their saloon cars have been a sales disaster and the cars are cheaply and crudely made, the only way to shift stock is to almost give them away. I doubt they are making any profit and they are going to be around a lot longer.
Man you really hate Dodges don't you! I have to say that my experience is completely at odds with your viewpoint. My dodge has been 100% reliable and I have ordered parts from my local dealer which have been supplied quite swiftly and cheaply. Also because the mechanicals on the dodge are quite low tech and durable the sub £200 servicing costs are very low compared with my experiences with previous fords, vauxhalls and mitsubishis.

I dont hate any car, i just get paid to fix them. I dont like hassle though, like parts not being available. Id like to know the name of your dealer, anytime we want parts from chrysler (other than filters and belts) its a long wait and they cost 3x what you expect. They are a low rent bit part player in the uk, be interesting to see if fiat can help give them a leg up, but I am not holding my breath given fiats reputation.

>>Kia/Hyundai are poor on parts pricing and availability, but chrysler are probably about the worst.
Workshop Tech,
I know that this is changing the subject, but who are at the top of the table?
Chrysler Jeeps are manure!!
I have owned one for over a year now,and cannot fault it 0-60 is quicker than a range rover far better on fuel a lot less unstable in the corners, certainly not as refined or as well put together as a range rover although saying that every person i have spoke to have had something gone wrong with their rr,so it's your own opinion. All The people who are bad mouthing it have probably never actually drove one so really cant say!
I say have a test drive,I think you may be suprised!
