On Sunday Aldi are doing various car related offers including a Tevion Bluetooth Radio CD with Aux input as well as SD card capability.

This ticks all the boxes to replace the radio/cassette in SWMBO's Beetle - anyone any experience of this radio unit?

My son collected his new Golf Bluemotion on Friday.

Drove it from Milton Keynes to Staffs Friday (motorway), Staffs to Slough Sunday (motorway), used it for work (3 miles each way) Monday onwards and on the way in to Work Thursday the DPF warning light came on.

Should they be this sensitive to short runs? And what is the point of a car built to be economical if you have to give it a blast at 2500 revs for 15 minutes every 3 days! Read more

Why do people ?secure? their wheel trims with plastic ties?

Is it to stop/deter wheel-trim thieves? If so, a pair of snippers or a sharp knife will sort that. Opportunist malicious thieves? Rare surely, and your car is just one of thousands to target.

Is it to prevent losing the wheel trim if it comes loose? Well, centrifugal force allied to the weight of the trim will make short work of a plastic tie at 30 mph, let alone 70+.

So please enlighten me. I don?t get it.

If an HGV has part of its load fall off whilst it is in transit
then the police will prosecute the driver for having an unsafe load: true?
If a plastic wheel trim falls off on the motorway at 70mph won?t the police
prosecute the driver on the same basis?

if a wheel falls off because the driver hadn't checked his wheelnuts for 10000 mls (and some) because the wheel trims have been tied on for so long, wont the police prosecute on the same basis?

Hi, just wondered if anyone had anything similar or knows what this problem could be. I have taken the car to a Peugeot dealership 4 times with regards to this and each time they believe they have fixed it but it always seems to happen again.

It is fine when starting the engine when it is cold but after driving somewhere then trying to start it again after say half hour or ten mins etc it only starts if i rev it at the same time. The engine also cut out on me the other day when driving which has never happened before. The car is just over a year old and has only done 9,000 miles....................any ideas?! Read more

We had same issue, wife's 2008 1.4 16v started having warm start issues. Then random warning lights started coming up and 'stop engine too hot' along with an over active fan. It was clear however the car was not overheating. After a lot of research all these issues pointed to a faulty coolant temperature sensor. I got a replacement from GSF car parts for £14. It's a Lille bit fiddly to change due to the part being obscured by cables on the top right hand side of the engine. You need to remove a large green circlip and pop it out. The disconnect the terminal. Ours was very corroded and the terminals were wet. I cleaned up the terminals and refitted the new part. Bingo, started first time, idled at the correct speed and all dials went back to normal with no warning lights! Hope this may help others.

Hi, Thanks for the info, I lost turbo power on my Vectra this morning and thought the worst, took it to my local garage who told me the fault was P0234 (only charged £20, thought this was good) . Checked out this thread and checked my hoses, found the top hose from the sensor split at the engine end, temporarily fitted another hose and now have turbo back, will source new hose soonest. Once again thanks for the help.

This came up on a non-car related forum today -- someone quoted HC rule 113, and on reading it, it flagged up something interesting:

113

You MUST

* ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
* use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
* use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226)

Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).

It's the second bullet-point that interests me. They appear to be saying that using headlights at night is either optional or forbidden (the wording is poor so hard to tell which) if you are driving in a street-lit area.

Surely this can't be right? On the one or two occasions that I've forgotten to switch headlights back on after stopping in a car park etc to drop someone off, and been driving around with sidelights, I've been flashed by other road users. This I've always taken to be justified, and I've been grateful to the other road user.

Now it appears that they may be wrong.

Can anyone clear this one up? Read more

I understood that it was illegal to park on the "wrong" side of the road with your headlights on?

I don't know what you understood(referring to the statement being made a question by addition of ?) but the HC says-

248
You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognised parking space.

Wife's car and therefore not noticed it before.

Definite lack of power, feels like driving a non turbo car. Although once up to speed things slightly improve.
Wife does little mileage from cold every day, so appreciate problems that causes. (And yes, before anyone asks, I have tried to get her to get on her bike, many times.)
I sometimes take it for a spin and give it a bit of welly, and watch the black stuff belching out the back, great satisfaction, but this time it does not seem to have helped.

Local independent recommended a mass air flow change, but reading everyone else's threads, it would appear not quite as simple as that. Although for the cost of the part £80, I might as well change it myself anyway, as it appears to be straight forward job.

Interested to know if this is this the magic cure or not, thanks for any advice given. Read more

I never finished this thread, it was the MAF after all. The blast down the motorways improved things but spasmodic. New MAF and as good as new.

Now in 2011 and still going strong....

Hi,

I'm flirting with the idea of a Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge, probably not for at least another year (thought I'd let supply improve) but was wondering which colour you people think it suits best.

Apparently 80% of them are being sold in white. The Fiat used site has only solid white and red. I think it looks good in solid white (not the bluey whitey pearl). Solid red and solid yellow seem to make it look even more like the original 500, as they're similar shades to the colours the original one came in.

Personally I'm going to avoid white as I want to be a bit different, and think there is a good choice of fun metallics. In particular, there is an olive green metallic shade which I think would look nice (and kind of 60s/70s retro). I think that because of the demand for this car, the colour choice is pretty unimportant to residuals, especially as Fiat don't offer it in any silly colours (as Honda seems keen to do with the Jazz).

So, any views on the olive green? Or have you seen it in another non-white or non-red shade which looks good? Please let me know, many thanks.

I think that's the other green. There are two. The pastel is chiaro (I think) verde.

My daughter has just bought a Peugeot 206 . It came with no service history and no handbook. Whilst searching ebay for a handbook I came across this...

My car (going to clear 200,000 miles tomorrow) has a nearly FSH with main dealers (all except 1, which came from the de-fleeting centre, but that was still written into the book) and for every single stamp in the book is the quick check sheet advising on the brake wear, tyre wear and what was done on the car at the time. I bought it from a little dealer who just dealt in Volvo estates, and got the majority of his stock from the local main dealer (I went there on their recommendation). When I took the car in for a service they noticed the car and then put 2 and 2 together and realised it was the one I'd got; they've serviced the car since it cleared 24k, right upto the 172k service. After that it's been to the same dealer up here for the last 3 services.

Things that make this car add up? The wear on the interior, the dealer stickers on the plates match the original supplying dealer and the info gleamed from the last servicing dealer (it helps that we as a family are on first name terms with the principal)

Am I going to change it? Not a hope in hell! I've just put 2 new Dunlops on the front and it still goes like stink!

Can anyone advise on a warning light problem with Streetka 1.6? It's my daughter's car and she tells me the engine warning light came on yesterday and remains on all the time. She also tells me the car seems to be driving fine at the moment.

She did have problems with the light flashing a few months ago, just after the car was serviced. At that time she returned it to the garage and it came back fixed. Sounded to me as if they disturbed a connection or something?

I'll be visiting her in a week or so so can take a look then, but would be helpful to have some ideas, also if it indicates a serious problem developing.

Tks

Went over to see my daughter at the weekend....apparently she took the car back to get the 'engine' light checked out and they say the warning light problem is connected with other problems she has had with the heater(!). Whatever they did, the light is now off again and they're now replacing 'a valve' on the heater for her for free as it's a common problem.

With regard to the heater - for some reason the aircon has never worked in this car (from a year old when she bought it from the local main agent). They told her it wasn't covered by the warranty so she's never bothered to get it fixed as it's a soft-top anyway. The main agent wasn't interested in the problem so she won't use them any more. Next, the heater stuck on full hot (this was apparently fixed by her local garage), lately the heater is only blowing cold so it's about to go back for the valve to be replaced. She's been pretty disappointed with this car and with the main agent as her old Ka got thrashed around for 3 years without a single problem. I doubt she would buy Ford again.
