02 1.9 Starting Problems with 110 TDI - bainesyboy
Hi there

I have a 1.9 TDI Leon and it has always had a starting problem since initially purchased.

The pre-heat light (for the glow plugs) on the dash board never stays on, i have so far had it in the garage (NOT Main dealer) 3 times trying to solve the starting problem, so far the following has been checked and ok'd

glow plugs are new and in full working order
wiring has been checked by auto electrician and all ok
new temp switch has been added

(The only way we can get the pre-heat light to stay on for any length of time is to disconnect the temp switch, then the light stays on for the described 2/3 seconds).

So basically the car seems to think the engine is constantly warm and therefore the glow plugs are never told to kick in! Luckily the car does start from cold without the glow plugs however it cant be doing ity much good! The car runs perfectly once started.

Anyone have any ideas or heard of this type of problem before?

Cheers in advance!

Mate....

Scewloose is ya man for this one.....could be a number things.... I had a similar issue on an older 1.9tdi where the timing was slight out on the fuel pump (it is adjustable and the car can run from extreme to extreme).. and I do know it is also adjustable on a 2001 car.........

When you say temp sensor.. which one? was it the correct one?

Sorry I can not be any real help.. I would have to do some digging first.. try a search for tdi starting issues or similar..

but like I said.. Mr Screwloose is the chappie....

Trial and error don't seem to have yielded rewards - so try some testing. Confirm that this is an AHF engine code.

The glow period is wholly under ECU control. With the temp sensor disconnected; the glow plugs should stay on for 20 seconds. Check, with a voltage tester, at the plugs themselves - the light goes off a long time before the plugs do.

Then get the ECU plugged-in and the temperature sensor's reading checked in live data. If that's correct; get the engine to 80 o C and check the dynamic timing of the pump with the scanner.

My 1.9 TDI is also having this problem.

I had the temp sensor replaced, the glow pugs replaced and the fuel filter and seals replaced... and still no joy.

Did you get the problem sorted? My car has also on some occasions just either die on me or lost all power for about 30 seconds.

Was it the pump timing? it would be great to hear some conclusions for this problem :)

Thanks

Hi Martinclou9,

It seems I have the same symptoms:
stops at random and glow plugs stay on a very little amount of time. I have already spent too much money on the Audi dealer and this problem hasn't been fixed. I hope anyone has resolved this issue and could share his experience.

Thanks

Hi I have a 09 Ibiza 1.9TDI that refuses to start in the cold, cranking and cranking for ages but wont fire, most of the time it coughs as if trying to fire, other times it just cranks this can go on for 5 mins or so! When it does fire it does so with out clouds of fuel smoke and runs fine! all the rest of the time it jumps to life 1st time and is great!!!

Its going back to the dealership again on thursday (4th time?)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!!

Cheers
