1st off hi to everyone, i've used this site a couple of times for info but thought now's the time to register and air a problem i've got.

Driving normally the other week the engine light on the dash came and 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT" came on the display (fine weather). I've had no loss of power and everything seems fine when i drive, NO limp home mode, no loss of power etc. I've tried disconnecting the battery for 20-30mins in a vain hope of clearing the fault but nothing. Took the car to a mates garage and plugged the car in 2 weeks ago Sunday (7th September) and had the codes cleared (came back with faults P0380 & P 0221). Everything had been working fine all week until last Sunday 14th (week to the day). Driving back from Swansea and 'ANTIPOLLUTION FAULT' popped back up.

I reckon its either
a. EGR valve
b. Throttle position sensor
c. MAF/MAP sensor

Any advance or advice would be welcome as its driving me round the bend....P.S it's a 206 DIESEL 2.0HDI D-Turbo.

Hi everybody, does switching on car heaters (climate control in hot mode) affect fuel consumption? and if it does, is it only at the beginning when the engine is still cold or throught out driving periods? Read more

Screwloose

Compared to the current cost of fuel

As most diesels now use electric heaters to warm the water to the heater; it makes a big difference.

450 watts of power taken from the alternator uses a lot of fuel.

In practical terms; use of the heater on a petrol car may slow the warm-up and use a little more fuel. Once warm; the engine is dumping heat anyway, so the loss is negligible.

Many thermostats [virtually all cars still have them] are now under, at least partial, ECU control.

Always thought the ventilation on the Focus is poor, so I tend to run with the driver's side window open an inch or two.

What would fitting a clip-on wind deflector do - cut noise and draughts?

If they are any good, any recommendations as to which make and where to buy from?

Thanks. Read more

....Are you aware that you must have the fan running to get any air flowing through the cabin...

Yep, run with the fan on setting one, still reckon the car can be 'stuffy' inside, although I realise that is a subjective impression.

Seems worse when you need a bit of heat.

Appreciate the other replies, especially the one that mentions obscuring part of the n/side door mirror/increasing the blindspot around the pillars.

That may well kill the idea for me as I'm a stickler for visibility.

I think deflectors can look good - saw a Jag X-type with deflectors on all four doors - they were all lined up properly and looked as good as a factory fitting.

Added to the appearance of the car, in my view.

my 110 hdi 2003 307 has engine management light on and keeps on flashing up anti pollution fault. the car is in limp mode. it has done 60 thousand mile and i have filled the seruim tank my self and had a re generation cycle done by a mate at a local garage. he used to work at peogoet and borrowed the soft ware, but it would not perform the cycle on its own so he took it for a spin and ran it down the motorway for several miles at high revs per minute. he said it had done it but 3 weeks later the aunti pollution light is on again and the car is in limp mode again.
can any one shed any light on this matter "screw loose". i dont know what to do for the best. i dont want to go to peogoet as for fear of being robbed and fobbed off. i called in to ask some questions and without even looking at it they told me that it would probably need a new particulate filter. i asked them if the computer would definatly tell them that the particulate was at fault and they said that it would piont them in the right direction. i rest my case.

Hi there

I have had this car for 8 years and have had the same Anti Pollution Faults as anyone else. However I loved this car's handling performance so well I couldn't get rid of it.So I spent quite a lot of time figuring out what could cause this fault ....

My X-Trail SVE is about 6 weeks out of warranty and has done about 48,000 miles. At a recent service (unfortunately after the warranty had expired) I was told the clutch and flywheel needed replacing. Querying this, as I do not ride the clutch, tow heavy vehicles or drive like Michael Shumacher, I was told that it is the design of the clutch that is at fault (some technical jargon about springs that I didn't understand).

Also, the intercooler is about to fail and needs replacing. The dealer is not charging full price for the part and is not charging me labour on it, but the whole shebang is costing about £1700 in total.

How is it that Nissan has not issued a recall on its cars as the intercooler seems to be a general problem; and surely a clutch on a manul transmission car should last longer than 48,000 miles? If the design is the problem, why use this design?

I feel pretty let down by this. Anyone else has the same problem?

I joined the XTrail clutch and flywheel replacement club about the same time as you guys (2009ish). $2500(AU) later........not happy!

I too have just done this job on a 2006 1.6 Ghia. I'd like to add the following comments to the above procedure from Focus05.

- I didn't disconnect the battery but was careful not to drop anything into or touch the fuse board with anything metallic....

Hi,

Could anyone provide me with any information on water in the spark plug hole causing rust and the spark plug to break when attempting to remove the plug.

Are Ford aware of this? as I am currently in dispute as to who should pay for the repair as it broke during a service.

The car has only done 34000 miles and is just under 3 years old and they want to charge me £700 plus the cost of the service

If anyone is aware of any history of the or documented evidence I would be grateful to hear from you as this would assist my argument with e garage

Thanks

Barry

Melgree - I had a similar experience to you. About 1 year ago noticed a slight misfire on acceleration, particularly at low revs and low speed. It only happened once every week or so, and while bugging, I ignored it. Then one very wet day on a drive, it started misfiring more and more, and eventually I limped it into a ford garage with not many cylinders firing. They said they couldn't look at it until the next Monday, which left us in a tricky situation. Luckily there was a nationwide autocentre across the road. £100 and 1hr later, I had a new coil pack and leads, which solved the problem for nearly a year. Now I am getting the same symptoms, so thought I'd google it - am glad I did! Will have to have a proper look at the plugs this weekend, though I'm not sure what I should do. Maybe the rubber mat idea is my best option?!

Hi, I really hope someone can help me out!

My Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8V with engine X16SZR has been driving me absolutely nuts.
I came from holiday to find my MOT was overdue since over a month, the engine management light came on just before the MOT test and failed because of Lambda reading high exhaust emissions due to misfire in the second fast idle test and the fast idle test. I bought a new Lambda sensor and replaced it, the engine started running alot better with no engine lights coming on and exhaust fumes were more neutral. Went for a MOT retest but failed again for the same reason and the light came back on while driving back home!

I did some research and found out about the paper clip test, I tried it and got fault code P0505 Idle air control malfunction. I bought a new Idle Air Control but unfortunately when it arrived it was slightly banged up with a few marks on the casing (very poorly packed) but couldn't get a replacement because it had already been signed for! I tried it anyway hoping it would be okay. Engine was running better so i figured it must be fine but after about 15 mins when the engine got hot it started to idle very roughly. I fitted new spark plugs, HT Leads, Coil Pack, Air Filter, I cleaned out the air intake pipes throttle motor and replaced the EGR Valve but still have the same problem. When the temp gets to around 90 the engine management light comes on with fault code P0505 (engine clearly struggles with idle speed going up and down and exhaust backfiring lightly every once in awhile with abit of blackish smoke). Is the Idle Air Control causing the problem? Why would the fault only occur when the temp reaches around 90? The engine management light goes on and off every once in a while when the engine is hot. The fans don't always come on when temp reaches 92 but it sometimes jumps down to around 85 (without fans coming and me reving the engine slightly). Could the ECU be at fault? I really need to get my car back on the road again, i've been unable to work the last 2 weeks and keep spending more money which i don't have!

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you Read more

I used a mates Vauxcheck which I'm sure it reads manufacture codes because i used before and got fault code P1540 AC refrigerant pressure sensor - circuit malfunction.

If i listen very carefully i think i can hear a slight hiss from some air leaking and it seems to get better very temporarily with WD40. Went to Vx to buy gaskets but was told my engine doesn't have a throttle motor gasket listed on the parts computer thing!?! He gave me one which said might be the one but when i got home and checked it wasn't the same shape. I will go back on Saturday and try and get the correct one along with a inlet manifold gasket and see if that does the trick.

When i turn the ignition the ABS light does not light up, guess the previous owner added a few extra features on the advert! Sigh*!

My alarm keeps going off after leaving the car for about half an hour. I have read that it could be the power sounder battery or the main car battery. Do you think this is likely and what is the best way of finding the fault before visiting Mr Vauxhall
thanks

We have our problems :)

Hi, I have a 2003 Zafira with a faulty alarm. One night it kept going of every twenty minuets. The strange thing was the lights did not flash and it would not switch off even when I started the car or drove it away it seemed to stop on its own. After getting up three times in the night by the sound of my car alarm and each time trying everything I could think of to stop the noise as I have two babies ether side of of my house I finally had to leave he car unlocked.
This stopped the alarm for the rest of the night. I took it to my local garage the next morning who had it all day and said they could find nothing wrong and it had been fine all day. I then took it home and sure enough after about an hour on my drive off went the alarm. In total frustration I searched the Internet to fine a solution where I came across this site. I followed the instructions to remove the sounder from the off side wheel. The car has not made a noise since (24hrs later). I'm not sure I want to buy another one as silence is golden :) I think my neighbours would agree. Thanks to all the great advice it's been a life saver.
