I've just received another VED renewal today and the bit at the top where it said "Do not apply for your tax disc before the 15th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start" Has been crossed out with XXX's
Further down it says "Do not apply for your tax disc before the 5th day of the month before the tax disc is due to start"
So it looks like it won't be so much of a problem for those going on a (normal) holiday at renewal time.

Haven't heard of them changing the gola posts yet - but who knows as I have heard complainst of non receipt by start of month.
AFAIAMA:
Can apply if you have had a reminder and new disc is a continuation (no break) 15th day of month before new one required.
If reminder and vehicle has been unlicensed/SOPN (continuity broken)then can only apply 2 days before new one valid.
If abroad when it expires then 2 months in advance at airhtoised PO/DVLA office or DVLA - letter of explanation required along with necessary docsvalid for date of new issue.

Mine arrived today with exactly the same deletions/additions!

I renewed the SORN on a motor on Tuesday, 5th, so yes it has changed.

DVD - it is just the date that has changed form the 15th to the 5th - and yes, it worked I renewed today.

about time
its always been to hard to stick to the rules if you are caught by unexpected business issues at one end of the country when your paperwork is on a doorstep miles away
its still ridiculous for anyone working abroad for months at a time or similar, or even in hospital
there should be simple ways of setting up payment and proof of insurance etc without needing to take half a day off to queue at a post office

Thanks for that Martin - duly noted.
Pity they don not keep their site up to date - 15th still mentioned.

There is, you can do it online on the DVLA site. The DVLA are linked up to the insurance and MOT databases so they get the proof that way.

Plus it spreads the workload at the DVLA from 15 days to 25 days

It only spreads early applications. There'll still be the late applications to deal with.

Yes, but who would want to rely on our, now, very unreliable Royal Mail delivery service to deliver said tax disc to your door. I know I wouldn't, which is a terrible indictment of today's postal services.

I can't say I've ever had a problem of something getting lost in the post. However, I tax my car at the post office to help it from being axed and because it gives me the opportunity to flirt with one of the cashiers!

We did for the first time this year as we we going on holiday and wouldn't be able to get to the local DVLA office. As both our cars tax expired at the same time we didn't have any alternative really.
They respond with an email so I would imagine that if the disc didn't arrive at least there would be some proof that it had been applied for.
I must admit that we do most things online these days. We booked our flight to the US, car hire, all the places we stayed, Broadway show and shuttle to the airport for the flight home all online.
