2005 1.6 Steering Column Noise - AdamK
This is a 5 speed auto model which belongs to my sister and B/in law. There is a noise from the base of the steering column which sounds from the description like the universal joint at the bottom. We have been advised by the Vauxhall agent that they are on the 5th revision of this part but the noise (a sort of grinding) persists.

We have also been advised that the steering column will NEVER become detached from the steering gear, so the car is not unsafe.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

there is a field remedy for a steering rack noise, to do with the bushing in the rack, it would need the rack removing and rebushed, is it still in warranty and has the vehicle been to the dealers for this problem

Thanks for that topbloke. Its just out of warranty, but its had a couple of attempts by the dealer to pu it right so I am fairly confident I can get them to pay. I sue a lot of people and I usually win! ;-). Could you please give me some more detail about what needs to be done?
