Am thinking of buying a road legal quad bike to continue to enjoy open air riding/driving,they have a reverse gear so it will solve problem of weight wheeling it in and out of garage,I have tried the MP3 scooter but this of course has no reverse and is nearly double the weight of normal scooter,Has anyone any experience of these ?,for instance as I am not thinking of offroading should I change the tyres from those fitted to a more tarmac based tread. Your comments welcome.

hi am getting a howling noise from the oil cooler, its ok when cold but when it gets to normal running temp and at 17000 /20000 rpm i get this noise, i took off the aux belt and run the engine but it was still there ,had all new belts/tensioner fitted + oil & oil filter . it done 84,000 mls. there is no loss of power or smoke , some one said it could be the turbo :( any help pls Read more
Any chance it could just be a boost leak somewhere? The revs you indicate would be where the turbo comes onto boost. Possibly something is expanding when warm, opening up a gap and causing a leak somewhere. A smoke tester would be handy for checking for leaks. If it was more of a high-pitched whining noise then I guess it could be the turbo bearings on their way out.
This is a 5 speed auto model which belongs to my sister and B/in law. There is a noise from the base of the steering column which sounds from the description like the universal joint at the bottom. We have been advised by the Vauxhall agent that they are on the 5th revision of this part but the noise (a sort of grinding) persists.
We have also been advised that the steering column will NEVER become detached from the steering gear, so the car is not unsafe.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

Thanks for that topbloke. Its just out of warranty, but its had a couple of attempts by the dealer to pu it right so I am fairly confident I can get them to pay. I sue a lot of people and I usually win! ;-). Could you please give me some more detail about what needs to be done?
Thanks

One of my employees parked in B&Q car park at 8o'clock the other evening, three hours free parking, left just after midnight according to the letter I had this morning. Lovely colour picture of his car taken entering the car park, timed, and a black and white photo of him leaving. £95 fine or £75 if paid promptly, wonderful technology. Read more
A friend of mine has been undertaking some DIY in his house. This required him to visit the massive new B&Q super-duper-warehouse 3 times in one day. He received a penalty notoice through the post. He simply sent back copies of the 3 receipts (which all displayed the time he was there) and asked them for advice on how, since he can only drive an automatic, he can hire a van (none of theirs has auto and very few hire companies have any) to do the uplift in a single shot, or how he could get prompt delivery when their customer service desk told him they were full up for the next 10 days!
He got a cancellation letter back, a letter of apology, and a voucher for £25. (Though he says he'll walk to the store to use the voucher in case they send him another penalty notice....!)
I've just received another VED renewal today and the bit at the top where it said "Do not apply for your tax disc before the 15th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start" Has been crossed out with XXX's
Further down it says "Do not apply for your tax disc before the 5th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start"
So it looks like it won't be so much of a problem for those going on a (normal) holiday at renewal time.

Yes but who would want to rely on our now very unreliable Royal Mail delivery
service to deliver said tax disc to your door. I know I wouldn't which is
a terrible indictment of today's postal services.
We did for the first time this year as we we going on holiday and wouldn't be able to get to the local DVLA office. As both our cars tax expired at the same time we didn't have any alternative really.
They respond with an email so I would imagine that if the disc didn't arrive at least there would be some proof that it had been applied for.
I must admit that we do most things online these days. We booked our flight to the US, car hire, all the places we stayed, Broadway show and shuttle to the airport for the flight home all online.

I have a 2002 MK5 Polo 1.4 tdi pd that has done only a genuine 12,000 miles and it has spent the vast majority of its life in a garage a lot of periods for two weeks at a time with out being moved. If the period looks like being over two weeks I deliberately take the car out for a spin to avoid getting flat spots on the tyres. I have had the wheels off and checked the tyres and there are no cracks or bulges in fact there does not appear to be anything wrong with them. As you can see from the mileage and the car being garaged the car tyres have not seen a lot of the sun. Looking at the tyres they still look reasonably new and dont seem much worst than the day I bought the car new.
So after 6 years from new would you consider these tyres safe to drive on

>>Still using some crossply tyres from the late 70s on my trailer. Not a visible defects to be seen. They spend most of their time in a darkish garage, so don't get much UV.<<
That's the main point. Rubber deteriorates mainly by air oxidation, which is accelerated by light (mainly UV) and heat (direct sun or prolonged driving). As I mentioned in another thread, I recently fitted the original unused spare P600 on my 205 GTi - it showed no detectable cracking, and I advised my regular MoT tester that I was doing it 'as an experiment' and he did not say that I shouldn't, as he had already passed the car! The tyre has (presumably) spent all its life out of direct sunlight.
The company will carry on and the true designers will be staff. But we all know their style.

I am seriously considering exchanging my 7 year old E320CDI for a more recent model; the question is should I wait a few more months? When will prices be at the bottom? Read more

That's a thought! I hadn't allowed for a new model coming out.
I've agreed to take a friend from Leicester to Heathrow airport (Terminal 5) tomorrow morning.
Normally he'd make the journey by overnight coach but this time the trip is one way so he'll be taking as many possessions as possible and paying the consequent fees to BA. It's too late to dissuade him of the wisdom of entrusting so many of his belongings to that particular airline.
Is this a journey that anyone here regularly makes? I've been urged by one or two people to avoid the M1 and take the M40, which we'd have to join somewhere south of Coventry (M69 followed by A46). The reasoning is that, although further, this avoids the most congested part of the M1 and a section of the M25. Is this sound advice?
Given that the flight is at 10 in the morning and we'll need to arrive at least a couple of hours before this, my feeling is that whatever the answer, we'll need to set out ridiculously early.
Thanks in anticipation. Read more

What, if any, are the legalities should one fit an extra lap seat belt in the rear of a vehicle? Read more
You don't say if you are planning to use the lap belt or not.
The car has been given type approval based on what the manufacturer submitted.
This is the number of seats entered on the V5C.
You could put ten lap belts in the car but it would not make it a ten seater.
Still looking for fossil fuel kicks as an Octagenarian...Hope I'm as lucky !
I can't help but wonder if something like an MX5 might not be a better option.
You still have the open air option, no need for the brain bucket and as you can't really filter on a Quad bike I can't see how you would really be missing out.
A couple of blokes at work use these things and they are a royal PITA in the bike parking area. They take up too much room for a bike and not enough for a car parking space. They seem to park them in a manner similar to school run Mum's, in everyones way.
