anybody have any ideas what could be the problem?

sometimes the car starts, sometimes it won't. sometimes it cuts out whilst driving but will start back up.

it displays no faults, diagnostic machines can find no faults but still problem persists.

fuel delivery pressure from intank pump is 278 (is this correct pressure?)

when ignition is on/ car cuts out there is a whining noise from the front (sounds like no fuel is getting to engine)

if anybody can shed any light please let me know. it is getting quite frustrating as i do not feel safe taking the car on long journeys as i don't often get signal on my mobile to call RAC!!

I have had the same thing happen to me. engine would cut out when at idle, could re start it would idle for about 15-20 sec then cut out, or some tomes not start at all.

Located problem to be reverse light switch on gearbox , the terminals are supposed to be isolated from outer casing of switch, however I checked mine with multimeter and found meg homes on one terminal to body of switch, other terminal in k ohms to body of switch....

With more details emerging of the VW Golf Mk6 (or should that be 5.5?) what case can be made for purchasing its cousin, the recently face-lifted Audi A3 Sportback, for example in 1.4TFSI SE form?

Not sure what difference this makes on the Golf, but the sportback is a little longer than the 3 door A3 - about 50mm IIRC. If Golf does not have the same then the Sportback may offer more rear room. May or may not be a consideration to you - it was to me.

I also drive Golfs on hire, and have to say that my Sportback does feel a nicer place to be - small things like the same stereo as Golf, but plastic knobs replaced with meatlic ones. Small things but do add to the "feel".

Incidently I have the "Special Eddition" model (Base + a/c) on 16" and have not noticed that road noise is an issue

The following has happened a couple of times since I've had the car from new and the dealer has always "reprogrammed it". When you bring the driver's electric window up it gets to closed and then drops a third of the way back down. This is a safety feature to stop kids' hands etc. getting in. Unfortunately you're left with a window open a third of the way unless you close it in tiny bits rather than letting it go up in one move. When it's happened before I remember the dealer saying it's just a matter of resetting via the electric window switches but I can't remember how.
Has anyone any idea how to do this so I can avoid a trip to the dealer? Read more

Ok. followed all above advice, took out both fuses (#5 & #15) and put them back after a minuet or two. Windows worked but I had no auto-up on both front windows (Auto-down worked fine). Held both window controls in the up position for about 30 seconds after windows were fully closed and hey presto, problem resolved.

Also have all windows opening and closing on the key fob. ...

Hi folks - really at my wit's end and would appreciate somebody helping me avoid descending into total insanity... My son has a 2000 1.2 Fiat Punto which I purchased from a relative. Low mileage and no problems until recently.
The battery keeps going flat after just a couple of days lack of use. I have had a new battery fitted and even had a mechanic pal look at it who couldn't find a problem. I read a similar problem on this site which suggested it might be the boot light staying on so I removed the bulb and for a week (driving it every other day or so) all was well so I thought I had solved the problem. However, I have just been out this evening (Tuesday) to start it up after driving it on Sunday morning and the battery is more or less dead again!
The only work carried out on the car since purchase has been a change of stereo - could it be this that is the problem? I have removed the fascia of the stereo unit every time the car is parked up so theoretically there should be no power drainage. My relative never had any battery problems with the car and when it does start, it runs very nicely. I am not at all car-minded so don't worry about patronising me with very basic solutions!
Any help would be very much appreciated!!! Thanks. Read more

Hi,

just looking for a bit of general advice on this subject.. My employer has 2 7.5t flatbed recovery trucks, which he does not maintain until they break(typical).

Am i right i saying that these trucks, should by law, have some sort of inspection every 4-6 weeks and obviously these checks should then be recorded.

Both drivers who drive the trucks full time are neither up or down about it, due to my boss saying that the trucks do not require the inspecton, but i'm not so sure that he's right.

Any help most appreciated,

thanks

My Vauxhall Meriva 1.6 Enjoy is out of warranty.
The word "Insp" now comes up above the odometer for a few seconds when you start the car to tell me it needs a service-- which its already had just a few hundred miles ago, from an independent mechanic.
I assume this indicator is something which is cancelled by Vauxhall when they service these cars under warranty, but does anyone know how I can cancel it? The handbook tells you what it means, but unsurprisingly gives no clue as to how to get rid of it. Its obviously not a serious issue, but still annoying.
Cheers in advance. Read more

Hi all,

I'm currently commuting from the suburbs to London on a 125 Vespa ET4. I really would like something with a bit more oomph, but don't want to lose the versatility and lightness of the scooter (ie somewhere to store helmet, easy to ride). I really fancy a BMW F650 CS scarver as a replacement. Anyone have an opinion? Also, any alternatives? I want something quite reliable but must also have a low seat (30inch or so). Don't want to spend more than £3k if poss.

Many thanks in advance,

Alex.

This thread seems to be going off at a tangent, apologies to the OP! Yes I'm well aware of the connection between MZ & Suzuki and what could of been. What must be remembered is East Germany was no utopia, one in four of the population were said to be informers to the secret police (Stasi), no one could be trusted. The brilliant german language film 'The Lives of Others' sets the scene well. No wonder Degner defected, what is amazing is how MZ achieved superb results on a shoestring budget. Their star rider was British - a very modest man called Alan Shepherd who used to have to pay his way to race events and after he retired was often the driver of enthusiast coach trips to Saxony and the MZ factory at Zchopau. Interestingly the 1970's Suzuki GT500 effectively uses two MZ250 engines joined together so Suzuki were not averse to 'borrowing' ideas well after the Degner incident.

We have a 02 HDI 110 Rapier 44k miles bought recently. Upon starting we receive the following fault warnings ESP/ASR NOT FUNCTIONING and then ANITPOLLTION FAULT, both of which repeat 3 times.

Now the first time this happened I took the car to a local garage (whom I know) to check it out, unfortunatle he couln'nt help as he said his machine could'nt read the codes.

So dealer he we come. They were vaery helpful and advised what the two warning lights ment, they also told me what could be the problems, they caried out various test and look would have it they informed me that the fault was down to a corroded connector on the BSI unit (located behind the glove box) so they striped irt down cleaned it up reset and cleared the faults and hey presto back to normal (no limp mode).
They did advise that the BSI unit may require replacing as the corrotion may have spread into the box.

Incidently the radio will not tune into any radio stations - rellivant I'm not sure...

3 weeks later driving along the motoway (which we do not often do long runs) on a rainy day (as we have a lot of latley) warning lights re-appeared and back into limp mode.

Back to the dealer who advised me that a new BSI (£480) plus a new FAP filter (£380) was required, I discided to have a look myself. Took the BSI unit out cleaned the connectors (which did look corroded and not like they had been cleaned before) put it all back together back to the dealer to clear the faults and back to normal again.

2 weeks later on another motorway journey (this time dry) and the faults re-appeared.

I realise it may be that I need a new BSI unit but I am a bit relucant to fork out £480 plus the £380 for the filter when I am not convinced the problem cannot be fixed.

Any suggestions?? Read more

As the car has done over 44k & FAP change at this year would be 50k anyway, I would get the FAP replaced & EOLYS refilled.
If that doesn't cure it you will at least have 50k to the next FAP change.

Hello

I've picked up a great little runner which failed it's MoT on rear light not working - simple fix was new bulbs - and the passenger door handle fascia was broken off - although it still works!!!

I tried to take the door panel off but have been stumped with the removal of the window winder. Do you have a take apart or step by step guide for the handle replacement please.

I also fear that there may be some "special" industry tool needed to unclip/remove the window winder.

Please advise

At point (7) you can improve visibility by releasing the lower end of the window glass guide (remove bolt at bottom of rear of door) and flexing it forward (pull out the rubber to help) don't worry it all clips back together again! It might also help to loosen the lower but on the lock barrel protector plate and swivel that out the way too (the upper end is released when you remove one of the handle nuts at step (5)

Note that the control rod only has to push down through the yellow guide until it reaches the first bend in the rod - it is then free to allow the mechanism to slide up and down it when the interior door handle is operated....
