Our 2000 passatt estate constantly loses pressure from its off side rear, my wife appears unable to check the tyre pressure-ever!, what would cause this? fairly new tyre-less than 5k on it.

I test drove the SR180 today and found that my left foot was just a bit short of space (could have been my bulky shoes). Also, the central console seemed to rectrict space to some extent. Otherwise an excellent car - very good to drive and goes like a train. I would be grateful to hear from anybody who has one.

Thanks for your comments Lud. There appear to be mixed opinions about this. I have looked at the Toyota Drivers website and several people, like your BiL, seem to be quite happy.

Hiya

Sorry if this is a repeat of earlier messages.

OK, so we bought this Rover 214 a couple of weeks ago, I drove it home and although it drove ok in higher gears at 50/60mph, in the lower gears it seemed pretty juddery.

We took it for a once over at our local garage and he said it needed a part new exhaust so replaced the front pipe. We told him about the judders but he didn't have time to look at it at that time, and suggested perhaps it was the head gasket as these notoriously go on rovers? However, originally he said it wasn't showing signs of the HG going so I am hoping he's wrong about this!

Since then, my husband has been driving it daily to work and said the juddering isn't as bad, but still occurs when accelerating slowly and slowing down - he says it also feels like the car is holding back and then will surge forward...

Can't afford expensive repairs since we only bought this car to replace another one costing us a fortune!

Any ideas anyone?

Please can you keep responses simple - relative novice on car related issues!

Thanks
Kat

I would change your mechanic for pulling the headgasket card out! From what you describe its mis-firing which isnt a sympton of the headgasket going.

It sounds like some new leads, plugs, rotar arm and distributor cap might be a good idea. Do you know when they were last replaced? If the HT leads are not good quality ones they do seem to wear quite quickly on the k series. All of these items are available very cheaply - £50 tops for the lot from Halfords/motorfactors and even someone who has not lifted a bonnet shouldnt have a problem changing them with the help of a haynes manual/online sites.

Early last year I had a blow-out on the motorway, and as Honda don't see fit to supply a spare I was picked up by the AA. At 10 at night, and with pressing work reasons to get mobile again, I accepted a new pair of cheapo tyres. One of them got damaged and written off by a knife in the road, and replaced with a Dunlop as once again that was all I could get in time.

My question is this. The cheapo tyre thrums and makes the most appalling racket. It's not good when I'm in the car on my own, and just gets worse as the suspension angle changes if the car is heavily loaded. I would dearly love to change it, but to change both rear tyres just because it's noisy would be prohibitively expensive.

Can I get away with just changing the one tyre? There's still about 5 mm of tread on the Dunlop, but obviously there would be a rolling difference. Read more

Well, I've put my money where your mouth's (sp?) were. I've had a 4-wheel tracking done at the same time as having a new pair of front tyres fitted. I'll let you know what difference it makes as I'm about to head to London.

I currently cover J11 to J15 of the M25 on my daily commute, usually between 7am and 8am. I have the possibility of a new job in Hatfield which would mean a considerably longer commute from J11 each day. Could anyone offer any comments as to the average speeds/ regular queues on the M25 between J15 and J21a (and then on the A405 and A414 or is it?s better to go to J23 on the M25 and then use the A1M)?

Many thanks, NDR

Don't forget to consider the journey back from jct 21A to j15, this can also be a real mare at normal rush hour time. As above, I would try it out, but not for the next couple of weeks as school hols can make a big difference.

(well almost)

I'm planning to stick the order in on monday after I've had the weekend to think about it and consulting with you all.

Thanks to honestjohn.co.uk, who provides a list of the 'best market deals'. Wouldn't have known about it otherwise.

Drivethedeal is able to get one for me 2.0 TDI SE with about 4 grands worth of extras for a shade under £19k, an amazing £4k off.

Ok, enough plugging - is the car any good? does anybody have any good/bad comments? it fulfils my critera, growing brood, economy, just falls down on the looks department.

Has there been any known problems with the engine? I've already had a look at the car-by-car breakdown, and I also noticed that there's a replacement due next year (but which should have come out this year)? mightily confused.

I'm speccing the MFSW, but have no idea what the 'Highline' computer is able to do (I do love my stats). Ideally does anyone know where I could download the car manual?

Credit crunch issues aside, will these deals get any better? I can't see it myself even though VW must still be making a pretty profit even at these prices, if US prices are anything to go by.

Annoyingly the local VW dealer doesn't have any of these in stock to look at, apart from a fleeting look at one that was being prepped for delivery.

On a separate note I also test-drove the RAV4 XT-R diesel which comes in at the same price via DTD. When I showed the local dealer salesman the on-line price he almost choked!

I've already mentioned on another (old) thread that I'm selling my 2001 520 LPG, for info.

I've also had a look at the clubtouran forum but I guess they all love theirs

thanks everyone

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad that the highline gives me a few more gadgety options to play with. I have ordered the nardos, tints, fogs, rear sensors, mfsw, leather and a few other bits and pieces, in black pearl.

A quick peek at the forum shows you on the front page, so I've no doubt I'll be making an appearance there in a few weeks time!

I read the thread about joggers with intrest.

Drivers are absolutly right to be incensed when someone steps out infrount of them without looking and thus coursing danger. Whatever the legal words say motorists should be accepted as having the right of way on roads. Exept where there are Pedestrain crossings.

In the Joggers thread there were stories about people running across predestrain crossings without looking. - How dare they, they are causing a real danger, creating car crashes!

I am right in assuming pedestrain crossings give the right of way to pedestrains? It is like a give way sign to motorists. No motorist would get away with assuming a give way sign did not apply to them on the road, so why is it diffrent for pedestrain crossings? To pass a give way sign on the road motorists need to prove to themselfs nothing is comming that has right of way. The oposite seems to be true for pedestrain crossings - when you see someone at a pedestrain crossing you stop - if you don't, proceed. The burden has thus shifted
In regards of people running out onto predestrain crossings we have to ask ourselfs who is creating the bigger danger - the 2 tonne peice of metal going at 30MPH+ tailgating other 2 tonne peices of metal going at 30MPH+, or the 70KG body going at less than 15mph.

May I suggest that the next time you drive up to a pedestrain crossing, you treat it as a road for pedestrains, in that you slow down to look if there is someone who could have right of way - and that does include runners - may want to use the road. We all do that when getting to a normal give way sign on the road, why not at pedestrain crossings?

Definitely the hedgehog! Or, if you have ever driven in Texas, the obvious choice would be the armadillo. They evolved to be run over by cowboys in pickups.

I used to do a fairly regular drive down the A36 from Hampshire to Bath. It was like death alley for pheasants.

Hiya

I have noticed a rattle that eminating from the parcel shelf that is noticed on rough roads. I took it into Volvo today and they told me that the rattle was coming from the centre seatbelt mount in the parcel shelf??. The cost of replacing the centre seat belt unit would be approx £ 300 which seems rather excessive. I have requested the dealership to take this up with Volvo on my behalf as a seat belt item is fundamental to the safety of the vehicle and does not constitute a wear and tear item. The Dealership said they would try but were not optimistic? If this repair cost is rejected and if i were to take it up with Volvo what points to i need to make to make the case stronger?

your advice would be much appreciated. By the way the seat belt does work

According to stats here
www.smmt.co.uk/articles/article.cfm?articleid=17852

Kia and Hyundai's market share (based on no of cars sold in July 2008) % are 1.47 and 1.30 respectively.

Compared to, Ford 15%, Vauxhall 14%, VW 8%, BMW/Peugeot/Toyota/Renault/Audi all hovering around 5%

Citoren [3.74%] sold more than Mercedes [3.38%]

I don't know how fleet sales can skew the numbers though.

My wife gets a better deal than that on her Punto. The going rate is a coffee and rich tea biscuit every hour, starting with a `primer`. (or at least a driveway visit with the offer)

Yes, it's me again with my 07/56 320d... Tech question(s) related to the 'swingometer' instant fuel consumption gauge:

I'm driving along at a steady speed - say an indicated 70 mph. I ease my foot off the accelerator pedal, and the swingometer shows (logically) an increase in mpg. But there's no fall-off in speed. This implies that by working at it (and by some experimentation) the car can be driven more economically than one might think.

But same, constant speed for less fuel? How? Why? Isn't that defying the laws of physics? Is the swingometer having me on? Read more

I think fuel consumtion is so simple even I can figure it out. The accelerator is a fuel tap, the more you press the more you use.
