Having got rid of the Smart forfour I have bought an ex lease Honda Accord tourer executive diesel and my first impressions are that it is a very nice car with all the toys except for one thing it does not have a fuel usage computer something I find strange on a car of this quality. Its very comfortable and quiet a very relaxed drive I have always had a bit of a down on Japanese cars but this is certainly nicer than my ex BMW 525 tourer but time will tell I suppose. If it is like mine the warning light is very reliable - 10l left when
it comes on.

Ditto on mine, 10 L every time. Although I try and avoid letting it get that low!

How reliable are the Battery Hydrometer testers in testing car battery cells ??

I've just tested my recharged overnight battery & the results don't always seem consistent.

The tester has 3 ranges: Good/Fair/Recharge

At first tester showed 2 Good cells, 3 Fair, 1 Recharge
Later on it showed 1 Fair, 5 Recharge

I tried number of times, made sure the rubber was sealed around glass.

The test results don't seem consistent.

How reliable are these testers, what have people found ??

(My battery went flat, not sure why as I did long trip (150 miles) few days before so should be well charged, hardly used car since & am sure didn't leave lights or anything major on, alternator is working as checked voltage).

Typo corrected. I assumed you meant 1995, as per previous questions on your Cavalier? - which you seem to have omitted from the drop down menu again; now added once more Read more

If you do end up having to buy a new battery then try your local Vauxhall dealer as you may be surprised to find that they are cheaper than Halfords etc & will have the exact spec of battery, of course.

Hello

Wondering whether following features can be incorporated into this site:

1. Some more sections. Only Discussion and Tech Matters are just too broad to discuss everything. Most other motoring forums have at least other sections like Buy/Selling, Off topic discussion etc. (though I'm not saying that we need too many sections like there in Pistonheads). I have seen some categories while creating a new thread, but probably would be better if we have separate sections.

2. Is there any way to add pictures in-line in the forum? Currently I think we can just put the URL link but the picture is not displayed within thread - need to view it as a separate webpage.

3. Formatting options - can we write in bold, italics & underline?

4. Displaying member's post count in the thread (I know we can see it by clicking the member's name)

Other back roomers can suggest some more features. Read more

It's certainly far from unusual on a hot engine. I wouldn't worry about it.

I was at my local Saturn dealer recently, looking at the Astra which has just made its US debut. What do you lot think, are these cars any good? I know you've had them overseas for quite a while.

Drove a PT Cruiser in the US last month - to put some perspective on it you'll find the Astra far more space efficient (in fact more everything efficient !) Two suitcases - not big uns - struggled into the Chrysler - leg room in the back of the Astra will be a bit iffy. Opel/Vauxhall engines are pretty smooth, my mother has a 1.6 Astra H - its a peachy little motor. In my opinion a far nicer car than the equivalent Focus.

Hi all,

A few months ago my 98 Almera GTi key fob started playing up. I bought 2 new ones no more than a year or two prior and am sure they're not the problem, either one produced the same results, one of which is the spare I never used and thus, I assume, the battery in it should be fine?

Anyway, every so often the car wouldn't unlock until I'd pressed the button X times, anywhere from twice to 20 times. This then wouldn't happen again for weeks. Then it started getting more and more frequent until one day it wouldn't work at all. I had to open the car using the key, which set off the alarm, hazards flash etc. I could still drive the car but the hazards flashed constantly and the alarm would sound while I drove it.

A rocovery guy unplugged the alarm under the bonnet (a siren I think, not the horn), and I had to remove my hazard and indicator fuses under the dash to drive it without them going off constantly. I have tried reprogramming the keyfobs but I can't tell if anything is happening because the indicators tell you if things are proceeding correctly during the programming procedure. Even so, they don't appear to work even after I follow the instructions I have found.

My keyfobs have a black button, purpose for which I am unsure of bar reprogramming, and a red button that both locks and unlocks the car.

Any ideas what the problem is or if I can get the car through an MOT by somehow disabling the alarm system so I can get my indicators/hazards working again?

Many thanks in anticipation! Read more

I recently got a Peugeot 406(GLX).it has done 40,000 miles, and last service was at 33,000 miles.when should I change the cam belt ? are there signs you should watch out for if the cam belt needs to be checked ? Is there any visual check to know maybe it should be replaced or not?

Just taken our petrol 04 Mondeo out of the garage where it has been sitting for about three months, started absolutely fine and runs great, (50,900 miles only) however after it got warm i noticed every time we came up to a junction or traffic lights to stop, the revs fluctuated up and down between 500 and 1,000 five or six times then settle back to normal? Any ideas please? Read more

Yes it was! took the rubber hose off squirted some carb cleaner down there and
the difference was immediate ticks over fine now. many thanks screwloose for replying.

Is this generally a good first thing to try if car is idling erratically, that is squirting some carb cleaner or maybe WD40 into the inlet ??

I have some occasional minor idling problems.
