I think it must have taken the designers of the new Golf about 3 minutes to come up with the new Mark 6. Other than a slight grille change is there actually any difference to the current one?
Click on the link below and then on the word "weiter" in red under the picture of the car under the title "Das ist der neue Golf" and you can see a series of photos.
It will doubtless sell by the bucket load!!!

The recent thread about rusty KAs has got me worried. We have a 2007 Focus which is proving extremely pleasing to own. But will it rust like a KA?
Also what about the S-Max?
Thanks

20 notes.....a year....for what?? Body present and correct?!
I can only repeat what I said last Friday. "My 2003 Focus has had a Body and Paint check (and the book stamped accordingly) every year as part of the yearly service, with no charge being shown on the invoice."
It's always been carried out as a matter of course, without me having to request it.

Autovaux? Although as topbloke hints they're probably not much more from a main dealer anyway.
Has anyone experience of changing the outer CV boots on these cars. Is it necessary to remove the drive shaft assembly as the Haynes manual implies or can the job be done in situ and what is the easiest way? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, can anyone recommend a decent book on the anatomy of a car - something that provides practical text and illustrations for learning about the working parts of a car and how those components work as a whole, etc, as well as practical sections on fault finding and, maintenance and repair. I'm basically looking for a book that manages to bridge the gap between texts for the totally uninitiated and service manuals full of complex specifications.
Anything that covers the engine, transmission, electrical & ignition systems, brakes, steering & suspension, body & chassis, etc but also goes into detail about the working parts. For example, topics for the engine may include individual detail on the crankshaft, flywheel, piston, valve timing, tappets, camshaft, carburettor, etc, etc.
Thanks in advance for your time.

"Thoroughly recommend Hillier's Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle Technology, Book 1."
yes, I'd go with that too - also recommended by NC.
The "Fundamentals of Automotive Electronics" by the same author is good too.
Sorry I am totally clueless with regards to cars. At the moment I have an 11 year old fiesta which I have had for 6 years, and I need to change it for something abit newer as it has started to cost me a fair bit at MOT time. So I was wondering if somebody could give me some ideas, as I have a few things I do want in a car, have an amount, but not sure what I need to avoid that will cost me long term (ie parts etc). So I have approx 3.5K to spend, need something with 4 doors, not high insurance, not a massive engine that will cost a small fortune to run, something that isn't expensive parts wise, I do about 10 miles a day, just running to work and back, don't tend to long journeys. Any advice would be helpful as I have been trawlling autotrader and just don't know what is good to buy and what is best avoided.
thanks

Save your money, and spend under 1k (when you can buy an 8 year old car for this budget, why spend more?). You could do a lot worse than one of these which seem to be hugely unfashionable (but widely recommended) and so pretty cheap. Glass's guide gives the part ex value of this in the 600-750 range, so the seller of this particularl example isn't making much profit (note, I'm not actively recommending this particular example):

Hi there
A colleague at work has sprog number 5 on the way (I know, I know.....!) and as a result is looking for 7 seat family transport, the only real stipulations being proper seatbelts all round (not lap belts) and at least some luggage carrying capacity with all on board.
Price is not really going to be an issue for him, so I was just wondering if the back roomers had any idea what was out there (new) without going down the minibus route?
Many thanks in advance

My thoughts when I see threads like this are:
1) How often will they need to take all five children at once;
2) Do both parents drive;
3) How much of an issue would it be to drive two cars in convoy on the occasions when all 5 need to go at once?
Large MPVs are a menace on the road. They bump into parked cars, and 5 screaming kids in the back of a vehicle that large have an impact on the quality of the driving when on the road.
Additionally, two vehicles gives more freedom.
Even with a family as large as this, is a large MPV *really* necessary?
if you know this are you might be able to help.
I am currently driving a hire van, and was driving past this store today(entrance on LHS) via r'bout up towards Colliers wood.
At the end of this road, T.L goes to Colliers wood.
There are 2 other lanes, one allows cars to go straight on, into retails outlet unit, or turn right, the rhl allows for cars to only turn right.
Yes you've got it, I went into the middle lane and signalled right, as I was going around, the person in the rhl, decided to go straight ahead, I only noticed how close they were when I looked in the wing mirror, but I didn't think they'd hit me -on inspection they have damaged the very end of the van.
I went into the estate, via the back entrance and looked for said vehicle, without any luck.
Now what is the chances ,if I go to the police, of them looking on cctv, for the reg no, and me being to claim off them, as I said its a hire vehicle, and excess will be quite steep
have i any chance -cheers Read more
PU,
I like the thinking.
Did a service on the eco-crate today, Mobil 1, + filters and so on...
Also...
Went underneath-like a clanking old King Crab, long bones and not enough flesh, dragging on the flag stones and head with reading glasses, elastic banded on (otherwise can`t focus under 8 feet) and *Scrutinised the previously greased areas* last done 2 years ago.
Sump,
Still greased (high melting point) wiped old off. Sump like new underneath. re-applied a slather of HMP grease and rubbed in..
(Is there any better feeling in DIY than slapping a handful of grease on?)
Brake pipes,
Wiped off bentone based Castrol CL waterproof grease. Pipes like new. Re-applied.
Both of the above not needing doing again really, but re-done just because I was under there.
Observed,
Subframes and under-body seams. All still well greased, (bentone-CL) no action required.
Now, here`s the thing.. areas in *contact with heavy wheel spray* such as rear swinging arms. Still well coated in waterproof grease, no further coating required.
Previous experience,
Some proprietary stuff slithers off a hot sump like butter and just seems to disappear off heavy wheel spray areas` while the harder black stuff doesn`t contain oil to creep into the subframe and underbody seams like grease does..
High temperature and Waterproof grease then. In the correct place, the preserver of the nether regions.
I ache all over now, it may take a day or two to recover.
;)

That chassis sounds great! Is the whole plot built onto a ladder chassis running full
length?
Fraid so, huge great lump of a thing, complete with cart springs at the back, (but has limited slip diff, and needs it) but disappointingly gone all high tech at the front with independent suspension (and select 4WD on the move up to 50mph), and drive shafts with CV joints....confound it all, no swivels to pack to the gunnel's with moly grease, no manual free wheeling hubs to have to lock before you can put drive to the front...nampy pamby thing..;)
You'd like the greasable propshafts....
It seems there are still a few of us who like keeping our old and not so old vehicles in some sort of condition.
What makes the ones of us who do try to protect and nurture our cars tick?
I don't think its a simple answer, do the other eccentrics have a affinity and affection for their vehicles, is it pride, do they feel sympathy for them, do the same ones cringe when they hear that hooligan down the road revving the heart out of their vehicle from stone cold?
Steveo,
I think the steam cleaning of the vehicle before rustproofing is a discretionary thing; judging by how the vast majority of owners can't even clean the crud out of the wheelarches from one year to the next, its probably needed in most cases.
One of the 2 places i had short listed was quite happy to treat a well cared for and clean vehicle without steam cleaning, and i hadn't contacted the other to ask yet.
I have noticed several Multi-Volume threads, Computing and 'I have a question' being the most obvious, but I've also seen GPS, and some associated with particular makes of cars.
The snag is, these only come up once in a while, so it's only the hardened Back Roomers that know the full range.
The (Very Useful) drop down lists at the top of the page include one marked Category, and it strikes me that the MV threads could be listed in there. As I don't know how many MV threads there are I don't know whether it's a case of a separate line for each one, or a Generic title followed by a sub list. Generic suggestions I've just thought of include Multi-Volume, Long Running, Perennial Topics, Popular, but do you have any other possibilities?
It won't take an Einstein to realise I have a query that is only loosely Motoring related, and am wondering if there is a 'hidden' thread to research, but I'm not going to put the actual query here. Rather I've used it as a prompt to suggest an extra light fitting in the Back Room.
Good Idea? Bad Idea? Is there a better way of achieving the same end (of more visibility of the MV threads)?
I've just put this post under Category Miscellaneous, but are all the MV threads categorised like this?
Regards. Read more
We'll put your idea to the site developer.
To re-cap what you're after is an additional category (ies) in the drop down menu to include "I Have a Question" etc.
Locking is thread for now. We'll let you know how we get on.

Actually, that was from the Autocar article about the new Golf. Admittedly, probably only regurgitated VW press release.
